I am assuming you are referring to the year grades they're in...the movie is focused on the senior high school third years, that is the equivalent of Year 12 in other countries.

In Japan, there is no 4th year in senior high school...they have elementary school for 6 years, junior high for 3 years, and senior high for 3 years...and then they move up to college or university.

In high school in Japan, senior 3rd year is the highest grade.
