  • Thanks for the info ;)

  • New version released today!

  • This video is 5 years old, believe it or not people this app has improved since then.

  • for me albert works better

  • People saying Quicksilver is analogous to Spotlight apparently have not used QS's advanced actions. Spotlight just finds things. Quicksilver finds things AND performs actions: text manipulation, passing data into scripts, launch specific songs in iTunes, etc. The list goes on and on.

  • I'm just going to continue using spotlight.

  • hÍhi_ÅNÿ_gÜÿs_wáÑt_tô_chÀt_wÍth_me

  • For people who are saying that this is a shitty spotlight. Yes, this is a down version of a spotlight. But it existed longer than spotlight.. So don't bash it down, it was an awesome program.

  • so basically its a shity spotlight...

  • Quicksilver is the same thing as GnomeDo for Linux look it up... I use GnomeDo all the time...

  • Spotlight works just fine, this doesn't seem to do anything I can't already do with spotlight.

  • thank you!

your video helped me get started with quicksilver really easily.

Keep up the good work! :)

  • nice app , looks a lot like gnome-do

  • Spotlight "does the job" if you're just using QS to launch apps. But it does a lot more than that.

  • for me spotlight does the job

  • @alsamuef also for me, i don't get what peaple have against spotlight!?

  • @alsamuef Agreed but Spotlight cannot do half of the tasks that QS does. Like append text to email or attachments for that matter.

  • @chkdg8 you can do that with services

however with quicksilver [or enso] you do not need to browse menus

  • lol spotlight....

  • it's a great app but i would rather use finder and that's just because it's ''wasting'' space because you get finder with the mac and finder is basically the same thing i don't know that some people just prefer quicksilver so this is just me

  • Why not just use Spotlight? It's built into the OS and works exactly the same.

  • Quicksilver can do much more than Spotlight.

You can compose e-mails from within Quicksilver, you can control iTunes, edit text documents, image manipulation, etc etc.

  • am I missing something? I don't get the point of this spotlight can do that too.. how is quicksilver different than spotlight?

  • @p7811fx Thanks man for pointing out. am a happy mac user and i support you and i dont want people to use MAC so that i wont be having virus in future. You are a virus pron windows user i guess and you are so proud to have virus :D :P

  • By the way you Mac fanboys say that Windows 7 copied your GUI, but in reality you actually have your OS based heavily off of Xerox PARC. Even if Microsoft did copy you we earned it because we bailed you when you were in serious fiscal trouble so that your business would stay afloat.

Mac GUI = Stolen from PARC.

Mac Fanboys = Need to learn the history of your OS.

  • sorry, a BSOD just prevented me from finishing reading your post

  • Here's a lesson for you Mr. Know It All. PARC Exec's could see no business use for the GUI that their engineer's had developed. Steve Jobs and his Macintosh team took the work that the PARC engineers had created an applied it to computers, not printers, with the idea that everyone would be able to operate a computer without having to be a programmer/uber geek. This is why so many of the PARC Team left Xerox to go work for Apple.

  • Don't think MS bailed Apple out. Typical of MS Fanboy revisionist history the truth is usually 180 Degree's in the other direction. MS purchase of Apple stock was to save their own asses. They had gotten busted stealing code from Apple, were worried that if Apple did go out of business that their patent portfolio would lead to round of lawsuits from the new owners, and they were making a killing with Office for the Mac,

  • @brittdennis WoW what a theory... it's a shame that you are absolutely wrong, and this is why: the supposed ctrl+C os apple's code was no theft... and that because that code (supposing you are talking about 2009 apple/MS scandal) wasn't apples property.

Want so prof? go check the biggest news agencies for news from late 2009/early 2010. :)

  • Google: "Mac Office, $150 Million, and the Story Nobody Covered" and read the BS tactics your company employed to become the Monopoly the DOJ found them to be, it sure wasn't through superior products!

