Why does the Mario theme get first place, you ask? Can you think of a more universally recognized piece of video game music (save perhaps that one Tetris song, which technically is a Russian folk song anyway)? That game, particularly through that song, revolutionized the importance of a strong soundtrack in video games and also broadened the horizons for future video game composers to seek out strong composition over cheap, hardly engaging chiptunes. That is why it gets first place.

I'm not saying that Mario has one of the best themes of any game of that era. I would be lying, as there are numerous other games whose scores I enjoy much more thoroughly. What I AM saying is that the theme from Super Mario Bros. was so innovative and groundbreaking for its time that video game music likely wouldn't be what it is today (nor would much of the other NES music that we enjoy more) without it. And that is precisely why it deserves top spot. Did I explain myself better there?

Good selection, but after seeing a bunch of these top NES music stints..seems SMB and Zelda are always near the top. The music is OK, SMB stays the same except at the castle levels. I think bias comes into play because those 2 games are better than the others. Capcom always has a great midi melody as in most Megamans, was very happy to see props to Bionic Commando as well. Jackal music did kick ass, along with Blaster Master.

Both this and the other list are neat. For me, I'd have placed Batman higher on both, and NG Act 5 (-3?) is the one I dig. Lotta folk making other good mentions, I'll toss in music from Gremlins, Marble Madness (you know the one), and Rush'n Attack myself.

Mario & Zelda as top 2 are kinda cop-outs to me. They're great cuz they're catchy, classic, and even our grandparents recognize 'em, but it's like placing a tasty burger over a perfect sirloin steak. I think they're more top 10 material.
