Elliott hated comparisons. And comparing him to Nick Drake and Kurt Cobain is like comparing James Dean, Albert Camus, and Princess Diana because they died in car crashes.
The next person who compares Kurt Cobain to Elliott Smith is getting stabbed.Cobain could barely play guitar, and had a terrible voice. The one thing you could say about him is he was a good song writer.
Elliott on the other hand, a master of guitar, and even better on piano. He played drums on half his albums! Voice like an angel, and lyrics that can touch you in ways you didnt know words could.
Comparing Cobain to Smith is like comparing 5 o' clock vodka to Johnny Walker black.
@thegoddamnyeti the difference between to the two? cobain captured the zeitgeist, (manufactured or not) and elliott missed the crest of the wave. what kinda alternate reality would we be in if elliott had hit that wave?
Oh shut up. They both make a subjective form of art. To call one better because of what you perceive as musical talent is just silly. Kurt Cobain is Kurt Cobain. Elliot Smith is Elliot Smith. That's all there is, two beautiful people who we are damn lucky to have work from.
@ashybear123456789 No, that's not what I mean.... I don't mean he sounds like Kurt... I mean in terms of his social influence on the indie rock scene he is comparable to Cobain's influence on the grunge rock scene.
@ashybear123456789 Indie rock isn't about a "sound" its about a philosophy of not selling music CDs and MP3s as a commodity and only selling music if its in the form of tickets to a live performance.
it's basically a guy, saying listen, you wanna know something about relationships? it's like a moon, a burnt out world you know staying up all night
it's like he shoves this scathing image in your face but he does it in this tender beautiful way, so it's like not really shoving a scathing image in your face anymore
@dvzqz87 'and for all you know, you're the only one who finds it strange when they call it a lover's moon, a satellite...cuz it acts just like lovers do, the satellite"
I think that sums it up. But what you said in that second paragraph is great. It's like he had a totally unique way of conveying emotion

I just love that line. I'm sure a lot of people say this, but I, too, can personally identify with it.

Probably the saddest song Elliott Smith ever wrote, in my opinion.

some of the songs off of this album are pretty tricky to play on guitar. I like how Elliott put forth a lot of effort in his music.