  • @p7811fx Dude why are you dieing to save us from Mac? Did MS paid you.. What ever we are we are happy

  • LOL.. thats your analysis.. but I am in software industry for about 8yrs now and am a developer. i am using both the OS every day along with Fedora and ubuntu and i use a WAIO and a macbook pro and still i love my Mac. Lot of reasons are there but best parts are no virus, clean interface, better performance and ya the apple laptop has the best ergonomy with awesome touch pad :) cool down dude. If you get enough money use a mac atleast once before shouting.

  • Mac OS market share is fail.

If you look at HHI of both Linux and Windows you see that they go well above the 1800 mark (Over 9000 to be exact (not trying to act like a 4chan-er, but it seriously is over 9000)).

They scored over 9000 on the HHI. Windows and Linux = Oligopoly! Windows and Linux have a barrier of entry of Mac OS, so Macs are constantly getting raped on every sale they make because they have little to no control over the OS market!!!

  • Wow...

    a Finder within the Finder.

why would I want to learn a new set of commands for opening

a file, when I can just click on the file in Finder??

This app is absolute overkill B.S.

  • Lol, the video is 10:06. Only 10 minutes is allowed. and I dont think he's a partner

  • i've seen video's that are more than 20minutes, how do you do that?

  • users with partnership have unlimited lenght but like 4gb limit or sumthin. look up "longest video on youtube" itl like almost 5 hours long!

  • Actually, the maximum video length is 10:59.

  • @Aman1238

Your videos can be pretty much endless, just if the file is under 2GB.

  • Excellent Vid. very helpful, clear and no bs. Thanks!!!

  • HOLY COW! someone's been cheating on their views!

only 272 ratings and 4 videos!

  • Pair this with Typeit4me to revolutionize your Mac.

  • reminds me of gnome-do

  • This is great, but why cant you just click the file or app?

  • if you have many apps you may prefere use quicksilver to start them

  • I just started using it - i see why its popular. A much faster way to do stuff! I like it !

  • I know, I thought the same thing. It's way more complicated than dragging it to the dock and just opening it from there.

No insult to the person who uploaded this, he did great, but I think it's too complicated.

  • Great question that goes to the fundamental reason for Quicksilver. You *can* click a file or app, but that requires a mouse action (or 10). With Quicksilver, you get directly to the object by *TYPING*.

GUI's are good for discovering deep objects if you don't already remember every step along the hierarchy. GUI's are an encumberance if you already know the name, and have visually scan a list, then mouse, at very many levels. GUI's add friction for expert users.

  • And Spotlight can't do that. Oh, wait.

  • Well, this is useful on Panther machines and I personally use it to manage keyboard shortcuts to control stuff like iTunes globally from any program and to do the simple stuff when I'm using my Model M keyboard that doesn't have a Command key.

Spotlight is better for all of the simple stuff in this demo, though. Its deeper features are great, though.

  • Have it in VirtualPC!

  • Everything he does in the start is also what Spotlight does. :S

  • nope

  • Yes.

iDeneb/Hackintosh makes it possible to install Mac OS X on a windows. However, a lot of the hardware won't be compatible as your computer is meant to run Windows and windows compatible hardware.

There are also specifications for installing it. Your processor must have the SSE2 and SSE3 attributes.

I would not recommend trying this if you have no idea what you're doing.

  • spotlight does the SAME THING. it learns from habits too, i use photoshop a lot, now, if just type in the letter" p", photoshop comes up right away, i love it!. Quicksilver is tedius most of the time. more options isn't always " Better". people just bandwagon popular apps just like they do iphones

  • I personally never liked quicksilver. I find that spotlight is very effective at searching your entire mac and even as a dictionary function.

  • isnt this essentially the same as the spotlight search thing that's built into the os x by default? it's just an easier way to find stuff?

and doesnt it take up more memory to run it in the background all the time? y not just use spotlight search?

  • I have a question. I just bought the 2009 imac. I know the camera is built in but I was wondering if you can make a video of what you are doing on the desktop like you are doing here?

  • screen recorder, screenflow is the best

  • Yup. Lol.

