jim loach is releasing the film Oranges and sunshine, even though rudd and Brown have apologised and only in the last week David Cameron mentioned the anniversary of the apology, i dont think it goes far enough, The British are always the first to jump on the bandwagon and scream crimes against humanity... maybe a quick look at the past will make them rethink their words...
this is not new, Britain has been "exporting" children since 1600, when the first 100 children went to the USA
I heard about Northcote Farm, where is it? I live in Northcote, check out a The Stillsons Charity and Ghosts, Melbourne band wrote a song about this subject!
Luckily we were not subject to the abise suffered by institutions. However, the treatment meted out to us was pretty tough - tough no love. The clip in Nigel's video of kids on their hands and knees polishing is true. It was a daily requirement to polish our floors, wash dishes, prepare lunches. That was okay, it was par for the course in the belief of making a man out of a boy long before puberty. Childhood lost..
The apology was just a word - far too late. The damage was done.
I was born in the late forties and it saddens me to compare my happy childhood with those child migrants who are similar ages to me. How could our government allow this to happen? The lies, the abuse, the lost childhoods, how could our government let this happen.
