  • lol that use to the size of them 30 years ago! tell me the size of the fish caught 30 years ago wasnt twice or 3 times the size they catch today? gobal warning over fishing shows its tolls!

  • We caught loads of these giant fish on 1 trip off the irish coast up near rockall in the 80s.Turbot, sole, plaice, monkfish they were all HUGE.Never saw anything like them before or after. We fished till the boat could hold no more, a 90foot trawler and got paid a fortune that week.Would be the equivalant of maybe 4000 or 5000 euros today per man.We were fishing out of killybegs at the time.

  • Awesome pictures. Thanks for posting this.

  • the big boys are in the breeding grounds but that's steeling. I caught ones up to 10 ft long four guys to pul them in.

  • ostia pedazo de rodaballo en mi vida viera uno tan montruoso como ese qe pasada ojala pudiera algun dia alguno asi por cierto donde fue capturado.gracias

  • Just another fisherman killing his own future. All Halibut that size are female and they lay may eggs during their lives . Besides its the chickens that taste the best . In fact I am going to cook some tonight , Tight lines to all ! Just be mindful of what you keep .

  • Couple Dandys there, u guys tuna fish? when's your lobster season?

  • i cleaned a 380 lb one last year working in a NEWFOUNDLAND fish plant, he looked pretty close to the size of that one, u know the weight???

  • 295lb dressed I think

  • Pacific Halibut are just so much nicer looking...

  • Atlantic halibut fishermen are just so much nicer looking... lol

  • @LOBSPERT gotta agree there im a fishermen over here lol

  • sorry! it was on a rod

  • I think the biggest halibut was cought here in Norway, Lofoten. It weighed 204 kilo

  • We had some big ones too but the fish are a lot smaller now. We officially blame seals here but the management of our marine resources are run by petty thieves. lol

  • It was this summer, seals yeah, we dont like them too XD

  • i want to eat it

  • that some nice catch

  • Turns out the giant halibut were breeders. Ooops. Who knew?

  • That must go 200 dressed. Joe Goodick is the halibut king.

  • we had a halibut this trip that went 235 pounds how much does that one weight ...i fish on the little grand banker out of shelburne nova scotia

  • i've caught bigger chech out my page on myspace(jason1969)

  • Just once I want to catch one that big....and the 1 fish rule is total BS as long as longliners are taking thousands, it's ridiculous.

  • We must try to elect a non-conservative. A novel concept but just a thought.

  • wellthats a mighty halibut me and my dad had one that was 126 lbs dressed

  • Halibut shortage!? Youve got to be kidding me...i've commercially fished halibut in Alaska for years...there are more halibut now than ever! sometimes i can hardly believe the density of the fish we pull up...it seems like the ocean floor in certain areas is just a halibut carpet...it's bizarre. the stocks are healthy as ever and actually increasing.

there are areas around kodiak island where you can space hooks 15ft apart and come up with a halibut on 80% of them...for 2 miles!!

  • In Canada we have over 15,000 federal government fisheries managers that cost us over $4b a year so we need a crisis here and there to justify these horrible horrible public parasites :(

  • Oh yeah.... sporties are also allowed a generous catch of lincod, snapper, rockfish and salmon. A little bit of conservation on their part is needed. ---cry me a river----reducing the limit of hali by one less per trip--- hahahahahh get over it.

  • Yes it is a pitty, commercial and sporties fighting for the right to catch what is left of the great pacific halibut. By the way sporties do catch at least 2 million pounds of hali each year of the coast of B.C.

  • I agree with SalmonSlayer28. Commercial guys get to take thousands of pounds. Sport guys are limited to two. What we take is a drop in the bucket compared to them.

  • Do you work as an activist stressing it's habitat destruction, pollution and overfishing that are the real problems or are you just beginning to think about trying to help?

  • i'm from nova scotia but living out west now on vancouvr island. our problem out here is with the pacific halibut commision. last year we were threatened by the americans to reduce the recreational limit from 3 halibut to two in possesion. they said that if we did not comply they were going to block ucluelet harbor to prevent us from taking charters. these guys takes thousands of pounds a day and they're complaining about the 3 chicken halis my guests take...its brutal

  • I fight those destroying the ocean here so I'm wishing you all the best in building up the courage to resist the fish bullies. Trawling is petroleum development here and the oil is not ours. It's still brutal here too. Good luck :)

  • Don't you have a barbie on the boat? I'd be grillin' on the way in.

  • Canadian fisheries officials will mash your face into the cement wharf with the slightest violation or resistance by the inshore that don't have the NEOCON afiliations :) I've seen what DFO does to people that resist so get real dude.

  • Hahaha, worst answer to a simple question I've ever seen. :D Nice hallys though.

  • Do you know who DFO is and what their agenda is?

  • Haha, yeah man, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and while I may not know their specific Atlantic side agenda, I do know their Pacific. Which is beside the point though, cuz I was just commenting on how dramatic you went on that poor UK guy, haha. Doubt he even knew what the hell you were yapping about.

  • Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) gets paid by taxpayers but I still don't know who they are really working for. Maybe Exxon/mobil/Shell or maybe OPEC or some NEOCON/Nazi world order people or maybe British Royalty?? I honestly don't have a clue :)

  • PEI gets less than one percent of the Canadian Quota, DFO is a joke, money driven politicans scratching backs of the rich.

  • It's DFO's job to get cheap oil to the states. We are the joke :(

  • @dasteeleman same length fishery here In Newfoundland...48hours

  • how far south down the atlantic coast do the halibut go?

  • Mid Atlantic I suppose

  • I fish from New Jersey and south. No halibut around here. Fished in Plymouth Mass and was told occasional halibut. Going to Maine this summer, plan on catching a halibut!

  • thats a big ass fish, maybe halibut is an ancient fish that managed to survive for millions of years? lol

  • Bonnie fish Lobspert, Biggest 1 I ever saw was 22stone & caught off the Faroe Bank in 1991 on a mackerel baited longline-It was a monster

  • Nice flattie!

  • Helped my Dad catch one that weighed 75 pounds. It was too big for our net, so we beached it.

Broke the split ring trying to pull it on shore, but we bagged it in the end... Real good eatin too.

We're on the west coast. They can actually grow to over 400 pounds.

  • east coast halibut (alantic) can be nearly twice the pacific halibut size. 9' long and 700#

  • How amny pounds do those go, I'd guess at least 300-400?

  • 230 TO 240 POUNDS SOMETHING LIKE THAT