  • QuickTime X is the best. And its free, imagine that.

  • its called iShowU

  • Thank you. This was very helpful. Cheers.

  • is this cam video

  • WOW! How did it install the plug-in so fast?

  • is it just me or does that (00:21) look like chrome's logo?

  • do one plug in at a time, it wont take so long

  • haha lol...when he said "check back in a sec" he really meant it... 7:16

  • err, srry i meant install plug ins

  • how come when i downloaded this and tried to download the recommended plug-ins...it would just say "downloading 5 plug-ins" and just hang there

  • Have the same problem

  • uh, why not just click on your dock icons to open your apps...or use spotlight to find your documents? Overkill perhaps??

  • spotlight is slow, and it doesn't learn your history and become personalized

  • No, it's not. It works instantly on my Mac mini. And what's the benefit of it being "personalized"? It's faster to use Spotlight and the Dock and they don't use your system resources—unlike this, which is an app.

  • There is nothing wrong with using the dock and spotlight, but for powerusers, quicksilver is like the beefed up version.

  • Obvious troll is obvious.

  • i still think its best for all mac users to stick to the FINDER way to surf your files and folders, apps and stuff. Its fast, it has all the setting you need if you like to, so i think you dont really need this type or app. Its fine and has great power "quicksilver" but still, instead of going thru this hole process to get it, keep it out and use finder, its best. Great video man!

  • Photoshop users don't become pro while still using the menu options and without having learned the shortcuts...

  • true but what does that have to do with anything?

  • pro/professional means getting paid for the work. That's all.

  • en, thanks for sharing

  • It would be great if the video had less black border and a bigger zoom.

  • Notive how the video lasts 10:07, 7 seconds more than you can do it now, newer user.

  • This person could be a YouTube Partner

  • why do the windows look like they are turning in the installation?

  • because they are

  • good demonstration thanks

  • how is this different the spotlight?

  • Quicksilver doesn't just search for the files like Spotlight, it gives you options to interact with it and predicts what program you are looking for by keeping count of which programs you use most.

  • Ooooh! He dosent understand English so he wants everyone to comment to him in spanish!

  • thank you can anwers my cuestions in espanish

  • jwd , ur outta control, windows search cant even compare to osx spotlight, quicksilver blows windows search out the water

  • I just downloaded QS. I am trying to follow your tutorial, but for some reason when I go under install plugins section in preferences nothing is there. How do I get the long list of plugins like you had?

  • i got finder and spotlight, but it is handy anyway... maybe i get it

and u write FAST man!! wow !!!

  • @earl6282

Your fingers never leave the keyboard with QS. If you're using the dock, your hands come off the keyboard to use the mouse. May not sound like a big deal, but over the course of an 8 hour day, the time adds up. It's more about efficiency than convenience.

    @margheritapizza

QS is more powerful and flexible. You can write plugins for it. It can send email and do math problems. It can open a web browser to a specific URL. All quicker and with fewer mouse and keystrokes.

  • Great video man. very informational. Im downloading it now!

  • I can't see how this isn't just a duplicate of spotlight?

It runs with cmd + space.

It searches for files and applications and allows you to run them.

    It learns from search history.

This just serves the same purpose as built-in function

  • If all you use quicksilver as an app launcher, then yes you are right. However, Quicksilver can do much much more. Go see the more advanced Quicksilver videos to find out.

  • Command+space -> begin typing "camino" -> hit enter. That's what you did to launch Camino.

Now explain how that's more convenient than just having camino in the dock and clicking it.

  • This isnt the only feature...hotkeys are generally quicker than mouse movements.

  • COuld you put the website link for quicksilver in the description f the video??.

  • Excellent video! In case anyone is wondering, a Windows/Linux equivalent of this would be "Launchy".

  • Launchy and Quicksilver are great but I never think to use them! My friends agree, they never think to use them.

  • Ehhh.... you call that convenience?

Then I understand why you're happy with Windows! :P

What you suggest is not comparable to Quicksilver.

