I think people who have "covered" this song have done a fine job, but Ms. Manchester wrote it and I find her interpretation to be not only the most beautiful but the definitive one. JMO
1 of my very fondest all-time favorites...so many artists have interpreted it so well, but as always (well, 99.9% of the time) the original version takes the cake...much better than her own remake in '82...
I would add a message for all multi-media companies that try to squeeze every last penny out of the creative work of others to which they own copyright, and assume that everyone who watches their product on YouTube has the financial capacity to purchase their product on DVD: Le 19:10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.
I am pleased to see the copyright disclaimer allowed under Section 107 of the copyright act of 1976. One of the reasons I established a "Classic Popular Music" playlist on my YouTube site was in remembrance of how a young co-worker back i the late 1980s who had somehow heard of Bette Middler, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Melissa Manchester but couldn't find thier recordings easily. He asked me if I could dupe him a cassette tape sampling. I did.
Gorgeous record with a deep message. I have lived this song.

Her voice is a thing of extreme beauty. No matter what song she is one of the finest singers I've ever heard. A message to her: Love ya baby"

I love Melissa and a lot of her music, but Toni Tennille sings this one better and with more conviction.
Melissa does a fine job, but she just doesn't quite seem to feel and relate to it like Toni does.
