  • Tony Hawk!! Without the s!

  • Gorman is a cunt.

  • Apparently the character was originally called 'Dan Gordon'. Hmm...

  • Thanks to everyone who pointed out that this may be based on Tony Hawks as well. I've edited the details to take this into account... :)

  • what Dave Gorman does is just a more elaborate version of what the people on jack ass do which intern in just a more elaborate version of that time I tried to eat grass in primary school to get my class mates attention

  • Also based on Tony Hawks with his trip around Ireland with a fridge and his playing tennis against the Moldovan football team. The technical term for people who do contrived "drunken bets" is "wanker".

  • Isn't this about Tony Hawkes?

  • Steve Merchant bank - nice!

  • The more I watch these two the more and more I enjoy Webb's sort of weird way of delivering lines "I call him Ricky, I know him". I find myself going back to old sketches and laughing at lines I would normally have passed over, this sketch is full of gold.

  • Michell and Webb are funny but they can't touch Gorman! He's amazing. I'm sure this is just meant in good fun though.

  • @StickItUpYrBumGugle your a comedy moron if you think that

  • @255ad Your fucking blind if you disagree. They're great on Peep show and and individually they're hilarious, but together in sketch shows they're incredibly hit and miss. Gorman's brilliant at what he does and nobody else really does it. Mitchell and Webb try to do sketches. Sketches have been done since comedy began. Sometimes they're good and sometimes they're awful. I suppose it's an unfair comparison but in terms of success in what they aim to do, Gorman wins.

  • @StickItUpYrBumGugle I've been wanting to ask these of you for ages since our little back and forth, 1)do you think Mitchell & Webb's sketch comedy is more or less funny then armstrong and miller's sketch comedy? 2) are you basing your judgement of them on the early That Mitchell and Webb Look, because I think the latter 2 series of the 4 are better (and the very first one was shit)?

  • And you fucking lose.

  • @StickItUpYrBumGugle I'm sorry I insulted you, comedy is subjective and I can't say that what Mitchell and web do is more or less funny then what Gorman does.... however I do think I can say with some degree of objectivity that what Gorman (and even more Danny Wallace) does is far simpler and easier to do and come up with then actually writing a sketch like these two do…. So I agree it is a very unfair comparison

P.S if you don’t they are funny together you should try their radio show

  • This is a classic example of a M&W sketch that's funnier on a repeat viewing, when the female presenter says she's nervous about meeting the next guest because he's bonkers, knowing that David's character thinks she's talking about the sectioned guy makes me crack up xD

  • Gorman = tosspot!

  • @cole003f David Mitchell is a co-host of 10 o Clock live, regular on comedy panel shows such as Would I Lie To You and 8 out of 10 cats along with appearing on Mock the Week. Robert Webb is also a panel show regular, the pair of them creating an award winning sketch show "That Mitchell and Webb look" as well as an award winning TV series "Peep Show". All of which were populated by other comedians and comedic journalists. How have they failed at comedy?

  • @scaryninja1693: They acted in Peep Show. They didn't write for it.

  • @Tehjonny32 They write additional material for Peep Show

  • @cole003f =Failed at making a comment that makes sense on Youtube...oh dear.

  • @cole003f You have no comedic taste.

  • @KungfuCow5 their UNTALENTED their not funny NEVER have NEVER will

  • @cole003f I think you'll find that that particular comment required 'they're' and not 'their' in order for in to be grammatically correct. Mitchell and Webb are hilariously funny. A sort of modern day Fry & Laurie (of course the latter pair do come top though).

  • @retread01 look forward to seeing you in stand up. No wait...

  • @retread01 you really are a dunce

  • @retread01 Mitchell & Webb's style is suppose to be angry, sarcastic and awkward (like when you hear nerdy people complaining about pop culture) I think that's what you (and I do mean just you) hear as "sounding stilted"

  • Miaow! Saucer of milk for Mitchell and Webb!

  • Are they not also taking the mick out of Tony Hawks, who seems to make a living out of various ridiculous bets. It must be easier than thinking up actual comedy.

  • wallace is great, gorman not so much

  • Most Belgians speak Dutch (Flemish) not French

  • @Experiment47 Most people take this a a comedy sketch and don't pull it apart as if it's an inaccurate serious piece of international fucking journalism.

  • I enjoyed watching googlewhack but seriously that tatoo. It was obvious he had that done soberly in order to fill his book

  • Who else wants to join me in my crusade to run from Cardiff to Exeter covered in peanut butter?

  • @MrPaperHands

Ooh, I'm in Cardiff - sounds like a great idea :) I'll bring some jam, to help make the sandwiches when we scrape the peanut butter off at the other end.

Health and safety will be a nightmare though - just think of the allergy situation, it's no good if 20% of the participants and passers-by swell up and explode halfway to Exeter...

  • Is that Barunka O'Shaughnessy? I love her, I had no idea she was ever in Mitchell and Webb

  • Imma ladiee!

  • i fucking hate dave gorman

  • I think Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace are great.

