  • WHERE IS SECTOR ZERO!! SOMEONE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!

  • Just had one of these die on me in a client computer. Are these drives highly prone to failure?

  • Make it into some kind of new wave instrument... The iClacker.

  • Click of death. Heard it, been there, It sucks.

  • caviar blue?

  • Click of death

  • Looks to me like the drop misaligned the heads.

  • I dropped mybook on the floor and it stopped working. When I plug it in the light goes on for a few seconds and the unit starts up but then shuts down after only a few seconds. Is there any hope I can get this unit to work again? How can I recover all the stuff I stored on this unit. Thank you.

  • @redflamered I know your comment was a long time ago but there are companies that specialized in recovering data from damaged hard drives. These services are rather pricey though. What ever happened to your drive?

  • is it better to have two hdd 1for windows and 1for games or just one for all?

  • The best in all is instal Windows on small Hdd such 45B or 80 Gb only for windows drivers and programs them put one 2 or 3 Hard Drive and put all destination file in those HDD example downloads works on videos save music videos etc

  • wow. it's so noisy. guess that case does a lot more than keep UV rays off the platters.

  • click of death

  • My God! It dropped from a desk!? Poor HDD. Had such a large capacity...

  • Thats What My Portable HDD Is Doing

Because I Droped It Alot At Skool :(

  • @thevideomastr

yes mine did too because I dropped my own. 2 weeks later the hard drive succumbed to its injuries and shut off while I was working on it.never turned on again.should have it back with a new hard drive next week.

  • I bought a new one that is way better than that on now :)

  • did it click like this? mine didnt, it FLAT OUT quit working. causes, causes???

  • Hello!

So i need to ask some questions to find out whats wrong

    "Okay"

1st does the L.E.D (light) Light up when you plug it in?

2nd Does the harddisk drive run at all?

3rd Have you tried it in any other computers? (WHY? Some computers may not have the power to run the HDD)

4th What condition is the cord in?

With these questions i can pin point what's wrong

    Thanks fir Commenting

  • no it doesnt

    no I dont think so

it was the only one I had

brand new condition, I only had it for 6 months

  • Okay maybe try a different computer because some computers may not have enough power to run the HDD and since the L.E.D dosen't light up there may be a power issue

  • I did but unfortunately the computer will not even start without the hard drive and the hard drive will not start

  • oh okay i thought it was an external hdd oops... this may help if not send me a message and ill keep at it!

  • One question. Why does nearly all dead drives do that same clicking sound and moving the head in that way?

What are they wanting to achieve with that

  • It is a symptom of a defective head. It is hopelessly trying to find the zero sector of the Hard drive but since the reading head is defective it cant. The sound you hear is contact with the limiter it is designed to stop the head from traveling of the platter and damaging the HDD.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • the reason they do that is because the read head has become dammaged and cannot tell its (the arm) position over the platter and hits itself over the spindle, causing the clicking, in attempt to reposition itself.

  • videos out of sync make it sooo funny

  • Mine wd 1600 died 3 days ago ;( but in's not clicking so much times mine wd doesn't power on

  • i have one of those... but its still living, i think its from 2005-2006 or 2007 (i dont think so)

its got OLD stuff on it, but i have like 5 million floppys with stuf from pre-2005, even some 5 inch ones but i dont have a drive for them, but i have a 3.5 floppy drive

  • well, it is possible, but if it is clicking, you may have killed the heads that look for the data. if there are no scratches on the platter, try swapping boards, arms, or read write heads. if all else fails, try disk savers :P

  • bonj, our, plaquette electronique qui est morte

  • just got the same with y 'mybook 500Gb' full of data... feel like crying...

Opened the box and try to recover with freezer now, if not working, will have to send it for data recovery expert, except that it cost shit load money!!! Amen...

  • What did you end-up doing?

  • Makes ya wanna cry. My 120 did that too. 3 years of data on that drive. Now it sits on my desk without the cover on it kinda like a desk toy.

  • WAHHHHHHHHHH!! I pity you man. Western Digitals are the shiznit, and they are even better in high capacities

  • Fan-freakin-tastic. My mother-in-law today asks me if I can show her "how to back up pictures". Turns out her HDD containing pictures has been clicking for about two months now. It has two years worth of photos on it and is now unreadable.

  • If you use DVD Recorder DDisk in computer, it will do the same thing!

