You might want to raise that rear gear off the ground to prevent it slamming into the ground when you're traversing off an obstacle. If you look at real tanks, there are two main cogs on each side of the tank: one at the front, and one at the back. Either one of these can be the drive gear, depending on where the engine is. These cogs rarely touch the ground, because the (usually smaller) suspension wheels between those two cogs on each side are the ones that dampen the ride.
What exactly is the advantage of the subtractor mechanism? Seems like a lot of gear losses and complexity just to change the controls a little. Wouldn't it be a lot more efficient to just control each track independently?
This is the kinda win i would love to make if i had the godamn PARTS! I mean like what the hell lego? The price of the indivitual tread pieces is about 90cents PER PIECE! The cost of the plastic is about 1-1.5 cents so thats an 850% markup on injection molded plastic that probably reads 'made in china' on each and every piece.
That is the coolest track system I've ever seen. Nice job with the suspension. I see you used dual differential drive, but it would be better just to use one motor on each track. Dual differential drive gets the most power when it's turning and driving at the same time, but tanks (including yours) typically only turn or drive separately. As it is you use 1 motor at a time, but with a simpler drive you'd be able to use both more often.
Now you have the lego prototype build it in real ; )
maybe not 1:1 scale but try it with some metal or steel its much cooler then lego and also at a turret but not for marbles cause thats boring but make one for darts : )
@Bakudude6 Hey, i just wana say that when rc trucks, cars, tanks and so on is slow they get better grip on the ground and they can climb up higher hills. It has with the gear to do with, just ask rillester i think he is agree with me. Just a tip.
that was my first concern as soon as i saw the two motors- what about the minimal but significant speed difference between the two, resulting in gradual left or right movement. now i can see there's two diffs involved but i dont see how it all fits together. is there a tutorial on how to build this setup?
rillester, notice you have 2 differentials in the drive train. are you using two independant motors to drive each track or is there more to it. how do the differentials fit into it?
can you do a "how to" for the subtractor drive... my simple twin motor burns up batteries... Slick tank.. I only wish I had that many large gears for guide wheels!
Where can you buy one of those? :D
