  • It seems to me that these teachers are taking a didactic and authoritarian position where the students are not the centre of learning, instead the teachers are the expert and the only way to achieve knowledge is through a transmission based approach. In my opinion the students are not creating their own understanding but instead being spoon fed the information. The students don't seem to be interacting in anyway with each other, this is not effective teaching.

  • a big problem in the world is that we only teach our children survival skills which is ok to have to teach that a little but we never teach life. As a teacher you need to walk around the classroom joyful you need to stop being the boss so much and be a friend how did we not figure this out yet this is sad maybe i will become a teacher and help this problem a little

  • @TheAki13 These schools are 90-100% free and reduced lunch and in most cases are 89-100% proficient students by the time they are out. You are seeing a snippet, if you read the book it goes into much deeper explanations of the school and it's practices.

  • I taught in a very difficult school for over 30 years . These non verbal clues are highly effiective. I discovered this technique for myself . It took me 20 years to figure out this, and many other really useful approaches for myself. Could have save alot of trouble and been so much more effective for a greater length of time if somebody had told me about them. Well done this video.

  • I've read the book and I've also seen this done in person at the high school level by an expert in the method. The expert had been doing it for a couple of years but she didn't realize that it was creepy and demeaning. It is absolutely despised by the students.

  • What is so important that these students must cope with these prison wardens just to regurgitate something for an exam to later forget it?  For instance, if you are teaching mathematics, the lessons should be interesting in and of themselves? Since what you are teaching them is useful, right? Right?

  • does she have emotional disturbed kids with no medication or students that are using drugs or students sent by the court. or half of students with IQ of 79?

  • I love how the teachers addressed individual students but still kept the whole class on task. One of the most challenging things for teachers it to choose what battles to fight to keep everyone on task. And often they have to let things go because they feel it isn't worth distracting the whole class to regain the attention of one student. But with the methods that these teachers are using they are able to continue the lesson and keep everyone on task.

  • I would hate to have a teacher like that! There is no relationship between the student and teacher.

  • @fishehfishehofdeath surely this clip is showing the 'whole class' view: when the teacher is engaging all of the students at once. The 'relationship/rapport building' would come when the students are on task and the teacher is able to navigate the room and spend time with each student. The techniques displayed in this clip are important - especially when teaching classes that have a tendency to have medium-to-high level disruption characteristics.

  • @MyHistoryClass You can often infer a student is not paying attention by watching the student's body language. Lack of eye contact, doodling, the way the body is facing, are all indicators. It is not a guarantee that your inference is always correct, but you can't very well ignore these signs.

  • @MyHistoryClass Chances are, before hand she called on her, and the girl didnt answer. The teacher probably called on someone else, and then went back to that girl privately to discuss with her she needed to focus more. I like her concept.

  • I think snapping at a person is rude and wouldn't use that technique but I think the other examples of praise and re-direction are good. I think I'll check this book out.

  • I teach in a school where 12 of my 20 students are have problems with attention and rage. This book may not be the answer to all my problems but it has really helped. Less desks are flipped less books are thrown and more students are learning.

  • I work in inner city Baltimore. All but 5 of my students are African American, 2 are caucasian, and 3 are hispanic. It is a title one school, and more than 90% of the students are on free or reduced lunches.

    These methods worked for my students. You just have to be disciplined about using the methods and expect the students to comply. You can not allow students to opt-out.

  • First of all you are only seeing a few of the teachers. There are African American teachers at these schools and they are shown in other video segments of the book and in some of the other videos on You Tube. Secondly, as a teacher in a school, I have tried several of these techniques since the beginning of this school year in my classes and have already seen a huge difference in behavior and participation. Don't slam something like this until you have read the book.

  • So to be a champion teacher you have to be white and teach in an urban school like Newark? I don't see Latinos or African Americans in this? And I do not agree 100 percent that you will not have issues...There is always issues that kids bring to school from home all the time!

  • i see a lot of afro-american kids in that classroom and i dont know if its an afroamerican school or its racism