  • mmmmm the infamous click of death. ya know its not so bad when you lose a small drive, say 4gb, th the click of death, but when its a 160 gb hard drive such as yours.... it hurts

  • my 500gb died after 4 months. no clicking, just makes really loud grinding noises. Data Lost: 137GB

  • Correction: its not so bad wehn you lose a 4gb drive, but when a 500 hits the fan, start crying LOL XD

  • yup yup

  • i have a western digital that makes that same noise...but its gotten a lot worse

  • lol wow, that is the same sound mine is making. i need help repairing my external hard drive. 1 day i woke up & could no longer see on "My computer". "Device Manager" says it's present & working properly. i checked it on CMD and it's there (the files and everything is too) but the icon just wont show. i know this is 2 long but i really need help fixing it, i have a new 1 but the info on this 1 r very precious 2 me

so thanks 2 u all in advance

  • I had a 2 Caviars, a 250GB SE and a 160GB SE16. Both failed just a few weeks after warranty. The 250 GB was in a MyBook, to which the serial number was showing as a 300GB internal drive (it's a 250GB external, wtf). They both made this noise. Then, when I got a different drive to put in the mybook, a SST chip on the mybook board started overheating whenever it was powered up (I mean OVERHEATING, leaving a red mark.) I believe it was a failing power controler.

  • thats the same sound that my 20gb western digital sounds.

  • fuckin thing, same happened to me yesterday i NEED everything on mine but cant seem to recover it yet hopefully i can get it sorted out tho but its not a easy thing to do

  • tHE POWER CONNECTOR IS BAD 12+ 5+ GND x2 REPAIR THE POWER SLOT AND THE IDE CONNECTOR, IS A POWER SUPLY POWER! ;)

  • my WD hard drive has the same problem :/ I just wish I could get it working for a few days to recover my data. I had this problem once before but it fixed itself.

  • I just opened a bad WD2000 drive with this clicking...had DEEP scratches in the head park area, and little black chunks coming off the heads! maybe a head underneath did this?

  • is that WD1600 160gb? that was happen to me wat a fuck up!

  • i have one to

its a heat problem on mine, the controller is getting to hot

  • My WD 300gb drive did that without being dropped. restarted my computer one day, and bam, the hard drive makes gay sounds and its broke.

  • OMG NO!! W.D is supposed to be the best isn't it?

  • I have a Seagate that skips like a scratched CD! But it still works and I recovered my shit!

  • i dropped my wdc hard drive off the table 3 times still going today, just my mistake.

  • man...you are a jack ass

    leting a HDD faling :\

  • i had 3 Maxtor fail in 3 days never again buy that junk!! i have bought SEAGATE and WESTERN DIGITAL and never had a problem, run them 24/7 work perfect!

  • ok here it goes... I get a message before logging onto my pc and it says "Fixed" but when i sign on i am automaticly immediatly signed off. I tried putting my hard drive on another computer and it gave me the same problem.. But I dont here any clicking noises people claim to be hard drive failure.. so you think its repairable or know what i should do?>

  • lol, I have a dead maxtor right here on my desk. It's from my 2001 computer.

  • try freezing it in a bag for a couple of days

  • seagate is the best..

  • Maxtor too!

  • No way , on my recent 5 DELL servers each with 3 Maxtors , 8 failed within 6 months ...

Back at home , i had 2 Maxtors , both died after exactly 1 year , the same sound . !

  • maxtot sucks i have 3 dead

  • I had 2 maxtors with no spin-up problem with the motor chirping...

  • As for what happened, if the sliders moved out of the landing zone onto the signal area of the platters, then technically the drive experienced a head crash.

When those platters are at speed, the sliders float on a very thin cushion of air, so they literally do not make contact with the platters when working. But, when those sliders do make contact, they can damage that part of the platter: head crash.

  • Next time, get a Hitachi or a Seagate.

For the Hitachi, at least they use load/unload ramps and not those silly landing zones on the platter itself.

  • 90% of all my broken drives are Maxtor :-D and i have a LOT of damaged drives from computers that have been given to me over the years

  • I don't doubt it.

I've had problems with Maxtor drives myself. I would never rely on a Maxtor.

  • Hitachi's Arn't that great you know ...yea they are better than Maxtor but NOT better than Western Digital or Seagate.

  • To some degree. I am aware of the reputation that has earned them the name "DeathStar," but, at least for me, that's been mainly when DeskStar was associated with IBM.

As for WD, I've had rotten luck with their Caviar drives, mainly with servo failures. (Raptors, on the other hand, are decent.)

I've got a couple of bricked WD Cavs because of their operational unreliability related to this. Meanwhile, I've never had a failure with Hitachi, thus far, or with Seagate.

  • next ti,me get a maxtor

  • A MAXTOR ?? ARE YOU INSANE !

  • @assified fuck maxtor.. WDC FTW

  • *sigh* What a waste, you otta be careful with an awesome 160GB hard drive next time.
