That's how virtually all mechanics coaches tech people how to swing the ball. Some might tell players to turn there hips, but at the end of the day all there doing is swinging with their arms. Go to a high school game and see how little power most of the hitters have.
Not turning isn't even the problem here. Striding is sometimes a good thing to do, when you move your head, drop your hands, overstride, or lead with your back elbow(goes pretty much hand in hand with dropping your hands)
this will just make the batter lead with his back elbow, as if that isn't enough of a problem with young kids. They drop their hands anyway, and when stupid coaches like you don't fix that, and have them do this, it makes it worse. This drill is stupid with a good swing, and even worse with a bad one. These kids will drop their hands, and rush to the ball, with their back elbow near their belly button at contact point.
"This drill is not about mechanics, it focuses on getting the bat through the zone"
GOOD MECHANICS, GET THE BAT THROUGH THE ZONE THE MOST EFFICIENTLY. Throwing your hands at the ball, limits your circular hand path, without that, your batspeed and hand path will be terrible.
Great drill, keep up the good work this kid is on his way. Don't listen to none of the critical comments on here. These guys are looser. They have nothing better to do.
U need to give him tine to get his hands back in the proper position to get a good swing path. I understand the drill as I play baseball but this kid is moving too fast.
This drill will instill bad habits and poor mechanics. This is not the way to teach quick hands. PERFECT practice or nothing at all. If he does this during practice, he'll do it during a game. The bat should not even be moving an inch until the hips have rotated. There is ZERO leverage or power in this drill. He has to take advantage of the energy and momentum of the rotating torso then quick hands take the barrel to impact. See Coaches Mike Epstein or Joe Brockhoff for quality mechanics.
Loading is Ok, but the batter should be fully loaded already when the hips are starting. When the front heel drops the hips start. The bat isn't even in the equation at launch. If they start the bat swinging early they will bar their arms early and swing around the pitch, not through it. I just read my previous comment from 4 months ago. Its still spot on. Your name says batting cages so I'm certain your teaching what I'm saying but maybe my description is lost in translation a little.
well i agree with mostly everyone this drill can ruin your mechanics if you get used to swinging with out turning your hips toward the pitcher this kid wasnt moving his hips or back leg at all very wrong mechanics.
WTF? Hey! To the parents of this kid... I hope your not paying for this crap. Your better off buying Ted William's "THE SCIENCE OF HITTING" and maybe a video or two from Charly Lou, Cal Ripken, Mike Epstein, Don Slaught or you can just stay with this clown thats working with your son. If it's Dad, quit being a tight wad and pay for a real instructor. GOD! I can't believe the crap people put on youtube... Embarrassing
Run like hell from this!

Bad drill. You don't to get in to any bad habits with muscle memory. It'll mess up you're entire swing and timing.

It is a bad drill. But advocating the bat not moving at all until hips rotate isn't the greatest of ideas either.
