It's not a "hidden screen". When you do that, you put the iPod into Disk Mode. And yes, it is used to help fix a "broken" iPod.

yes, this works with all ipods apart from the touch, basically when you press menu and center followed by center and left key it brings you to the diagnostics screen, which the guys at the apple shops use to find out whats up with your ipod when secretly you dropped it down the loo ;)

when u go into your diagnostics test screen your background is white, mine is green. i have an ipod 3g video and i also do not have the same options as you. i can do it on my 1st gen. ipod nano though.

I just found out, but it's different for the Chromatic

you hold "menu" & center, but you push left & center right when it turns black (if it shows the apple sign, your too late, it will turn on, then you try again), once it goes to diagnostics, go to "LCD" then click "ColorPattern" once your done, go back to the menu and click "Sleep" then click "DeepSleep" once it turns off, just click any button to turn it back on (I Don't Know if this is the same with any other iPod) Try at your own risk.

Then music menu

Click everything so that there is no ticks

Go back to the settings menu

go down to language

and change there language to Japanese or chinese

hah, lol, i LOVE iPod diagnostics... the nano's are the best ones to do the color thing with because you can get that color test thing, you know, the one that channels show when they're non broadcasting, and you go show your friends and go "look, it's my favorite channel!" ^^ or if you really wanna mess with your friends, put their iPods in disk mode... (for those of you wondering, disk mode is menu+center and once it reset and shows the apple logo, press and hold center+play)

it should work with any iPod. this is just the iPod diagnostic mode. it is really fun to play with though. and with the newer generation iPods, you can't use the scroll wheel when you're in diagnostic mode, you have to use the RW/FW buttons.
