Why have a fire work factory in a built up area. If anything goes bang the whole area gets flattened. But if it was in the middle of nowhere it would only destroy the factory. Its a no brainer. Build the factory AWAY from other buildings... far far away..!!!

Most of the fireworks that blew up, consisted of black powder - basically the same type people used in the old days, as a propellant to bullets and cannonballs etc. or for blowing up things. Imagine about 2000 ton of that powder going up in flames at the same time, and all the gasses it released, which also contributed to the large volume of the explosions... Something like that simply HAS to wreck havoc!

That's exactly what they did, that's why over 2000 people in the vicinity didn't lose their lives. Evacuation was quick and effective, so "only" one fireman died, and some treated for minor injuries and/or smoke inhalation etc.
