Was a teen in the 80s but I remember alot of this music. I took an appreciation to music as early as 6 and can still remember some of the memories associated with, good as well as bad but I would never trade those memories for anything in the world. I'm sure every generation feels the same.
The music of one's youth -- esp. teens & 20s -- created the strongest associations in your memory. If you were miserable & lonely in the 70s, the music from that period will remind you of it. It will make you miserable, even if from a critical point of view you admire it. If you were happy in the 80s, you'll have a fondness for the music of that period, even if otherwise you don't care for it.
So the likes of FREE, DAVID ESSEX, and, MIDDLE OF THE ROAD were ONE hit wonders???????????? Eh!!! Not to mention the rest. Did you even live through the 70s? I was 16 when that decade rolled in, wouldnt have missed for the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@dcmacleod1 R U kidding? There were shitty stereos then, there are shitty stereos now but the classic equipment from the 70's is still sought after today for its sonic quality. You probably just couldn't afford a decent rig when you were a teenager.
For those that think Gilbert O'Sullivan was a pedifile, it was written to make you think he was besotten by a lady, but the words were just fine for a toddler once you knew you'd been had.
I can think of hundreds, literally, of songs in that era that were wonderful and never make the list. I was 11 when Willy Willy Willy Won't go Home, and I thought that song was really fun.
I was born in '59 and it was difficult for me to relate to more than a handfull of songs after 1979 except from the very best. I didn't know people didn't like the music of their own generation. I just didn't care for disco or most of the country at that time.
@FIORELLOINVENTIONS we didn't have kiddie fiddling back in the 70's, well obviously there was but without the internet, it wasn't as widespread as it is today. So you can't really apply today's warped standards to a much more innocent time.
@puterzhome Was it really? Fuel crisis began, Viet Nam continued, America just began to see Japan take over manufacturing, government became publicly corrupt with Watergate, the south was extremely racist and the KKK continued to rally, Carter lost to the first terrorist acts on hostages, and AIDs began it's destructive force on the world. As a teenager, you were obliviously stoned on weak marijuana, the abortion movement began, women's lib, crime was on the rise. Yeah, it was what it was.
@marizmendi1656 hi there ,greetings from ireland .the name of the song that you think is mexico is called Battle of New Orleans .the version i have is sung by this guy Johnny Horton so type his name and battle of new orleans and you will see it there migh be other singers doing it as well .hope this helps jim
@MrJimdug Hi Jim, greetins from Colombia, Thanks a lot for the info, with that name I have found many, many versions, all country styled, good versions...How ever I prefer the fast 70´s version and finally, thanks to you I have founded the version from Les Humphries Singers - and it is called Mexico as I supposed...Thanks, thanks again.
Hi everybody, I'm Dick Nixon. My admirer Ygor has channeled me. If you folks yearn for the 1970s, I think that's great. I'll open your mail, tap your phone and have your pics filed with the FBI. Oh, and if you feel like marching in the streets, pack some extra clothes. I'll find a way to lock your ass up!! Hee-hee, just kidding.
@dbd1353 Middle of the was a Scottish pop group who enjoyed success across Europe and Latin America in the early 1970s. Three of their singles sold over one million copies each, and received a gold disc. By early 1972 alone the group had sold over five million records..
I lived the 60s,70s,80, great 90s til present day stink no Talent Just T&A miley syrus and the lot stink and they start them at 13yrs old Flooding the market with trash. one hit wonder made in a week.. No Gilberts, manilow, humperdinks Neil sadka, Connie Francis.

Ah, the 70's briliant music, and so memorable nowadays. Gilbert O sulivan is a seriuously underrated singer/sogwriter. Fond memories of the seventies!
"Claire" was a pretty good - sized hit in the USA. I'll take "Get Down" , personally , out of anything Gilbert O'Sullivan ever did. "Mexico" is an adaptation of Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" , a big hit , probably anywhere but England , where Lonnie Donnegan released a version with altered lyrics. Hey, it's FUN to see this stuff , whether you like the songs or not.
@pfordsq Gilbert O"Sullivan was a pedophile who was screwing an under aged lad in Scotland named Claire who he turned into a heroin addicted prostitute.
@MrRichardKraniun I've never heard that , but , you have to remember , Gilbert O' Sullivan is largely forgotten in the states , save for 3 or 4 Pop hits that are virtually never played on Oldies radio.
For all you people who are naysaying of this music, may I ask: How many Gold albums do you have to your name or group? These songs are all certified Gold. And in the early 70's you could not go 15 minutes on the radio without hearing one of them.
Why listen if you have no appreciation of music for the sake of music.
Oh, right, it has no words like shit, fuck, queer, hate or bigotry in them so they are not good, right?
Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, safe, and envelope, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some say they hear, do it.
I was a teenager in the 1970s, which I consider the last free decade...free from worry of so many horrible things my kids have to worry about...I consider the 70s or the 50s (based on my mom and dad's memories) to be the best decades to be a teen. The 60's and all the rest - just yuck.

@justaman6972 funny you mentioned the Gap Band " Yearning For Your Love" is one of my all time favorites--- and "Love's Holiday" by Earth Wind and Fire is another tune so mellow!!!--- take care
@mattdaddyful scum like you shouldnt be on here,as a music fan let me point out it was written when his daughter was born.People like you must be the dodgy ones especially as if you need to insult, learn to spell you moron now crawl away back to your pit
Don't panic guys. This may be the "Christian" side of the 70's. I can't say I've ever even heard of 99% of this stuff, and I lived through the 70's. This is probably from somewhere in the US, maybe somewhere in the bible belt. And it's bringing back good memories for whoever posted this. That's all fine. But that's not the 70's I know.
