Does Mark E. Smith just really need a wife? Can't live fully without a strong woman behind him?..........God, what a brave woman (?!).........or can he only exist surrounded by sycophants? He is a very unlikeable man but the band was GREAT!
When the Fall was formed did Mark take complete control and power over the name of the band and copyrights of it? How is it he seems to replace all the band members for new ones?
@jackhartcup It's Theme from Sparta FC, the BBC used it on their Final Score football programme as the theme music I think, check out the video of Mark reading the football results, hilarious.
I saw the fall in '87 - I was right up near the stage - a guy behind me shouted "Play some fucking proper music you arsehole" Mark E looked straight at me thinking I'd said it - Fuck me that's a scarry stare. If only Elena had been there to comfort me afterwards.......
Despite The Fall being my favorite band - I'd go insane if I listened to them too often - it's a treat to rediscover their music every now and then and remember why I fookin' love them so much. Thanks for uploading this video. HE IS NOT APPRECIATED :/
Some of the worlds greatest artwork resides in our National galleries to be viewed for free. Some of the greatest archive footage of our best bands lies gathering dust courtesy of some disinterested philistine bastards. Many, like myself, would pay top whack for the likes of very early Fall & Joy Division. Release the tapes you miserable, killjoy shits!
who gives a shit how good they are, how well known they are not! this is a brilliant strings of bands with one name! THE mighty FALL, god bless all who sail in thyem,
here today and there tomorow! the fall,
some of the best truly modern garage punk thats dosnt copy the past has always effortlessly spewed out of them, despite the slack lazy early 90's to late 90's phase, but then, BAMM up they shot again!!
loved some of that (deliberatly? or by chance?) trippy shit they did early 80's, coool
Well, I don't think The Fall and Mark E Smith are just for pretentious music journalists. I remember when I first bought "I am Curious Oranj" and just was blown away....and I thought here is this incredible singer who makes no attempt to really sing. The brilliant paradoxes are what make this band so unique (one name, how many members?, a revered yet hostile lead singer, his ability to always have new "recruits" and his incredible luck with the ladies!); hype only works if people agree.
isnt it interesting that there are no musicians(apart from exmembers)talking on this doc...but lots of music journalists?seems like a great band for a journo-something that needs to be explained...or hyped.sorry fall fans-this stuff does nothing for me,seems like pretentious tripe to be frank....
Browsing a record store in Detroit. Found a used copy of Witch Trials on vinyl. A friend had raved about The Fall, but I never heard them. Cover art/titles got my curiosity. Staff would normally play it, but they REFUSED more than a few seconds. I couldn't decide if I liked it or if it was just shit, but I felt COMPELLED to buy it, as if priceless artwork at garage sale. I returned the next day for Grotesque. It was gone.
Fucking amazing train wreck. Drove my mainstream sis nuts with it.
just finished watching the whole thing. Thanks very much for uploading. This was very well done. Not some pop star white wash (couldn't be, could it?) What a great band(s)/phenomenon.
Yeah gotta love Tony Wilson, he died way too young. (I wish he could have at least made another Factory...though supposedly he did...two more, and they were both pretty obscure)
I had a funny dream that mark e smith was manager of chelsea FC and sold all the brats and replaced them with with fat dim schoolkids from penge and gave the best press conference ever... ha!
Class act. The new band with the members of Darker My Love is fantastic. SAw em at the Hammersmith Palais last week and it was just amazing. Wrong Place Right Time was a real surprise, pity they didnt do a long gigs worth of back catalogue stuff seeing as it was the last ever gig at the palais. But then again, Marks always got something new to say, so why bother dwelling on whats been said??
Bravo. I saw that lineup with Ben in Los Angeles a while back (front and center, thanks) and they were so solid as a band I was stunned. I totally expected a shambles but big new Prinz and Telephone Thing were simply massive.
I've always connected Mark to Miles Davis in their creativity and how they run a band- Miles was famous for his temper and rotating supporting cast, but it was always a sign of wanting to move forward and try new things that kept the creative spirit hot they both know what they want at any given moment and how to get the right people to achieve that vision. I still have to buy the new album.
That's not entirely correct. He does say "He is not appreciated" on Hip Priest, but he ALSO says it on Big New Prinz - which is a sequel of sorts to Hip Priest. So there...
Many thanks - for what it's worth I think he has now become what Paul Morley said in part 5 (I think), which is that character screaming into yout ear in the boozer about everything and nothing in particular
maybe there's a reason he's not appreciated....he's got a horrible voice.
