HEY! i just find the way to reduce the terrible sound! The key is to make hard drive a little bit slower with appropriate software, link: withopf.com/tools/aam/
thats the data accessing noise. get a silent hard drive. mine makes such a little noise i cnt hear it. only when i open the computer and put my ear to it. western digital! is the best silent ones out there. i mean but seriously whats so bad about this noise.
the closest thing to a whistle sound i heard was the hdd spinning up, and as many on this page have mentioned, thats normal. i hear nothing abnormal about that drive,
The audio on my ccompac laptop makes strange LOUD noises sometimes. Its coming from the speakers and its freaking me out a bit. Is anyone having this prob? plz plz reply....It really acts up when I raise and lower the volume.
I think you're only hearing the sound of the platters spinning. This sound is normal - but as FerralVideo said, if it starts to become much louder than normal, you might want to replace the drive.
Even if your drive is working normally, you should still back up your data on a regular basis. (Myself, I back up my files every week.)
If any strange noise u hear like scraching or clicking is a lot louder than normal hard drive sounds. When u hear it clearly outside of your case, its about to fail. My hdd failed when i heard scraching always when i started up my computer. I suggest u backup critical data. Because i didnt :/
Well, mine makes the sound too but a little bit more quiet, what is it?
It sounds like "bifififififififififififififi" and it is not loud, it is quiet but it worries me, that sound was not there when the computer was new.......
Spindle motor bearings. You have plenty of life left in this drive, especially if you have to dismantle the computer to let us hear it. Although if it gets bad, start backing up your data.
TheGreatAndyChow: Actually there ARE moving parts inside a hard drive. Just type hard disk platters or hard disk read/write head into a search engine.
Hey Dumb Dumb, there aren't any moving parts in a solid state hard drive. No platters or heads, just chips and transistors. Now a regular hard drive obviously has moving parts, because an important factor in performance is disk speed, usually 5400, 7200, 10000 or 15000 rpm. But those are not solid state drives.
yea i got that hardrive whistling sound when i ran STALKER wtf? also mine are Caviar Blacks.
0xXSilentSandsXx0 1 month ago
Well, unfortunately it's normal. I bought two WD Caviar Blacks and compared to my other Green(s) it sounds like thunder. Just the build of the drive.

@blackybgg Why adjust the acoustics level at the cost of performance. Speed > Silence.
