  • For anyone who stillwsatches this in 2k12. The reason why they thought there were horns on the helmets was because they often found a helm and a horn in their grave. The horn was never attached to the helm. Infact it was used to drink from.

  • There are AFAIK three origins for the horned helmet. One is that multiple rock art sites both native and middle eastern (showing invasions) depict Eastern European warriors with horned helmets in the bronze age. Another is that horned helmets have been excavated from Scandinavia that are considered to have been some kind of ceremonial accessory rather than military gear. Third is that there were cheap helmets made out of horn plates. plate and scale armor were invented in horn and waxed hide.

  • What? they wore no Horned helmets ?? this is Blasphemy !! this is madness !!

  • I ALWAYS ASKED MYSELFFFF I DON'T LIKE HORNED HELMETS, I PREFER LONG HAIR AND LONG BEARD LOL

  • Yeah, vikings had no horns in the helmets, It's a fabricated corporate myth.

    They -blew- horns.

  • Horned helmets look cool. Very barbaric. That's the only reason. In reality, if somebody in battle hits you in the horn, your helmet either falls off, breaks your neck or the horn itself comes off, as there is no way in hell to properly mount it on a curved piece of metal. Still, don't we all just love stereotypes?

  • LOL YOUR CRAZYY

  • we never useed horned helmets

  • THANK YOU!

  • but it seems rather silly because i could grab that horn and have control of their head in battle if need be. so it seems like a bad idea. But who knows they were crazy fucks who didnt give a shit.

  • @th3planetsghost

To a certain point, yes. But they must have been reasonable and at least decent at tactical thinking to some extent since there is some mention in the sagas about them working as mercenaries for various kings and lords.

I personally think that the whole "raging mindless barbarian" thing was probably something they tried to make themselves seem like to make others fearful of them. An early form of psychological warfare.

  • umm it was prolly a personal choice what your armour looked like.

  • @th3planetsghost they did not have horned helmets not a single one has been found

  • lol, why do a video about something like this? evryone whos not an stupid american without education or just plainly retarded knows this.... and if ur gonna do a video wich proves this do it better..

  • @Malmen15 why do you stereotype that Americans are stupid

  • @legocrazy4554 Because it's their strongest stereotype. It's not true, however, just like the horned helmets.

  • Vikings didn´t have to wear horned helmets.. horns grew out of their skuls.. the vikings only needed gig barrels of beer nothing more.

  • Vikings didnt wear horned helmets, the only horned helmet that has been found in scandinavia was a ritual-helm dating much several houndred years before the viking age. A horned helmet wouldnt be usefull in battle either since the helmet's role is to make the attack bounce/slide off the helmet to prvent damage to the head, a horn would hook the weapon and cause more damage to the head.

  • The fairy tale of vikings having horned helmets was started by a opera that featured vikings with horned helmets.. and they did it because of a misunderstanding. The celts wore horned helmets though, for ritual use. But my ancestors did not. There has only been found one viking helm(found in Norway, its in museum in Oslo), so viking helms were not common wear, they were very rare. But vikings did use spangenhelms though, like rest of Europe.

  • Though most people here in scandinavia knows that the vikings did not use horns on their helmets, its americans that often think they wore horned helmets according to my experience.

I wish people stopped using horned helmets when visualizing/picturing vikings..because its wrong and they only make the case worse.. use the real viking helm instead, "Gjermundbuhjelmen".

  • Fuck fucketi fuck fuck...Damn you to HEL YouTube!

  • loved the subliminal message!

Didn't the horn thing originate from when the english monks described the vikings in their books, after being plundered? They drew horns on them to make them look more like the devil...

    Maybe that's a myth aswell?

  • I don't think it would have been practical to wear horns in war anyway lol.

  • Well, as long as nothing`s found you`ll get away with your expectasion...but still; I can live and hope for the day to show up;-)

  • Just because no helmets with horns have appeared jet, doesn`t prove they didn`t exist.

As far as I know theres found just a very few numbers of viking-helmets, so keep on looking. BTW...most norwegians are borned with horns, thats why we rules;-)

  • They have found one viking helm, but there are no sources on horned helmets, the myth was borned because of a missunderstanding/bad research, it was in a opera the horned helmets appeard. Ive read 3000+ pages of norse history and there is no mention of horned helmets.

The vikings were skilled warriors and smiths, they made their equipment to be effective, not just to look cool. And a horned helmet would not be effective in battle at all. Most vikings didnt even wear helms.

  • the reason viking did not wear horned helmets cuz the horns themselfs. An enemy could easlie just grab the horn and pull the helmet off.

  • it´s kinda ironic that the most famous viking attribute is the horned helmet when in fact vikings didn´t where any such. there´s thousands of viking findings here in sweden and not a single helmet found has had any horns on them

  • Exactly. It just goes to show that we should question even those things we take for granted.

    Heia Sverige!!!

  • I do support gay rights and I am a liberal, yes. And my academic expertise is Scandinavian history at a postgraduate level from one of Britain's leading university medieval history departments.

These notions are not incompatible. I don't see the problem. What is yours?

  • Hehe, exactly. Danish vikings were pussies anyway. ;-)

And what have the Danes ever done for us (apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health)?

  • I have Danish friends and I talk all the time about horned helmets!

Since the Danes aren't Vikings anymore, I figure I can get away with this. I'm like, "Whatcha gonna do, member of one of the most egalitarian and least violent countries on earth? Huh? HUH?!"

So far he has not buried a battleaxe in my skull. ;)

  • Scandinavian medieval history is what I studied at university (both BA and master's). I love the stuff. And, yes, I do agree with your conclusion. The default position however should be that horned helmets didn't exist until they can be proved to have existed. Sounds a bit like an argument that we use re: god, isn't it? ;-)

  • When I was about 13 I read a book called Viking's Dawn by Henry Treece. I have loved viking stuff ever since. I had a time/Life book on the vikings, all about bodies found in peat bogs etc. I love the connectivity between vikings/norsemen/normans. I had figured from the Sutton Hoo helmet and Norman helmets that horns were probably a rarity. We can't say that NO viking ever had horns, we just ain't found one yet.

  • love this song!

  • Bathory rocks!!!

  • damn, I've got a viking first name and never knew this. Thank you, I know feel much more comfortable and self-confident! Though it's gonna be a pain in the ass to get rid of all the horns on my helmets. May Odin be with you!

  • You're welcome, Boomfist. May I recommend a hefty cleaver or maybe a hooked axe? The latter is especially efficient if the horns are not plastic, but actual ox horn.

You may now go. Loot, pillage, raid! Onwards my brothers and sisters. Last one in the longboat's a Frankish monk!

  • Nice little comment in the end!:P:P...nice initiative:P

I'm tired of the myth too!

    btw....what music is it?

  • Thank you!

    It's "Valhalla", track 2 on Bathory's album "Hammerheart" (1990).

I'm an aging heavy metaller. ;-)

  • Where's my comment? Shitty YouTube. I had left a comment here a few days ago about how I didn't know about this and that it was a bummer because I quite liked the stereotypical horned helmets. Anyway, keep it up, mate.
