The dnepr is much better with a bit of weight in the sidecar. I also think that the dnepr 2wd is much better onroad than offroad. That's where it shines, I think. The handling is great.
@Dadabean : I own both of these rigs now. The Dnepr now has a leading link front-end which helped off-road handling quite a bit. It is very harsh off-road compared to the Ural though. On the pavement it is awesome!
@BavarianBomberWrench That's good to hear! Nice to be able to see the strengths and weaknesses of both designs firsthand. I have owned both an MT-16 and a 650 Tourist before. Right now, I am in the process of purchasing an MT-11 with leading-link and 3.89 rear-end. After seeing your off-road videos, I may want to purchase a 4.62 rear-end. Lots of National Forest roads to explore here in North Florida!
@Dadabean : If you are doing mostly off-road riding, yes, use the lower ratio rear drive unit. And sign up on Soviet Steeds forum if you haven't already.
@BavarianBomberWrench OMG number two. I'm proud of motorbike industry in my country. It's a pity, but in fact it is dead now. However, greetings from Ukraine!
UPDATE: I have run both of these rigs off-road quite a bit now. The Dnepr is much more rigid and rough off-road. The Ural is quite plush due to the rubber bushings @ swingarm, forks, etc. While the Dnepr now hooks up better w/ the clutch fixed (it used to slip due to improper assembly) the Ural is a smoother ride in rough terrain. The Ural is in the process of being re-engined w/ a 1000cc BMW engine. Should be on the road in September 2011 :)
The Dnepr also has knobby tires on the 2 drive wheels. Most of the Dnepr's problems were the shitty conventional forks that don't work well off-road. It now has a leading link fornt end and is a bit better off road. Thanks.
"My one-wheel drive Ural Tourist is leading Rich's Dnepr two-wheel drive rig through the woods of Goffstown & Weare, New Hampshire, U.S.A. in early 2009."
By the way, this light one is Ural, and his driver at 3:30 could use steering demper just by stiffing it.
see, with two drive wheels, you have to treat the mechanics of the dnepr more like you would a jeep.. and lets face it, only a moron would use a limited slip in a jeep (unless youre a soccer mom)... the dnepr, if its going to be 2wd has to have a locking differential, a solid axle, or none at all (1wd)
@BavarianBomberWrench looked OD to me.. must be the lightning.. im trying to decide to buy a ural, or a dnepr, the dnepr would save me about $6k, and i can add the upgrades i want and more from there with the remainder.. thats one thought im having right now
@BavarianBomberWrench well, you could blame a lot of the off-road issues on the limited slip differential... robbing torque, responsible for the rough side to side motions, the ural is smoother because its 1-wheel drive, all torque goes to the one and only drive-wheel, nothing to slip, nothing to steel torque... so with a dnepr, to make this handle a lot better i see one of two choices... a better, more improved offroad differential, or convert it to one-wheel drive
MrYaskov can correct me if I'm wrong but it is an R75 engine w/ R80 jugs and R75 heads. The thing is FAST! It just sucks off road :) The '95 Ural is bone stock besides the tires which are Continental GS tires. Feel free to subscribe as I'll be adding more video in the future. Thanks.
My mad riding skilz notwithstanding, the Ural is simply the better bike offroad even with 1WD. The Dnepr feels like it's towing an anchor through the woods except when it tries to roll over. We had an awesome time out there and my bike does now have a leading link front end. I felt like I'd been locked in a phone booth with a Doberman for about a week afterward.
This particular Dnepr uses a Limited Slip drive which alternates from one wheel to the other. This results in some pretty bizarre off-road handling as the rig gets thrown side to side. It is also odd when you "fly the chair" on the street as the sidecar wheel receives all the power while in the air. Another detrimental factor was the rock-solid conventional forks. We switched rigs and the Bnepr owner stated that my Ural "Rides like a Cadillac"!!! He has since installed a leading link front end.

yeah.. id rather have a dnepr, a little work from anyone that knows how to work on motorcycles and it can run circles around a ural

which bike got stuck in the mud? the ural, or the dnepr?... btw, i think the OD painted bike is much nicer looking
megadeth22885 1 year ago
@megadeth22885 The Dnepr is black. It got stuck. I pulled it out of the mud w/ my one wheel drive, desert tan colored Ural Tourist. Thanks

i wonder if this side-car can be removed and ridden as a standard motorcycle?
megadeth22885 1 year ago
@megadeth22885
Not without a LOT of work and it would be a pretty disappointing ride at that.
