She is older, her voice is also different, but that doesn't mean she is not Good anymore! I don't know any singer that has better voice on hers 46 years old than on her 20's (Whitney is no exception).

I'm from Quebec and I only know maybe 2 or 3 singers who sing better in their 40s, BUT they only have a career in Quebec and they didn't start at a very young age (it means, a way less demanding career). Still, I don't know any singer who has ever had a better voice than Whitney. I was only saying that it's possible, but rare.
I would give ANYTHING to be transported back in time to this night in 1987 I LOVED the 80s nothing has even come close to the music and feeling of that time!

Whitney is definately still with us and is a good PERFORMER (note I didn't say vocally), but it definately isn't the same. I saw Cyndi Lauper perform on the Macy's Parade and it doesn't sound too different from '80s Cyndi Lauper; if only the past could be changed. Just accept her as is; nothing except for the Kingdom of God lasts the same eternally.
To be fair Cyndi's singing was rooted in classical technique. Whereas Whitney's was rooted more in gospel belting, with a few classical nuances thrown in. It's no big surprise that Lauper's voice would retain it's former sound. Whitney would have ended up losing her voice at some point anyway. It probably wouldn't have been for quite a few years, but she would have ended up sounding the way she does now anyways. The drugs just sped up the process. Belting is hell on the vocal chords.
it's a real shame what has happened to whitney's voice. I would loved watching her voice command the stage and attention from any other artist. Like I remember when she only had to sing and other artists (like pink/jlo/christina) would already know who she was. This was an amazing performance. It's a shame her recent performance of this song is incomparable. I wish her the best though.
this is a great vocal performance but, the song itself is just another crappy 80s disco anthem. sadly, this is tue of most houston recordings.just because she could sing the phone book, she didn't have to keep doing it! the only great, timeless song she did was "i have nothing". the way she sounds now, she's not likely to add to this. thus, her legacy is IHN and a bunch of polished turds. what a bloody waste of a superb voice.

What do you think Whitney should have done differently donkiddick08? You have to remember that she is not blessed with songwriting talent. So she was always going to sing songs given to her by people interested in making the most money out of her. Stevie Wonder got complete creative control of his music because the record company knew that he had great songwriting talent to go along with his great voice. Yes Whitney's voice was wasted on mainstream rubbish but what else do you expect.
This is what I keep saying to people, "If you want to hear Whit's old voice, then watch YouTube and buy her old records." Coz really there are a lot of gems in YT such as this one. Whit's voice here was as close to perfection as it can get.

Effortless and amazing. Whitney was in full command of her powers back then and it was breathtaking. So, she's lost some of her control and range. She's still a bad ass dame. No one comes close to Whitney in her prime. Her comeback is heart and guts and determination. Hope it continues to go well. She still has a great presence about her.

Both Whitney and Mariah created unique singing styles, Whitney can't copy Mariah's singing the same way Mariah could never sing like Whitney, (If not, people would only buy albuns of one of them)
Both Whitney and Mariah aren't in their prime now, but both are stil Great!
Inspite of prefering Whitney, I have Mariah's earlier albuns and I really Like both voices!
Whitney is also several years older than Mariah, years of vocal abuse have done harm to both of them. Within the next 10 years Mariah will be in the same boat as Whitney. Mariah's belting is not sub par, and her use of the whistle register is nothing more than a party trick. Any woman can be trained to use the whistle register, the fact that she can still shriek really high doesn't mean anything.

She is older, her voice is also different, but that doesn't mean she is not Good anymore! I don't know any singer that has better voice on hers 46 years old than on her 20's (Whitney is no exception).

@Ashalaylay16 That she's awsome and that it's possible to have a better voice in your 40's, but it's very rare. I'm from Quebec and I only know maybe 2 or 3 singers who sing better in their 40s, BUT they only have a career in Quebec and they didn't start at a very young age (it means, a way less demanding career). Still, I don't know any singer who has ever had a better voice than Whitney. I was only saying that it's possible, but rare.

It's supposed to be better. She should be at her prime. When Barbra Streisand was her age, she made YENTL. Whitney damaged her once-in-a-generation talent. This video is bitter sweet.

