  • Is that tulips mum????

  • There is a nice site with her albums annebyrne dot com

  • is that Tulisa's mum?

  • @TreijaMusic yes it is Tulisa's mother X

  • I *love* her voice. I'm having a hell of time finding recordings of hers though.

  • My father has one of her albums. It's a precious thing to have. Have a very difficult time finding any of hers or Gemma Hasson's.

  • She's a lovely singer. That might be the best redition of Croppy Boy ever. Thanks for posting

  • What a gift of a voice, and a beautiful lady too, I'll sing this tonight in tribute

  • My late Dad, who was an Irishman, used to sing this.

  • sounds like joan baez, looks a lot like her too!!

  • @TheLadyjazzy1 - She reminds me of Joan Baez too.

  • nice

  • Pour machree01: Où est passée la magnifique vidéo: "Lily Of The West" avec Anne and Jesse?

  • Here it is.

    /watch?v=lgBmvwyqaCI

Lily of the West by Anne Byrne and Jesse Owens.

  • Thank you for the link. Jesse and Anne are great together in this video.

  • What ever happened to the video "Lily Of The West" with Anne and Jesse?

  • Cheers" Anne, For reminding me who i am!...........xxxxxxx

  • I remember my granny singing this when I was a kid, the only time i ever saw her cry... thanks for posting...

  • To what does the "I chose the black, I chose the blue" refer?

  • This probably refers to the colours of some flag, as there is shortly after that a reference to the "green" which is the flag colour associated with Ireland

I chose the black and I chose the blue,

I forsook the pink and the orange too,

But I did forsake them and did them deny

And I'll wear the green, like a Croppy Boy.

  • Beaten "black and blue" in custody.

Red is for the English forces.

Orange is for King William of Orange (Dutch), still used in Northern Ireland as the Orange Order.

Green is of course the Irish national colour.

So he defied his captors, was tortured and sentenced to death, rather than betray his comrades, the other Croppy Boys.

  • "The Croppy Boy" Relates to the Hair Style Chosen by some of the 1798 United Irishmen.. Who cut their hair short to denote the were not of the "Whig" [Consertive] supporters... Bad idea as it left them open to be targeted...which they were arrested and tortured...and Hung...

  • "I choose the black, I choose the blue" seems to me like filler. I don't think it references anything in particular if just works for the song.

  • From where may he download Anne's songs ?

  • Hi Machree01! I still love Anne Byrne. Place more songs from Anne Byrne.

  • Where can you get this DVD? I am in U.S.A. so if you have an address to write to purchase it, please let me know.

Do you know what other artists are on this DVD? Are you in Ireland?

  • You can buy it on Amazon com and many other places!

  • Hi Enyrb:

I wonder why that video was taken off? I guess I could understand if it was some kind of offensive video but I don't know all the particulars about Youtube & why a video would be taken off.

Are there certain reasons why the person who posted it would remove it?

Do you own any Anne Byrne albums?

I do have some that I bought years ago when I was visiting Ireland. I don't think she was ever really ever a well known artist but I think she could have been more known with the right mgmt.

  • Is that the same,"Lily of the West" that Joan Baez sang on one of her early albums?

I did not know that Anne & Jesse sang it. Wish it was still available here.

  • Hello Machree01,

Can you please post more Anne Byrne songs?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Linda, I wish i had more, but i only have this one, and The Foggy Dew, it is very hard to get here Albums, sorry, thanks for the comment.

  • Wonderful to hear Ann singing again. This is just beautiful. Manys the time I sat watching her singing with her hauntingly beatuful voice. Some singers you just never forget.

  • Anyone know a song 'croppys who will not lie down'? i havent heard it in ages and cant find it anywhere!

  • There is a song just called "Croppies Lie Down", a Protestant song . . . it's referenced in "The Old Orange Flute". I'm not sure where you'd find it, sadly--haven't heard it myself in donkey's years.

  • Ive since found the 'Croppies who will not lie down' song on youtube thanks

  • The Connemara Cradle Song, sung by Jesse and Anne,it is on a album called "The Rafters Ring At The Abbbey Tavern" 1965-PYE NPL 18127 LP.

