I am from Pittsburgh.. Watched Mario growing up. Still I maintain that Pavel Bure was the best ever to lace 'em up. I will argue that until my dying day. Nobody could touch this kid.period. I believe that he took a lot of cheap shots from guys over jealousy and the fact that he was Russian. Dudes couldn't hang so they let the goon squad take over. Still after how many knee surgeries he was burning folks. Enough said.
What in the world were the Canucks ever thinking letting this guy go. Pavel was the face of the franchise, not that 70 point checker Trevor Linden. No offence but Bure had rare gifts. Vancouver is were Bure should have ended his career.
His talent is his agility. You have guys who are so called danglers in this modern day game who are good with the stick handling like Datsyuk but as Bure demonstrated in this video, his whole body was able to elude the defender and that's a special gift. I think they said he took ballet as a youngster so I wouldn't doubt it. Such a graceful skater. As far as beating records goes, Gretzky's era was a few notches behind Bure's and the current NHL where is even better (or bigger pads).
@userofahomosite I dont know about that. Im not a Gretzky fan at all but Im not sure you can really say that. Now if you would have put him WITH Gretzky, he would have outscored Kurri. Probably would have anyways.
@tjcurrie@tjcurrie Yeah I agree. Kurri but not Gretzky. Bure deserves props for accomplishing what he did without having a Trottier or Gretzky as his center (not that Linden or Ronning were horrible, they're just not up there). But I also agree that it's doubtful he would exceed Gretzky. 200+ points? Mike Bossy's best year was 147 points and that was *still* 65 points behind Gretzky's 212 points. I could see him hitting the 80 goal mark however.
@jessc1979 I wouldn't doubt him being able to hit the 80 goal mark back then. And hey, maybe even more. So reaching Gretzky's goal record isn't a ridiculous stretch, but ya the points record I just don't see it. Bure was a goal scorer so let's say he even reached 95 goals, he still needs 118 assists. And if he reached "just" 80 goals, then obviously he would need another 133 assists. Not happening.
@userofahomosite you think that flash is greater than smarts. bure was great, Gretzky -- the greatest.bure's skills were the best. unreal. Gretzky's brain was his tool that fooled. and of course, he was highly skilled. but he revolutionized the game. they changed rules because of the way he played the game. almost perfect.
i remember listening to this game and the announcers were speechless when he start blasting down the ice. The game definitely got faster once he came on board.

Let's put it this way...
if Bure played in the 80's on the oilers he would have more goals than gretzky. maybe even points.
