Imagine if he'd been PM, he wouldn't have had the guts to do anything.
& what a lazy, lucky treasurer he was. He did nothing but shower select groups of voters with welfare and cash handouts while people who really needed services and infrastructure upgrades, not to mention the national reputation & consciousness were all left to ROT.
Buhbye Petey. Now fuck off to your taxpayer funded lavish retirement with all that super.
actually costello was going to ratify kyoto and apologise to the aborigines.
lazy lucky treasurer? he inherited an economy that was the joke of asia - we were called the white trash of asia by the prime minister of singapore. we were billions in debt, employment was far higher than it ever was during the crisis and we had a prime minister (keating) who was probably one of the most hated in australian history.
He had 2 good budgets where some hard work was done, in cutbacks needed and some restructure.
After that, it was all vote pandering middle class welfare hand outs and no real policy spine. There was no floating of the dollar, no brand new ideas like superannuation. Just a GST and a "oh, if we give too much of the tax gouging back it'll be inflationary, better stick it in a fund ".
As a politician, completely spineless & found wanting when the true nature of leadership was revealed.
no floating of the dollar or super? lol both those things had already been done so its kind of pointless to except him to do something retrospectively.
middle class welfare? you mean giving a tax break to all the people whose wages primary make up the budget? it is not unreasonable to give people money back to spend when times are good. it gets spent far better and more effectively by people than the government ever could.
@RickWarrenisjesus As I recall it during the election campaign Hawk said they would not float the dollar, no nuclear warships would enter Australia and no uranium yellow cake would be sent overseas.
So when Labour won that election they lied about what they would and would not do.
smart mouth smart arse is the only description I can give Mr Costello.
But I dont think I am entitled to that opinion.
I have a great interest in politics so I could ramble on forever about the best of the bunch but democracy is the only way to live in a free speech country.
By the way my saving,s and home were destroyed under Mr. Howard due to extreme inflation and high cost of living but no raise in my 83 hour,s a week job salary.
I still chuckle whenever Swanny pulls that little shake of the head and somewhat smug grin! Enough of the mini clips, however, and post something with a little more length!
I heard the Labor Tree is dying...I feel sorry for the tree - it is a victim of attachment.

Forward by John Howard???
I think you mean Foreword.
Obviously another victim of Labor's 'education revolution'

Costello is a funny fellow with friends on both sides of politics. I 'm leftist, don't like the Libs that's 4 sure, but he's got great SOH.
Who could forget 'OPOSSUM, YOU'RE HOME!' and the Peter Garret dance.
He left his mark with his wit and a shame he's chosen to go.

that shot of Howard's head in his lap says it all really !!!! What a pair of morons......