  • no this is a wexford song. theres a croppy boy grave in duncannon(south wexford) and thats where it relates to

  • I never thought I would see a video of Anne Byrne. So happy to see it! I have about 6albums by Anne Byrne, some with Jesse Owens & others just Anne. Being a hugh fan of Joan Baez I really loved Anne's voice as she not only did Irish songs but other ballads.

I was lucky to buy all of her albums in record shops in Ireland, one in England & others in the L.A. CA. area. I never really come across too many people that even know about Anne Byrne & glad to find others who are fans here on Youtube.

  • A beautiful voice. She is arguably the best female folk singer on record. It's a pity her recordings are so few and scarce.

  • From a proud Byrne in San Francisco: Anne Byrne has always sung the very best version of Croppy Boy. She has the voice that evokes the very heart and soul of Ireland, not only for those who live in our cherished homeland, but for those of the Diaspora abroad who love our fair Ireland.

  • Beautiful, beautiful! I remember Ann Byrne & Jesse Owens so well from seeing them in the early days of RTE(I was only 7-8, mind!)and its shame that they didn't go any further because they were so good together... but perhaps that was by choice?

  • Anne is my aunt. She is living in Dublin still and is very well. There is no reissue of CD versions of her albums for red tape reasons as far as I know, its a shame.

  • It's a disgrace that their not doing it, is she still singing away, i don't even have a cassette or record of Anne singing, i only have The Croopy Boy, and The Foggy Dew, She has a lovely voice, and i listen to them every so often, i am glad anne is doing well. Best wishes.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • She only sings for family and friends now, and when she does every heart stops! Her voice is even more exquisite in person. You can buy some albums sometimes on ebay. Even she has very few. I'll tell her you send her best wishes, Lisa

  • I hope you will record her yourself, just with whatever portable equipment you can muster. Such records will be great heirlooms for your family, if not artifacts for posterity itself. She really is a jewel among the aggragate of folk singers. Tell her she is not forgotten by this Yank!

  • Sorry. I was trying to reply to Lisaconmara but Youtube has other ideas...

  • verse 4

As I was mounted on the gallows high

    My aged father was standing by;

My aged father did me deny

And the name he gave me was the Croppy Boy.

  • verse 3

I chose the black, I chose the blue,

I forsook the red and the orange too,

I did forsake them and them deny

I chose the green, and for it i'll die

  • verse 2

It was early, early on Tuesday night,

The Yeomen cavalry gave me a fright,

To my misfortune and sad downfall

I was taken prisoner by Lord Cornwall.

  • verse 1

It was early, early on in the spring,

The small birds whistled and sweet did sing,

Changing their notes from tree to tree

And the song they sang was Ireland free.

  • She has the voice of an angel. Does anyone knows if they have released any of her songs on CD. Where is she living and is she still singing. I would love to see more of her singing on YouTube. She has the heart of a great Irishman.

  • I am envious of her voice. Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics she sings? I have found different ones but I'd like hers.

  • Une voix véritablement extraordinaire! Dommage qu'il n'y ait à ce jour que deux vidéos sur le site.

  • she is really beautiful..and her voice is just lovely.

  • Does anyone know what happened to her? I have her album I Chose the Green. It is one of my favorites and I can't find anything about her on the net.

  • Spendid version of a classic song...very moving.

  • This is a beautiful version of a great song. Thanks for it.

  • She looks and sings like an angel, I remember Anne singing this great song on RTE and that wasn`t yesterday.

  • This is my beautiful eldest sister whom I love very very much. When I was a teenager she was really good to me, buying me beatles albums and bringing unusual gifts from her travels and giving me pocket money. I am very proud of her beautiful voice. Maureen.

  • Thanks. Anne Byrne & Jesse Owens do wonderful duets. Do either sing nowadays. Irish TV (RTE TG4)featured them on "Come West along the Road"

  • the most perfect voice on the planet. FOr all time. mg

  • She is a lovely singer

  • That's my grandmother, isn't she great! - Ruadhan Roche

  • She is and was great. I saw her years ago in the Abbey Tavern. My cousin was Maeve Mulvanny and she was great too RIP

  • great story of a true irish rebel.well sung.

  • Anne Byrne GREAT Singer