@oriac1212 I totally agree with you. I sing, and both men's and women's voices are normally in their prime from 35-50 and many keep a great voice beyond that - Shirley Bassey and Grace Jones to name two. This video is SO bitter sweet. She had such remarkable voice.

Whitney is definately still with us and is a good PERFORMER (note I didn't say vocally), but it definately isn't the same. I saw Cyndi Lauper perform on the Macy's Parade and it doesn't sound too different from '80s Cyndi Lauper; if only the past could be changed. Just accept her as is; nothing except for the Kingdom of God lasts the same eternally.

To be fair Cyndi's singing was rooted in classical technique. Whereas Whitney's was rooted more in gospel belting, with a few classical nuances thrown in. It's no big surprise that Lauper's voice would retain it's former sound. Whitney would have ended up losing her voice at some point anyway. It probably wouldn't have been for quite a few years, but she would have ended up sounding the way she does now anyways. The drugs just sped up the process. Belting is hell on the vocal chords.

it's a real shame what has happened to whitney's voice. I would loved watching her voice command the stage and attention from any other artist. Like I remember when she only had to sing and other artists (like pink/jlo/christina) would already know who she was. This was an amazing performance. It's a shame her recent performance of this song is incomparable. I wish her the best though.

this is a great vocal performance but, the song itself is just another crappy 80s disco anthem. sadly, this is tue of most houston recordings.just because she could sing the phone book, she didn't have to keep doing it! the only great, timeless song she did was "i have nothing". the way she sounds now, she's not likely to add to this. thus, her legacy is IHN and a bunch of polished turds. what a bloody waste of a superb voice.

Well ate least W. Houston did, in my opinion some other good music (not only IHN), specially some Soul classics, mosly live, and unfortunaly she never recorded those songs (specially from her 1984-1990 Tours)
Well I understand your point, since pop is not the genre I usually listen, but it wasn't a total waste in her case, believe me!

to soundslikeblue. thanks for your reply. i'm not unhappy about WH being a "pop" singer, just the poor quality of her back catalogue. i think it's tragic that inferior singers such as elton, bowie will leave a better legacy. all singers end up singing dross eventually but, usually after recording lots of good stuff (eg sinatra) and, when people look back at sinatra, they'll disregard the dross. in WHs case, if you ignore the dross, there is very little left. this is what saddens me.

What do you think Whitney should have done differently donkiddick08? You have to remember that she is not blessed with songwriting talent. So she was always going to sing songs given to her by people interested in making the most money out of her. Stevie Wonder got complete creative control of his music because the record company knew that he had great songwriting talent to go along with his great voice. Yes Whitney's voice was wasted on mainstream rubbish but what else do you expect.

Nothing lasts forever. How sad that people always live in the past. Whitney looked healthy and RADIANT on DWTS last nite. She is 1 woman who is confident in her place in popular music and has nothing to prove to anyone. NO, she cant sing like this anymore but her past performances and successes are forever. People are so used to watching Britney, Mariah, and J. Lo lipsynch theat they are bewildered when soemone sings LIVE anymore....

I think DWTS was a very good surprise! The key was lower (she isn't 20 again!) but she never lost control of the song! And still sounded great!
Don't put Whitney down, her comeback is being very successfull! I Look to you is a number one album! Thats a fact!

Effortless and amazing. Whitney was in full command of her powers back then and it was breathtaking. So, she's lost some of her control and range. She's still a bad ass dame. No one comes close to Whitney in her prime. Her comeback is heart and guts and determination. Hope it continues to go well. She still has a great presence about her.

Both Whitney and Mariah created unique singing styles, Whitney can't copy Mariah's singing the same way Mariah could never sing like Whitney, (If not, people would only buy albuns of one of them)
Both Whitney and Mariah aren't in their prime now, but both are stil Great!
Inspite of prefering Whitney, I have Mariah's earlier albuns and I really Like both voices!

Whitney is also several years older than Mariah, years of vocal abuse have done harm to both of them. Within the next 10 years Mariah will be in the same boat as Whitney. Mariah's belting is not sub par, and her use of the whistle register is nothing more than a party trick. Any woman can be trained to use the whistle register, the fact that she can still shriek really high doesn't mean anything.
