  • is this set in Nazi Germany or west germany after the war?

  • Academy award nominee: Lord Voldemort

  • I like the movie, and the student's comment about punishing some while everyone knew

  • This is a fantastic, beautiful, moving, emotional, and bold movie. The acting and writing are SUPERB. I don't know if it's for everyone, but I fucking loved it to pieces, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

  • Wonderful movie! Just one question: does the trailer contain scenes the actual movie doesn't?! I've just finished whatching it in streaming and there are a few scenes i've never seen like 0:56 and 1:44!

  • great film

  • powerful and deep. great movie

  • Lord Voldemort what are you doing here?

  • one of my fav. films ever!!! Kate Winslet was amazing in this film as was Ralph Finnes

  • I can't believe I haven't seen this film. I gotta see it

  • Voldemort Nyeaaah !! lol

  • Does anyone know the music used???

  • @SuperMarvelgirl think its the artist Ludovico Einaudi, but not sure witch song :)

  • @Tkdlolboy91

I think it's Divenire or Primavera

  • @Tkdlolboy91 Its Primavera :) Such a good song

  • @Tkdlolboy91 Hey i finally found it. its Primavera. thanks :)

  • @SuperMarvelgirl Just happy to help ;D

  • How the hell did this get so many nominations? And Kate getting a Golden Globe, and I think she won the Oscar for this too. This movie has a lot of gross naked scenes in it. Like when the boy is standing up in the tub and she's scrubbing him down, why'd we need to see that? And why doesn't Ralph's character just admit she doesn't know how to read and spare her having to go to prison?

  • @haleyteddy03

    >And why doesn't Ralph's character just admit she doesn't know how to read and spare her having to go to prison?

Because then there'd be no story, Dummerwitz!

  • @haleyteddy03 the overuse of nudity serves to enlighten it. If you see sexuality as a normal thing, you take the pressure out of it, you don't really think about it anymore during the movie. If they didnt, there d sexual tension throughout the movie.

The non sparing of prison, imo, is to show how ralph char loves hanna in every way. Even in her desires and principles. If she did not want to admit her illiteracy, he would stand by her, and support her decision, even if it cost prison.

  • @haleyteddy03 also, about the oscar, if you compare the usual nominees and winners, you can se this movie is oscar material. It's powerful and intense, emotion driven, with a powerful script and very soul touching. It's not the most brilliant story or most impressive visually, but it really got to me.

  • You guys really shouldn't say who dies. Don't even wanna watch it now. :/

  • Do you think David Kross is a good actor? I'm not sure...I would like to hear your opinion

  • ralph fiennes is amaizing!HOW WRONG COULD YOU BE?:D

  • i really like Kate... since TITANIC... shes great actress...

  • amazing book and amazing film

  • I have seen this film and it's amazing, kate winslet's accent is amazing too, her acting and dancing shes my favourite acctress, Ralp Fiennes is a good actor too

  • I have seen this film and it's amazing, kate winslet's accent is amazing too, her acting and dancing shes my favourite acctress, David cross and Ralp Fiennes are good actors too

  • lol. german accent :D

  • So was she like a crazy person?

  • @TheVictorb2696

Kate Winslet's character was not a crazy person per se. She was a Nazi SS guard at Auschwitz, and for reasons unknown, was also illiterate, and the film breaks down the moral conflict of her effect on her lover, who, like us, cannot easily comprehend how someone like her can function and survive.

  • I have just finished reading the book and it's awesome :)

and the movie looks pretty good too :)

  • VOLDEMORT! EVERYBODY RUN!

  • So Kate can do an English accent, American accent, German accent, sing, dance, act ..... what CAN'T she do ?

  • @Cabess12 she can't show any lack of talent ;) god i love her!

  • such a simple idea created such an amazing story. tragic, really makes you think for a long time afterwards.

  • David Kross <3

  • Avada Kedavra

  • DEPRESSING MOVIE!

    Really Great movie!

  • @naizo10 really? but has anyone noticed that Hanna Schmidt is technically a pedophile, according to our age of consent standards? She is 36 years old and she has sex with a boy that can be her son. The boy is 15 years old. Yet nobody is so upset by this. But Lolita, whose action takes place in the same period as part 1 of The Reader, has always been frown upon by many for its theme, an adult-teen affair and the book was forbidden in U.S.A for many years. Pretty weird attitude.

  • Never thought that illiteracy was something to be ashamed of in the NAZI times......has just seen this film for the nth and I never got fed up with it and Im planning never to.

  • I DIED INSIDE WHILE WATCHING THIS!

  • i love this movie

  • I met David Kross five years ago.. Now he's playing with Kate Winslet... OH MY GOD I am so proud of him as a 20 year old german.... =D

  • Kate Winslett is the best ! :D

  • @abers109 of course she is!

  • I know the second song is "Primavera", but what about the song that starts at :10 and goes until :48. Does anyone know what the first song of the trailer is??

  • Ralph Fiennes is amazing in this movie!

  • Der untergang reunited ;P

  • loved this movie!!!!! kate winslet is amazing. and david kross<3.

