  • yea i got that hardrive whistling sound when i ran STALKER wtf? also mine are Caviar Blacks.

  • Well, unfortunately it's normal. I bought two WD Caviar Blacks and compared to my other Green(s) it sounds like thunder. Just the build of the drive.

  • What brand of Hard Drive is that?

  • My Hard drive sounds like that its so annoying

  • well you're running windows so it's likely to crash anyway so a backup would be wise

  • HEY! i just find the way to reduce the terrible sound! The key is to make hard drive a little bit slower with appropriate software, link: withopf.com/tools/aam/

  • @blackybgg Why adjust the acoustics level at the cost of performance. Speed > Silence.

  • Comment removed

  • I just bought wd caviar black wd1002faex 1TB, and it sounds like hell, can`t believe they still make so loud hard drives :(((

  • just defrag ur drive

  • If you have to ask you should already be backing it up!

  • system is booting normally,is not crashed.

  • @vitekcom2 - No one asked if it was crashed.

  • thats the data accessing noise. get a silent hard drive. mine makes such a little noise i cnt hear it. only when i open the computer and put my ear to it. western digital! is the best silent ones out there. i mean but seriously whats so bad about this noise.

  • you got WD HDD? it's normal. my seeking noises are similar

  • nothing wrong with it. It's fine.

  • the closest thing to a whistle sound i heard was the hdd spinning up, and as many on this page have mentioned, thats normal. i hear nothing abnormal about that drive,

  • omg..... its only the arm thats reading the disk.. dont shit urself

  • thats normal for old hard drives

  • This sound is very annoying due to high frequency tone !

  • My WD Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS started generating the same "whistle" sound from the first use. It is annoying.

  • i hate those computers, i think i have formatted over 200 over them !

  • when it makes the "click of death" you will know, trust me, my computer desk wobbled left and right ~2 cm when it happened, haha

  • well obviously, your computer has a geiger counter and its saying your radioactive :D

  • Its completely normal, especially on older computers. HDD faliures are clicknig poping, and the like every 3 seconds.

  • @ajwgeek So if there's a little bit of noise and then long periods of nothing that's not a big deal?

  • @MikuMikuBeat yea, I have 2 older computers that do that all the time. I am not sure about newer ones, I use mainly my ssd now...

  • you should always back up your data

  • thats just the hard drive workin'!

  • That's normal, don't worry about it

  • The audio on my ccompac laptop makes strange LOUD noises sometimes. Its coming from the speakers and its freaking me out a bit. Is anyone having this prob? plz plz reply....It really acts up when I raise and lower the volume.

  • i have a computer simular to this one and it makes that same sound..but its the loud Western digital hard drive! nothing to worry about :D

  • Your pc is old man time for upgrade

  • mines 578 rpms :( it really old but is not failinng it wired

  • Is that Western Digital Caviar drive? And I like you Compaq EVO!

  • I think you're only hearing the sound of the platters spinning. This sound is normal - but as FerralVideo said, if it starts to become much louder than normal, you might want to replace the drive.

Even if your drive is working normally, you should still back up your data on a regular basis. (Myself, I back up my files every week.)

  • thats noting i have a hard drive that is doing clicks like a gun fire

  • Oh... Those stupid EVO models....

  • If any strange noise u hear like scraching or clicking is a lot louder than normal hard drive sounds. When u hear it clearly outside of your case, its about to fail. My hdd failed when i heard scraching always when i started up my computer. I suggest u backup critical data. Because i didnt :/

  • Well, mine makes the sound too but a little bit more quiet, what is it?

It sounds like "bifififififififififififififi" and it is not loud, it is quiet but it worries me, that sound was not there when the computer was new.......

    Anyone knows about this?

  • Errrr....... No. I reccomend backing it up though.

  • lol my school computers are 100% like that and there like 2-3 years old and thave always have that sound so don't worry!!

  • BACK UP NOW OR ELSE

  • You should back your data up anyway!

  • Spindle motor bearings. You have plenty of life left in this drive, especially if you have to dismantle the computer to let us hear it. Although if it gets bad, start backing up your data.

  • Your hard drive is alright for the moment (it's just old), but you should back up your data frequently and watch for other weird noises.

  • yeah we have and old pentium 3 that makes that noise my pc in my room doesnt but the older ones do that

  • very good idea

  • its fine all old hard drives do that, and if i'm wrong you might as well back it up just in case

  • pentium 4 :]

go to the my space when you have that :)

  • Just an old drive. I have a drive that sound very similar to that. Nothing to worry about.

  • all old hard drives are loud your are good just old :p

  • that is just the processor

  • Right, solid state hardware with no moving pieces often make noises. You're very knowledgeable.

  • TheGreatAndyChow: Actually there ARE moving parts inside a hard drive. Just type hard disk platters or hard disk read/write head into a search engine.

  • Hey Dumb Dumb, there aren't any moving parts in a solid state hard drive. No platters or heads, just chips and transistors. Now a regular hard drive obviously has moving parts, because an important factor in performance is disk speed, usually 5400, 7200, 10000 or 15000 rpm. But those are not solid state drives.

  • TheGreatAndyChow: I always thought regular hard drives were solid state. But I guess you learn something new every day.

  • @liquidoxygen0 LOL not in an SSD you tard.

  • YaDunn0: Look, at the time of writing that comment I wasn't quite sure what a solid state drive was. I'm not so rusty on this now.

  • My HDD makes the same noise, it is so annoying but I don't think anything is wrong with it.

  • but the speakers are crap.

  • no it always makes those noises.

  • Why? it is so fucking loud and annoying.

  • it seems that ur memory stick has exeled the ports but u can sort that by steadily functioning the hard drive and sterolising the bandwidth

  • What the hell does that mean??

  • yea i have a 60 GB maxtor that does the same thing its probably just the motor

  • Sounds fine to me, but make a backup of all your files that you want to be safe.

  • Completely normal. I have a 2.5 inch toshiba laptop drive which is one noisy SOB, but it still works.

When in doubt, use HD sentinel to check your drive status

  • start saving you shit man cause mine did that and i lost all my shit.. burn all you important shit as data

  • I have a 60GB Samsung drive that does that but it still works good!

  • my HDD from my laptop makes the same noise and it drives me crazy

  • That is normal to hear. It is actually the hard disk drive's spindle motor and bearing assembly spinning.

  • r these any gud? ok i wana learn the insides of a pc & these are quite cheap at the mo, they ok 2 mess about with?

  • go to a yard sale and buy an old PC for 10 dollars if you wanna go poking around :)

  • normal sounds with that hdd , and no issues with the start up either

  • its fine my dad has one just like and it does the same thing 160 gig hardrive. its fine though

  • If the drive is old, it'll die in a year or two. western digitals have a kind to do that if that is one.

  • I can hear some old computers at school does that

  • that's normal. some computers do that.

  • @Nicholasc99 Its normal, my HP did the same thing.

  • hmmm i got the same misterious noise but i dont hink its gonna crash i dont know anoyone else have experienxced this?
