  • The user experience is crap on this phone, -even the keyboard layout.

But the hardware is awesome. I've dropped this phone many times, and it has survived them all, I've even dropped it on concrete while riding my bike!. The only hardware that has broken is the button to lock up the screen, -but I fixed that with a screen lock app.

I'm going to miss the resistive screen when I buy lumia 800 (no more gloved phone handling). But I'm looking forward to superb hard- and software.

  • i had more than 10 nokia... n97 is my last one.. i'll take the new Iphone 5... sorry nokia...

  • Just put "N97 touchscreen problem" into any search engine and discover just how poorly built this phone is. It is the last Nokia I'll ever buy.

  • They should have offered a refund to everyone unfortunate enough to have bought the N97. After the inordinate amount I spent on this phone, and how terrible it is, I'll never buy nokia again

  • the exact same thing happen to other company as well a company called "apple" with their iphone 4 i read alot of news about iphone 4 issues they're also surprised that iphone 4 has so many problems...but the difference is that nokia admitted the issues of the product and apple don't...lol by the way are they gonna do a huge improvement in terms of performance for n97 at all ?they need to..otherwise it's kinda unfair for people who spent lots of money on this device that doesn't feel stable=)

  • is nokia n97 going to have simbian 3 software i did not understend the video!?

  • Hats off to Nokia for being honest & demonstrating integrity of highest standards. Its unheard of in Mobile Phones industry someone coming out & openly admitting mistakes. Improvements have to be seen, but the confidence of Nokia VP tells me that they guy is serious.

  • N97 is a turd. Worst phone i ever owned. Hangs every couple of week, then freezes to the point where i have to remove the battery and replace it.

Multiple soft and hard resets don't make a shred of difference.

I'll never buy a Nokia again.

F*CK you NOKIA. You've gotten fat and lazy. HTC will bury you.

  • @c3mky , i actually have the n97 v21 wich is great i have compare many times my phone to any manufacture, nokia is much better even than iphone. i phone has a terreble speakers that i can bairly hear them so poor. im just waiting for the launch of n87 12 megapexils. should be the bomb.

  • Wow! I cannot remember in the last 20 years a company coming that openly and admitting its mistakes! I do not (yet?) own N97, but have E66 and am very satisfied.

  • BUT NO APOLOGY.

  • Do someone knows if symbian v3 will be available for this useless device...

  • no , unfortunately..

  • i am surprised that sometimes a big company will admit that they did something wrong... at least we didn't got BS...

  • I feel swindled by Nokia

  • My N97 sucks, problems over problems. Not one day without minimum one restart. This was definitly my last phone from Nokia.

  • loool i want to tell u this is my last phone from nokia my next phone will be an iphone

  • @sox5404 It is my last phone from Nokia, even though I'd never buy into Steve Jobs' hyped creation (and I'm a Mac user of several decades). HTC is the only true innovator in this market.

  • Will the N97 be upgraded to Symbian^3, if not I want my money back because N97 software sucks

  • i wish i can return my phone

  • You'll never hear Steve Jobs say anything like this, even though the iPhone is quite glitchy and lacks many of the features that high-end Nokia phones have.

    Hats off to Nokia.

  • the iPhone experience is nothing like the N97experience because unlike the N97 It actually works.

  • @bronxboyXXX Yeah, it works, provided you hold it a certain way when making calls. Nokia and Apple are in the same league. Neither of them are anywhere near HTC in terms of quality or functionality.

  • @sullivan912 You won't get any argument from me. I love my HTC HD 2

  • I wanna buy a phone.

Should I go with N97 or a Nexus One ?

  • avoid the n97 dude choose between the iphone and the nexus if you need flash player alot go for the nexus if u like apps and games and stuff go for the iphone

  • Nexus, no reason to go for the N97, if u want a Nokia phone wait for the n98 (its coming in the summer/end of spring).. n98 will run symbian^3

  • Thanks Rafe, great interview. Good to hear such honesty from the man at the top, it gives me more confidence in the company. The moral to this story is: don't buy an immature product! Wait at least 12 months before buying any complex gadget so that most of the bugs have been sorted out.

  • Nice video Rafe, but the audio from the interviewers is quite low.

  • We weren't miced up - originally we were going to cut the interviewers / questions (keep flow), but left a few bits in to give a sense of what it was like. Wont be doing this so much in future videos. Thanks for feedback.

  • Standard,

Q/A for complex devices will grow as an issue. The need to ship early remains an economic imperative that drives the requirement to think quality in a very structured manner to mitigate chaos. Let's continue to enjoy the ride ;-)

  • I simply dont believe him. N900 being one glaring example it STILL requires software patching it doesnt even have MMS yet (native). Very very shoddy from Nokia.

  • @Chrispy7 N900 is well known as step four of five... so I think the missing element in that regard are more explained by this. i.e. it's almsot a test bed.

  • Its well known in the geek community but not to the end consumer which is rather a different matter. Your comment surely dosnt excuse the lack of functions which were promised by Nokia to have been added by now. The N900 and its consumers have been treated very poorly... just like the N97 and its happening right now.

  • @Chrispy7 I don't really buy into this argument to be honest. Are there specific function you think Nokia promised, but were not delievered? And while the N900 has recieved consumer attention in some countries (notably the UK), it has no where near the push that a tpyical high end Nokia device has... mainly been online driven.

But yes you can argue that Nokia could have better communicated N900 status.

  • what was this big software problem with the n97?? I have a 5800.

  • @zsolti256 Unstable software, memory out errors etc. Whether it impacted you depended on use cases.

The 5800 had a bit of this in the first few fiirmware, but was generally ok by v12 and certainly by v21 (and arguably less of an issue to begin with). Hence very little noise around 5800 compared to N97.

  • Hi Rafe, I'm guessing the version that fixes the N97 is V2x.xx. as v21 is already available. Any scheduled/expected date?

  • @RobertHallVidz The reference as to v20/v21, which does fix many of the issues. I imagine we will see another firmware for N97 fmaily though.

  • Wow! Congratulations to Mr. Vanjoki for having the balls to even allow such a relaxed media interview. I think this truly shows that the top brass at Nokia understands the "new media" and the power of the internet. I think he honestly believes in Nokia and his sincerity was apparent.

Very progressive and a positive experience.

  • Great that, nokia is working with normal people and not only in the lab with engineers. I personally love symbian and currently have a Sony Erricson phone. It's a robust simple phone with loads of features. I'm looking forward to symbian^3 and I'm looking for a new phone with meamo, android or symbian^3. My 2 year contract end in December this year so I hope that there will be some revolutionary phones with said operating systems.
