This movie was fantastic, but it would have been a masterpiece and a treasured classic had Stanley Kubrick lived long enough to make it. Speilburg came in and sprinkled it with a little child magic that didn't do so well; but still very good.

The point was meant to be that he didn't really go to sleep, it was a metaphor for him 'dying' or deactivating himself.

He said at the beginning, "I can't sleep, but I can lay quietly." Which, if you take to be true, means that by 'going to the land where dreams are made' means he effectively killed himself.

Totally under-rated movie. One of Mr. Spielberg's finest, next to Schindler's List and the Indiana Jones trilogy (the 4th movie wasn't that good, in my opinion). I nearly cried during two scenes. Should have been nominated for/won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Score, Best Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Song, etc. Haley Joel Osment was excellent in this film, as were Jude Law and Frances O'Connor.

@cuteybooti2 You know it's interesting. David is not a human being and has absolutely no ability to feel emotions like love. He has a purpose that he was programmed to do, to obtain love from his mother.

He has to do this because he is programmed and when he finally does, he shuts down.

I think it's fascinating that the film creates this huge illusion that he's a real boy who has dreams and feels love. In reality he just can't, it states that humanity is irreplaceable. Very dark and Kubrick
