A 500 year old redwood: conversion into marketable commodities(furniture, paper, lumber, matchsticks, musical instruments, etc.) is inappropriate use of the tree
Conversion of a living human embryo into marketable commodities(mature infant heart cells, pancreatic cells, nerve and skin cells) is inappropriate use of the human
After one year of federal funding there have been no breakthroughs. My prediction: they'll be determined to be developing humans. A corporation may try to convince the politicians that more embryos are needed, leading to yet more ethical dilemmas.
Harnessing the power of the human embryo? It's the act of harnessing that is in question. We are all for cures. Harnessing of one group of living humans by another group achieved by the abusing group viewing the abused group as "less human" reeks of slave-owners' attitudes 150-300 years ago and the nazis in Germany 70 years ago. No corporation should own any human at any phase of their life cycle.
.........and spareness, availability, and impending destruction makes no human any less human. Even the inmate on death row has the right not to have his organs harvested for research or for the conversion of his living parts into marketable commodities.
@Mulcebar Your argument is short-sighted. The crux of embryonic stem cell research is to grow groups of mature cells derived from embryos by keeping them alive, not as a whole, but as separate pieces. So the so called "stem cell line" at 9 months is actually groups of alive infant cells: brain, heart, pancreatic islet, etc.......
@oran6es I strongly believe that this particular research needs to be fully understood as soon as possible because it WILL be the answer to some of the biggest medical problems we have ever faced. It seems to me that this is a vitally important step in our understanding and one day we will look back on these years and wonder why we didnt think of it sooner.
@Mulcebar .........and with 400k or so "spare" embryos and 24 MILLION diabetics(one disease), what are you going to do when the spares run out? Will your female family members undergo an invasive procedure to donate more eggs? Who'll decide on rationing the available cells? Cannibalizing the youngest of our species is not a medical advancement.
This commercial is full of misleading error. There are no restrictions against ADULT stem cell research which is the research that is providing actual cures. ADULT ASC has in fact produced over 70 treatments. This commercial is about EMBRYONIC research which is obsolete. Dr. Shinya Yamanaka has made adult cells to be pluripotent. The people behind these commercials are scam artists. Emotional political scam artists.
Proof that they are scam artists is that they lump all stem cell research together. ESC and ASC are not the same thing.
Adult Stem Cell= 70+ cures
Embryonic research= ZERO
ASC is fully legal and ethical
ESC is immoral and should never be legal
Why does the ESC movement feel the need to blur the issue? Because they want to leach off of the success of ASC. Not all Stem Cell Research is the same. Smart people know that ASC is the only successful, moral research.
Embryonic stem cell research "COULD" save lives but it hasn't done anything. Adult stem cell research has shown promising results. Embryonic has shown nothing. Walsh voted against federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Private funding is unaffected. This is an extremely misleading ad, no surprise.
Are we to take away funding from something that has possibly the greatest potential for human survival on a whim? How much money has been thrown at adult stem cell research? How much has been restricted from embryonic? Make it a level playing field and then make your claims. Allow for equal time for the research to develop, then compare and contrast.
Private funding has nothing to do with the fact that embryonic stem research is ILLEGAL in some states. Hardly a level playing field.
Hey dipshit, we wouldn't have discovered adult stem cell without first using embryonic stem cells. If we use all possible research types we might discover more avenues for research.
ahhh ,such a cute girl. Support Stem Cell Research bitches!

"In 20 years I'll have Alzheimer's....." so this 40 yo will be 60.
Well, in 20 years the embryo you pulled apart could have been a 19 year old, and based on the research so far you'd still have Alzheimer's.
oran6es 2 years ago
I'm a doctor and James Walsh was RIGHT. Those embryos that you pulled apart for unsuccessful research 3 years ago could have been 2 year olds by now.
We're all for cures. Some of us care about ethics and support REAL research.
Have a healthy life, don't drive drunk, and peace on earth.
