A number of different Okinawan systems use this sort of hip movement. A number of the modern styles such as Shotokan and Shito Ryu and many other hybrid systems either eliminated the hip movements or never learned them in the beginning. I am not sure if they are helpful or not.
Matt - RU asking me, "if I have him doing the kata in colour?" If so, no, I don't; but, to the best of my knowledge, he learned the kata from Higa Yuchoku. Might be worth looking around to see if anyone has a copy of Higa sensei performing the kata.
The only person I've seen move their hips like that is Morio Higaonna. Is that something that has been lost over the years for tournament presentation's sake? Sometimes I wonder if the snappiness done in kata for tourneys is failing to teach the proper generation of power and torque.
@recalcitrantdefiance No the hip movement in kata is often seen in Kyudokan Shorin ryu kata. Kishaba-juku that is a break away from Matsubayashi Shorin ryu has a similar technique,
@mccarthysensei Ah so. :) I just saw where you said it looks like I "lost the colour" 2 years ago, and thought maybe you knew of a colour copy of it. Thanks.
This is awesome. I got to learn this kata, but my Sensei called it Aragaki Kurotori (
sp) Sochin. Does anyone know if there's a difference?