  • david kross <3

  • fake and gay

  • oh god the book was fucking awesome! i did not imagine young michael to look like this though lol

  • Im reading the book, n its really good

  • did you know that the man (Ralph Fiennes) is the actor of Voldemort (HOLY COW)??

  • @id5forever lol i notice every english movie has an HP actor or actress

  • @faboul467 haha thats true! i think its because the hp movies have the best English actor/actresses alive!!!

  • @id5forever U should say the dark lord lol !!!

  • @TahaAthar OH NO!! Now I'm truly getting the AVRA KADAVRA!! lol

  • @id5forever who cares he's in Schindlers List :D

  • Comment removed

  • @purplesmurf85 He didn't play Oscar Schindler he played Amon Goethe!

  • @bellea92 So sorry, I havn't seen the movie in a fair few years ... not everyone has a perfect memory.

  • @purplesmurf85 :D that's ok. Totally understand.

  • Wait i dont understand? Kates character was, killing women?..

  • @joellynmorgan no she was an Nazi. this story took palce 13 years after the holocaust.

  • @NatRougeProductions oooh okay thanks! im gonna havre to watch it.

  • Oh God, Lord Voldemort...

  • Isn't that old man the actor from the untergang?

  • who is that actor at 1:32

  • @NatRougeProductions Volker Bruch

  • @xandra14 HOLY CRAP thank u...i could kiss u right now...but..nah. XD

  • this movie was STUNNING. a lot of times trailers don't do films justice, but watching this trailer just now gave me chills remembering watching the movie.

  • prince peter

  • winslet is a genious actress.

  • best movie ever made

  • David Kross was wonderful we cannot forget to say that, so young and done much good too. 17 years old and already wonderful in this filme, continue so David !

  • Simply, amazing..

  • Kate Winslet is amazing

  • @anitatcm i agree. one of the best actresses in the world. :-)

  • @lollefromDK

    Definitely =)

  • just saw this on tv. Very intense sad tragic movie, very good acting by kate.

  • @robbielg oooooooo what tv station??

  • David Kross :)

  • I thought it was a good story, although I kept waiting for some sort of pivitol moment or twist that just never came. Its just a drama really. It was very good but for me, missed that certain something.

  • MASTERPIECE !!!

  • Why did Einaudi not write the whole score? :/

Would people recommend I read the book or watch the film first?

  • @ThisIsAnthonyJames92 I read this book in German first and then in English. I would recommend reading the book first. It gives a very different take on the Holocaust from what I was used to because I am American. Overall I thought it was a very powerful story.

  • The reader, I haven't seen the reader, I was at the theatre but there was a line, of everybody watching Iron Man for the 2nd time.

    Thats a great song.

  • Comment removed

  • @Sn0okkz Maybe you should listen to the song one more time then so you dont misquote it..

  • Tey give WAY too much credit to Ralph Finnes... David Kross should get a big part of the credit! He was 17 when he acted in this movie, he is awesome.

    This movie is great.

  • Oh man, the importance of reading and writing...

  • Song for the trailer?

Who does it and the title? Please and thank you!

  • This movie belongs to the very few that did not disappoint me after reading the book. That is really rare. I'm glad that the film turned out to be so good since the reader is one of my favourite books.

  • Such a beautiful and sad movie...

  • An excellent film and a solid accomplishment in modern filmmaking. Kate Winslet's acting was phenomenal and I think it's one of her greatest roles. A must see and one of the best films of 2008.

  • I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm halfway through the book, and the only thing I don't like is the boy who was chosen to play Michael. They could have gotten someone cuter...maybe the oldest of the siblings from Chronicles of Narnia? I have a feeling that I'll like them as a couple with his face.

  • @PillowFightNight The movie is really good. I just watched it tonight. What is the name/author of the book?????????

  • @Sweetdreamer924 The name of the author is Bernhard Schlink. I'm sure it's a great movie, can't wait to watch Kate Winslet's acting!!! But the book is EXTREMELY good too!!!!!!!

  • i love this movie, great story...so damn good.

  • very dull film. i found nothing i liked in this film.

  • kate figures so well with this character. The kate winslet body isnt skinny or delicate, looks kind the opposite, and her posture also, her face and her mouth give her the same look, i mean, it is perfect for this paper! She even cant read, dont learned to. Kate was perfect *_*

  • this is a really good movie, its not for the history that is impressive, its for all around it-- the actors, the soundtrack, photography, and the argument, and the way of film or show. Kate winslet wan for the very first time her Oscar in here i guess! She always have been nomeated for it but never win till this. And in revolutionary road she was very good as well.

  • Ludovico Einaudi <3 Primavera

  • I have a question for the native americans/English. How well is the english of the actors? Some of them are german and so am I, so I can't tell what kind of job they're doing.

  • ooooh voldemort is a PLAYAAAAA

  • i just bought the book! is it good?

  • I love the movie and the book!

  • such good acting

  • i dont understand...what was kate accused of?

  • @natsnutsxoxo i think she was a nazzi, i think.

  • @PivotStalker It's 'nazi'. With one 'z'.