But I feel the same way about Mitchell and Webb. There's no contradiction really, they're all funny

  • @ozoneocean To be fair, he only did the Googlewhack stuff to pay back the publishers after wasting all their money on the actual Googlewhack bet itself. :P

  • According to the word 'Politie' he should be speaking Dutch, not French.

    He got even that wrong.

  • i wanna make a cathedral out of ham now!!

  • I really don't like Dave Gorman. I don't mind Danny Wallace so much.

  • Lulz...who's Dave Gorman :3...?

  • @S0rasN0b0dy Which one?

  • they aren't 'having a go' at Dave Gorman it's just a joke; a parody of all those sorts of programmes. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all. Don't over analyse.

  • @Francis2061 i think the implication that their work is contrived and cynical is probably having a go a little bit and rightly so

  • "And then we had to find somewhere to put all the money!"

  • Tony Hawks was the original guy that did all the silly drunken bets but unlike the others, his books are worth a read if you get the chance.

  • i think this is the best skit they done. i used to like gorman but he just does all thi crap for cash

  • loved peepshow, but mitchell and webb sketch shoqs just don't do it for me. no idea why they're having a go at dave gorman. wasn't particulary funny anyway.

  • i think its more a go at danny "no talent" wallace rather than dave "legitimate comedian and writer" gorman.

    i.e wallace is a tit.

  • @dayiiv Hahahahaha. Win.

  • and danny wallace was persistent in trying to ruin assassins creed 2

  • If anything it's a Tony "Round Ireland With A Fridge" Hawks parody...

  • While I do like this and think Mitchell and Webb are very funny, Dave Gorman is incredibly funny. I have seen a lot of his standup and always found it brilliant, his last show was not about a crazy bet or adventure, he was just being funny.

  • "building a cathedral out of ham"

  • Gorman is good, and he has good ideas. But Mitchell and Webb are awesome.

  • yeah, I feel this sketch! Dave Gorman and the rest of them are just pointless - not funny, it's more of a kind of 'look at me', which I don't get

  • i take it your joking i like gorman but hes done nothing near as good as mitchell and webb

  • btw, mitchell and webb catagorically said in an interview, that this isnt a direct parody of dave gorman. Just a reality twat mockery

  • LOL

  • lovely

  • "crazy in a different and less harrowing way".

    Lulz

  • Stupid american, unless you have a herpes fetish.

  • @Diddles75

herpes is pretty hilarious... *sigh* i miss my sex life...

  • this is great

  • are you Dave gorman was also the result of a drunken bet beween wallace and gorman

  • It's more Tony Hawks (not the skateboarder) as Dave Gorman. He did Round Ireland with a Fridge, Playing the Moldovans at Tennis and One Hit Wonder. All of which were the result of bets with a famous comedian.

  • Totally. It's a Tony Hawks reference.

  • ...and all of which were totally unfunny

  • This week's Guardian had an article about one woman's year without sex..."This article is an extract from.........priced £7.99..etc"

  • in 2 years time I will be bringing out a book called 10 years without sex ...................well thats my excuse

  • The Daily Mail had it as well.

  • Whether or not this character was actually based on Dave Gorman it should be noted that Robert Webb officially denied it being so.

  • I like the Richard & Judy parody element too.

  • Spot on parody on those douchebags

  • Gorman and Wallace are legends

  • i think this is excellent. i'm sure gorman and wallace would take it in good humour and theres no need for their fans to take offence on there behalf. besides, theres no pretending either of them do this kind of stuff for self reaffirmation then decide it would make a popular book or show afterwards.

  • @bailzzzzzz Disagreeing slightly - you're right, it's all in good humour, but Dave Gorman didn't live his Googlewhack Adventure so he could make a show. In his own words, "I do this show to get me out of the financial misery that all this left me in".

  • @bailzzzzzz Those fans Should take offence; because they are idiots. :)

    (or they wouldn't be fans)

  • For anyone who is a fan of Gorman, Hawks and Mitchell & Webb and who might feel put-out by this, remember Rob Brydon's equally brilliant piss-takes of his fellow performers' schticks (including Peep Show, no less) on Annually Retentive. It's normally nothing more than the sort of mutual banter you often get on panel shows, an environment that Mitchell especially is no stranger to.

  • I really like Mitchel and Webb and Davie Gorman ,but I think this is 3/10 ,to quote Peter Griffin,it insits upon itself

  • I like this sketch, but I'd probably find it more amusing if my own book of heartwarming scrapes, 'playing the Moldovans at tennis... WITH A FRIDGE' hadn't bombed so badly

  • couldn't agree more....

  • quality sketch

  • whys my hole view of youtube upside down?

  • Same Here OMG !

  • April fool?

  • if you understood it you might think so

  • nah mate, you stick to peep show

  • Unlike those pricks Gorman and Hawks that was actually funny.

  • are you saying freedom of speech has made u angry? you dont want freedom of speech?

  • wow, bit over the top there, im sure that comment was advocating fascism...

  • Ah, the old "freedom of speech" argument. I wonder if you'll be using that argument if you hear someone being racist . . .

