Erm.. To point out slightly that Alexander the great was Macedonian, not Greek. So he can't really be included in this. The rest is right though. I think ancient Greek history is one of the most interesting periods of history. It's just a shame that Greece had it's power knocked out when Rome conquered it. I think the world today and even the Romans learned/stole a hell of alot of the culture/methods of the greeks.

Erm.. To point out slightly that Alexander the great was Macedonian, not Greek. So he can't really be included in this. The rest is right though. I think ancient Greek history is one of the most interesting periods of history. It's just a shame that Greece had it's power knocked out when Rome conquered it. I think the world today and even the Romans learned/stole a hell of alot of the culture/methods of the greeks.

Graeculus is a latin word and it's the diminutive of the word Graecus that means Greek. So, Graeculus means simply "small Greek", neither slave nor anything similar. The Romans of the first BC centuries used to call Graeculi the Greeks of their time to distinguish them from the Greeks of the classical age; they wanted to show that in their opinion they were unworthy children of great ancestors.

I repeat that the name was used by the ancient Romans for the Greeks of their age as opposed to the classical Greeks.
Also, the name Γραικός indeed comes from the word "elder", but it doesn't mean that they believed they were the oldest people in Europe
