I've only ever seen one once. As kids, we were digging in moist ground by a creek to find a frog & encountered the funnel web instead. These spiders are very aggressive & do not flee when threatened. In fact they come at you.

I study them @ uni, they arn't so bad, bites only ever envenomates 1/10 of the time.

Apply first aid (wrap entire leg, if bitten on leg, up to the groin tightly)

and get to hospital asap... which gives you an anti-venom.. and your fine :)

Actually, brown recluse bites are only rarely life-threatening. The necrotizing properties of their bite is gravely exaggerated, and in reality doesn't really happen so often. That's not to say it can't, however.
