i used to have a hydraulic bmw and now drive an electric volkswagen i dunno - each one has its cons and pros. the old school bmw was more involving but a bitch to park. the new vw is a little detached but smooth as butter. as i live in the city and and have to do a lot of turning at low speeds and parallel parking i actually prefer the new electric system.
Hydraulic and electric pump hydraulic is superior in real feel and should be less likely to completely fail. The EPS steering to me seems hyper and not right as in even slightly off of center it tends to over compensate and needs more constant correcting. I hope to avoid having to buy such autos with EPS. You can still find hydraulic and electrc hydraulic new cars.
The placement of the electric motor is a good idea, compared to hydraulic electric systems... However, most 2000 and later cars have very reliable, variable mechanical systems... The only real advantage of this is improved efficiency at the expense of reliability.

@Lorenzo2go
thats true man, I tried a 2009 750LI of one of my relatives, it sucked to drive it in a highway, as it makes the car unstable in the lane.
it was responsive, but wasnt comfortable, as it need so much focus on the steering.

I have driven a BMW equipped with Electronic Power Steering. The steering response is one of the best out there.

Honda was the first using Electric Power Steering and its system is much more reliable than the BMW's version which is, in fact, terribly unreliable.