  • Ah, the old "freedom of speech" argument. I wonder if you'll use that argument if you hear someone being racist, Katanajoe7 . . .

And you'll notice I didn't start acting like a child and say "are you a racist, Katanajoe? Do you hate anyone with a different skin colour than you because you love freedom of speech so much?"

  • Hahaha

    Also applies to Tony Hawks!!

  • Haha. 'Crossing Africa in a Carrier bag' is a great gag.

  • Love the "I call him Ricky - I know him." coz Ricky is his real name.

  • I like it, its a little bitchy, but at the same point spot on :) im still a fan of Gorman and Wallace though :D

  • This is soo funny, but the girl in the clip ruin it a bit.

  • I love 'em but David Goreman is way cooler

  • this is meant to be Danny Wallace more than Dave Gorman isnt it? Danny Wallace, mitchell and webb are all soo funny

  • yeh it is more danny wallace

  • That car says "Politie" which is Dutch for "Police" so he could have asked the question in Dutch aswell

  • this is funny, but just maybe you dont find it funny.

  • it's satire. git welcome to England..

  • Please dont eat the locals ^_^

  • you Welsh? well I won't hold it agaisn't you as I just saw Seren Gibson on page 3 so I'm most content with you sods for now :)

  • this represents dave how?

  • Turning a drunken bets into "heart-warming scrapes" with profitable films and books documenting said scrape?

    Gosh, I have no idea...

  • the WHOLE of it is a parody of Gormanesqye nonsense you fool!

  • Yeh especially the stuff about "flatmates" getting involved... I actually quite like Wallace and Gorman's books but i admit that they are a bit cynically made

  • @BenParasite Making a cup of tea for everyone in Belgium sounds more like a Tony Hawks kind of thing to me...

  • Well

  • @hartnell114 Googlw-whack, people with the same name etc. It's pretty accurate. He's such a wanker. Also Tony Hawks with his trip around Ireland with a fridge, his bet that he could beat the Bulgarian (?) soccer team at badminton... Not a bad guy but you want to punch him in the face for doing those things... and then writing books and making radio shows out of them T_T

  • @ozoneocean He was playing the Moldovans at tennis!

  • "I call him Ricky - i know him" haha!

  • I'm certainly not a huge fan of Mitchell & Webb - I think Peep Show is hugely overrated - but by the same token whilst i enjoy Gorman's work, I think the rise of this "trend of TV shows and books (where the) premise for them all is simple: Make an absurd bet in the pub, then make a huge wad of cash trying - and endearingly failing - to accomplish said bet, as the subject of a fly-on-the-wall documentary" is ripe for parody and this sketch is a good start.

  • Kudos to yourself for the use of chutzpah in a Youtube comment and to onepiecemachine for the comment I have borrowed from. :)

  • benparasite thankyou for uploading i love that mitchell and webb look :D

  • But what in that makes it 'depressing'? Youtube is a way of sharing video content with other users. If it wasn't on here you probably would have never seen it, much less have an opportunity to opine about it.

  • Why so?

  • You do know there is footage of blackwater mercenaries using iraqi pedestrians as target practice on youtube?

  • call i'm jaded, but that's not a huge suprise. this was.

  • I wouldn't call someone jaded for showing shock at a piece of pop culture being made fun off.

  • It can't be THE most depressing thing... I saw a video a guy made as tribute to his Ex-girlfriend because she dumped him. How about Kenneth Eng and his extraordinary racism and belief he's a dragon? Might be a trace of hyperbole in there.

  • might also be that i don't watch much on youtube.

  • That could be it, yes.

Either way, it's a matter of opinion, if you don't like it that's fine.

  • lol i have that pink top

  • lol

  • he's been on the dialy show a few times

  • What a random person to parody.

  • Of course, no one will let me! haha

  • I don't get it... Must be a British inside joke thing.

  • They're just poking fun at a recent trend of TV shows and books (exemplified by a bloke called Dave Gorman). The premise for them all is simple: Make an absurd bet in the pub, then make a huge wad of cash trying - and endearingly failing - to accomplish said bet, as the subject of a fly-on-the-wall documentary. The people concerned tend not to be celebrities in their own right - although Gorman has obviously risen to fame now.

As usual; funny the first time, yawn-worthy the twentieth.

  • Yeah I don't know the guy he's probably famous in Britain but we have never heard of him over here in the US.

  • Dave Gorman: America Unchained is about him trying to cross the US without spending any money in 'chain' businesses. Quite ironic that it was shot entirely in the US but - since he's not famous there at all - no one has heard about it!

In my opinion, America is not missing out by not being exposed to this.

  • Well we have over 500+ channels on the TV so he might have been on 1 just not main stream channels though.

  • Maybe he wasn't on any of them at all!

  • I think he probably was. We get shows from Japan sometimes.

  • "Quite ironic that it was shot entirely in the US."

    Doesn't seem ironic.

  • exactly. It's a show about finding independant stores, motels & gas stations in America. It would be a bit odd if it was shot in Chiswick.

  • Exactly. :D

  • Wow, someone's jealous...

  • erm, i dont think this is very funny, or accurate either, sorry.