    Snore even more.

  • absolutley man;) quicksilver is just so useful. I ask myself how I could ever live without it:P

  • how do you reply like that!?

  • yea, i used to do that when i had windows like 5-6 years ago. windows is still in the stone age. evolve you damn cave man!

  • @maddoxaom - And in Vista - And even more improved in Windows 7, the start Menu's search in even more intuitive and is probably as good or better than Quicksilver. Indexing is the key either way.

  • ehm... guy... this software is more than 2 years old. and you do copare it with win7 which comes in 1-2 years (maybe)?? thats funny :)

  • no no no... Windows Vista's search feature isn't close to the ability of quick silver. Vista and Spotlight search through your Mac/PC, but Quicksilver can perform actions, such as new email, new contact, etc. That's what makes it superior over both Spotlight and Instant Search, both of which aren't even close to the power of Quicksilver.

  • the start menu's search is a copy of spotligh....in fact windows7 is a copy of mac osx

  • god dam it! it's an OS!! just USE IT!!!

  • Installing it on my macbook air.

  • Great video, good introduction to a program that, by the looks of it, I am gonna love.

  • nah, this is tons faster than spotlight. just try it and get used to it. it learns your preferences and just does things so much faster and more intuitively

  • great stuff mate! it really helped me a lot! :)

  • why have quiksilver if you have spotlight??

  • Quicksilver is BAD for your OS and is just another Login Item that ultimately just slows down your system. It's just eye candy seriously stick with Spotlight.

  • Great application

  • How do you record your screen on mac?

  • Keynote

  • It doesn't matter, I found iShowU.

  • keynote?you are wrong mate i record my screen with screenflow is commercial programm (they give you trial but is recommended to buy it :)

  • I still don't understand how this differs from Spotlight. They both achieve the same result at the same speed..

  • this is the best app ever.. spotlight is too slow

  • Thank you soo much, that was so useful!

I was thinking about getting this app, but now i am definitely going to download it.

    Thanks

  • Thankyou! Articulate, concise and very handy, Great tutorial!

  • wuts the point of this u can do all that with spotlight

  • It goes much farther than this.

  • this is not a video about windows vs. linux vs. mac.. stop dragging these conversations with you all day everyday on every video?

  • quicksilver is awesome!!!

  • what do you use to record your screen on mac os x

  • ScreenFlow

  • thanks im getting a mac soon and i do tutorials via screen recorder... when i get my mac ill download screenflow... is it free?

  • No, it's $100 XD

A better (and cheaper) alternative is Screenium, which is only $20 (I think, could be $40).

  • the only "why" I hate mac is the marketing strategy of damn apple!! these idiots:/ but the mac is great. I use it for creating music and for work it's a solid and good environment...

  • yeah but then u have to use a mouse:P

  • I agree. Why is there that much Mac haters? Windows users are scared... Revolution is coming.

  • Windows haters are just as bad.

  • THANK YOU:)

  • If Macs are gay then why are you watching this?

  • OSX FTW!!!

  • CLICK EVERYTHING ON CATALOG before DOING PLUG-INS

  • CLICK EVERYTHING ON CATALOG before DOING PLUG-INS

  • wow nice.

i've been using quicksilver since June, i had no idea you could do that much with it!

(p.s. i play games on my mac, and i have a 5 button mouse... get educated on soemthing before you condemn it)

  • Yep ur right. With Mac you just have to click, that's all, how boring. Consider Vista, if you click once, you'll get to click twice in the UAC, then more and more until you're either bored or death. Hooray Windows - Endless fun!

  • really? thats exactly why we can run windows natively like the childs toy it is?

  • great!

  • What processor are you using on your Mac? (Intel or Power PC?) I'm expecting, if it's Intel, that it'll work in Leopard. I'm not expecting it to work in Panther...nothing new works in Panther anymore. LOL

  • Use an app called crossover ( gives you the ability to play games or emulate WINDOWNS APPS )
