GIMP compared to photoshop really isnt that bad. For a completely free image manipulation program, GIMP is the way to go indubitably... unless you want to take the risk of getting a virus from illegally downloading it. I, myself use photoshop and GIMP; they are practically interchangeable as long as you know both of the programs well.

@finegoldtube If your "strings" are the lines between the ancors in path all you have to do is switch to another tool after making it a selection.