  • @natsnutsxoxo

she was an ex-SS actually (not a nazi, you have to make the difference !) and was forced to be one of the keepers in Auschwitz so she kind of participated to the jews women murderers.

  • this movie is awesome

  • the movie also touched the importance of education. . .

  • one of unforgettable movies i've ever seen. .

the love story is very rare - - - falling in love twice as your age. A may-december love affair. This also proves love has no boundaries.

  • really good movie. very intense

  • that movie was briliant. the performances, the script, the story. i loved it.

Can anyone tell me the name of the song?

  • Primavera by Ludovico Einaudi

  • @wiolska thank you

  • Primavera by Ludovico Einaudi

  • Oh My... kate winslet is technically way older compared to the lead male actor but she had a young look in the movie. Good for her ;)

  • Love the fact they used Ludovico Einaudi as the music :)

  • Comment removed

  • @incrowdcynic Well, it isn't the same theme, but the motif at the beginning is the same.

  • @ToraXaolin I agree :D

  • @ToraXaolin which song of his?

  • @padfootpak It's "Primavera"

  • @ToraXaolin Washington politicians say they didn't bother reading the mustang slaughter rider because it was part of a 4,000-page bill. Maybe they are just illiterate. But now one of the mustang killers is comatose, shot in the head in Arizona, home of fellow mustang-killer John McCain. After he and his fellow too-busy-to-read congress illiterates watch this movie, I hope John McCain watches No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood. Both won Oscars. Wolf-killer Sarah Palin--you watch too.

  • I LOVE the Dark Knight. what do you mean this movie "snubbed out the Dark Knight"?

  • @dragonblade117

This took Dark Knight spot for best picture

on the account the oscars hate superheroes

  • ooh I see. I actually feel that The Dark Knight got snubbed by "Slumdog Millionaire". The Dark Knight shouldn't have just been nominated; it should have WON. That, I can agree with you on. And I am VERY disappointed that it didn't even get nominated. That is shaming one of the best movies of this decade.

  • this didn't win best picture

  • but the reader didnt snub out the dark knight. it didnt even win best picture, slumdog did. and this movie isnt boring

  • Winslet is so memorable here.

  • I think the movie is way better than the book! Im just saying! although it is still good . :)

  • Anybody know the name/artist of the 2nd song in the trailer? I really like it.

  • kate winslet is FREAKEN awesome!!!

    she's so beautiful

  • Voldemort, voldemort. Go go go

  • One of the man in this film is also in Harry Potter.. The dark lord.. Lord Voldemort. Muahahahahha!!!!

  • The sound on the movie is called..

    Ludovico Einaudi - Primavera.

  • i love this film and the history is incredible.. very good actors were chosen...

  • hey is that voldemort?

  • yes it is

  • lol, I almost thought it was Liam Neeson for a second!

  • lol he does look a little like him

  • OMG! Lord Voldemort is the main guy!!!! weird....

  • Beautiful performance from Kate in this moving film.

  • @bobgrantsbus

She's smart and very talented, perfect for old demanding roles. Silly vulgar actresses of our times should learn from her acting. I burst into laugh when I hear ignorant people calling "actresses" people like "Rose Mc Gowan".

  • Kate Winslet was perfect for this role.

Its actually written by a german author. So the book was originally written in German but was changed into english.

It really is a great novel to read.

I say read the book first before the novel.

  • @pinkpinkpink30 the book is amazing and i am kind of glad they have chosen Kate for the main act, but i'm pretty sure most of people had no idea of the book and it just kills the very essence of this film

  • i really loved this movie. it's one of the greats of Kate Winslet.

  • Perfect!!

  • This movie is so good!! I actually cried on this one....ima read the book now!!

  • This film is really amazing, gripping, so well acted, moving, unremetting and powerful. You cannot fail but be moved, driven to anger, even with yourself. I am not a huge fan of Kate but she gives a superlative performance here.

  • the name of the song?

  • primavera (ludovico eindaudi)

    it's great!!

  • Primavera by ludovico einaudi

  • OMFG I HAVE TO WATCH THIS not only coz it looks like a good film but like most europen movies that have to do with the second world war Bruno Ganz is in it! =) favorite European actor! you might recognize him for the great movie called Der Untergang here is a list of some of his fims

    The Kite Runner

    The Boys from Brazil

    The Manchurian Candidate

    Downfall (Der Untergang) (2005)

  • Did u know that Nicole Kidman was originally set to star in The Reader but due to her pregnancy she had to back out of the film.

  • Glad she did. She is box office poison and her face no longer moves. No bueno.

  • @geanjerity I agree! But Kate Winslet is awesome too.

  • I don't like her with botox and collagen lips. I liked the way she looked in Moulin Rouge! She looks scary now :/

  • Oh there is one more thing what can we learn from our experiencies-I have nooo idea.

  • This movie so much reminds me of an ass-hole(Ralph Finnes) and me.

Difference is I never forgave him after realizing my tragedy was a joke to him, and he thinks I m a joke. So in a way I feel like Jewish woman- one can t change past.

  • just finished watching this movie. it was one of the best movies i've seen. it is def. worth watchiing.
