I couldn't agree more. But, trying to explain such things to new riders hell bent of size has become a tiring uphill battle that never ever ends. Nobody could ever imagine themselves on a under 400cc bike what so ever. It's amazing how narrow minded and tiny dick attitude can get in the way of better judgment. Sure a 1000cc four or 1600cc twin can be a great penis extension, but my knee puck on asphalt at 80mph on a bike that weighs as much as me, is amazing. Fuck this, I'm going riding.
would this bike make an ok bike for a first timer, i got on offer on an 82 for $1000 and im not sure it is a good start out bike what do you guys think?
The tires are affordable, the power is friendly but abundant, gobs of low end grunt. It sure ain't a ninja 250! I would highly recommend it. A friend bought this one in the video for a first street bike and loved it. I have a few acquaintances that ride XJ750's, seca's and maxims, as first bikes. They said once you get used to the way the bike feels heavy, your golden and could ride anything with handlebars. ;)
$1,000 is about what I got mine for too. Be careful, but, go for it.
And after using my yamaha 750 for a bit. It's safe to say that this bike is probably just as reliable as the CB750 mechanical wise. The only thing yamahas really suffered in the 80's where electrical problems (mines rewired but might have to be rewired again).
And now i have three things that need to be done.
1.) I need a new front tire
2.) Carbs need to be synced
3.) Need to find a new aftermarket gas cap due to bad cap gasket which doesn't seal.
hahah I have the same bike as this one. It has the circular headlight and gauges instead of square. Just blew the front tire yesterday but remarkably it easily held up! getting a new one tomorrow due in part that the other tire is just plain OLD and deteriorated.
I'm a first time owner. picked up a '82 xj750 and i love it so far but it's a fixer upper. i need a instrument cluster. anyone know of any good places to find parts for these bikes other than EBAY?
@hellnosucka There is a website called XJBikes.com. It's an online community all for XJ and XS owners/riders/fans. Join up and on the forums you'll find all sorts of owners projects and just all around talk about these fantastic bikes. Most importantly, there is an actual store where the guy has all sorts of parts to keep your dear XJ going. Many members are also rebuilding these old girls with modern parts and selling off the old ones for good prices. Take a look.
Always loved riding my seca 750. Didn't matter the weather. A set of bibbers, heavy boods and snowmobile gloves and I was warm enough aside from the tip of my chin. Thanks for the ride!
@martinaxman Sounds like riding year round in Wisconsin. :)
Glad the video was good. I have another reload of it as just the sound of the bike. I've been interested in a Seca for some time now but with the collection where it's at, I may have to sell a few of 'em and just follow the dream. ;)
@toctuning - CT isn't much better. I rode year round except when the tires wouldn't stick. Autumn mornings out at 7am with my tank bag packed and wouldn't come home till dark. Loved that bike. They stole it in the third year with 26000 miles on it. Still looked and ran new. I replaced it several years later with an FJ1200, but it wasn't the same. Only thing I would have changed was swap out the 750 with the Seca 900 motor. I'm guessing they'd fit, but who knows. Loved that shaft drive.
my 750 seca tops out around 130, and takes a long while to get there from 120. Maxims are geared similarly, but if it's a 6speed (which some are, i believe) your top end might theoretically be a bit higher.
@switch263 - I know this is old, but I've pushed past 145 on mine. My buddy clocked me on his 650 turbo coming back from Lake Placid one night. A bit sloshed. lol. Again on the LIE. Again a little tipped. lol. Never had a problem pulling Gs or pushing it to the redline. I also maintained it perfectly and did all the tuning myself. Could have been the Yamaha fork ferring. It did save me a lot of wind work.
Awesome! Your words inspire me and make me sad I no longer have my XJ750. Purely words that a true motorcyclist could formulate out of pure passion, martinaxman. Beutiful!
For sure, yesterday my brother was chasing my road legal track bike on the street and the camera didn't record any of it. I'm glad that this video made it though. I don't really talk much about my riding, but, lately I feel it's something to share with the world. Faster stuff will follow, better action, better riding all together. This was just the first ride of the season! It only gets better from here.
dohc I4 20 valves and 4 carbs wouldnt recomend it for a first bike. get a air cooled 2 cyl

120 is all i get with an 82 750 maxim

Mine tank slappered at 80mph, not sure what really caused it as I sold the bike a year ago, but, they are screamers for a metric cruiser.
120 is flying though man, did you have the factory bars on it doing that speed?

I've been looking into a way to mount my digital camcorder on my 81 seca, nice video.
