  • Try search Auslan Sign Bank in Google. It is a really good website where you can look up signs and it will give you a video clip with it for Australian Sign Language and plus you know you can trust the site.

    Happy Learning! :)

  • great video thanks for the lesson

  • You are great thanks so much deffinately a thumbs up

  • My friend taught me how to do that, except it was my left hand stationary. So basically, my right hand were making the "C" instead of my left, and the vowels were on my Left not my right hand.

Can some one explain this to me?

  • @kyoko0661 always use you dominant hand for your vowels and numbers and if you are using the alphabet to talk then you use the left Im unsure why but... thats how i got taught

  • I really appreciate the close up view of hands. My 4 year old is required to learn this for preschool, but I found it very hard to work out let alone teach her as all they sent home was a a photocopy of thumb nail size pictures. This has been the only Auslan video I could find that was close to suitable for us to learn off. It really would be great to get a preschool version which is like this but fun and kinda repeat / try with me, including the toilet signal etc.

  • wheresthe next lesson

  • Please continue and make other videos!

  • so are you aussie? Cause you dont sound like the people i know :D

  • @neverjanay eductated australian accent, found in the cities, commonly called the 'latte sipper' accent

  • Hey, I know American Sign Language and I'm interested in pursuing it in a career. Recently I have been interested in learning other Sign Languages and when I found this video I watched it over and over and over again till I got it down :) This was awesome, you should defiantly post more.

  • you should post more. you're a good teacher. =) thanks for the video!

  • I know someone that is deaf and can only do Auslan Sign Language so I can't wait to see more videos of you!!! Please make more.... You teach very well!

  • does it matter which hand you use to sign with?

  • @rasmikb1 no it doesnt, ive been doing auslan for 5 years and it doesnt matter which hand you sign with :)

  • Auslan is so different from American Sign Language!! I know ASL very well and learning this seems challenging. This was a great video for starters into the language. You did a great job.

  • Hey, really found your video helpful! I'm using the information from it for giving up talking for the 40 Hour Famine. Do you think you could post another one? Possibly with basic words or phrases? Thank you!

  • hey thanks mate i certainly can so sign language and i found yours so easy to follow thanks alot:D

  • Could you please subtitle it? I'm deaf, from USA, and am interested in learning Auslan. Thanks! And I enjoyed your numbers lesson. :-)

  • wow thankyou so much(:

i know its been three years but maybe you could think of doing another video. your videos are great to learn off

  • Interesting. I'm more accustomed to ASL but this in terms of numbers seems easier. It's so weird how in language a word or sign means one thing to one group and something totally different to another. "F" in Auslan is similar to "sit" in ASL. Auslan alphabet is crazy! I don't think I would be able to remember it. "People would be like did you just flip me off!" "No, I wasn't trying to I was trying to sign a letter!" Auslan is cool though! I want to try to master it.

  • hey :) thanks heaps for ur video. it helped me a lot. u should do more!

  • Thank you for the video! Very helpful. :)

  • thanks for this! very clear and i like how you explain it. more please :)

  • hey, great job, was wandering if I'm were supposed to do it with my right hand too, or left or it dosnt matter? thanks :)

  • @sistersxxEVERYTHING you can use either hand, it depends on which side is your dominant. James is right-handed so his left hand stays virtually motionless and he uses his right hand to make the letters (although he's made his video mirror image, he mentions this around the 3 min mark). If you were to do it left handed, everything'd be opposite, eg you'd make the C and do the motion for H with your left hand .

  • @laulaeee thankyouu

  • James your awes0me make some more videos please... Im learning more from you then the teacher here in our town!! Please please keep them coming!!

  • This is great, keep the videos coming please.

  • out of the number of videos ive looked up in learning sign language I had to say yours was the best :] I get confused between what hand to use though.. do you point to the vowls with your left hand on to the fingers on your right hand? or the other way round? Some vids do it differently.

  • @CleoneHeartsConverse he mentions this at the 3 min mark, it depends on which hand is your dominant. I'm right-handed so I use my right hand to point to my left (virtually stationary) hand but if you're left handed you can do it the opposite way.

  • I am not deaf, but I am learning sign language. I think it will be useful in life for if a know a deaf person. Sign language should be same all over world too. It is bad to have it different in other place.

  • why is there an american teaching auslan? oh well haha. guess im not complaining.

  • @alphanipple hes not. go to his channel, it says australian.

  • with the letter Z the hand thats vertical should hav all fingers curved towards the horizontal hand

  • Cool. Thank you for this !

  • Cheers James, good stuff.

  • hi I was just wondering what you do if you want to say the same letter twice? thanks!

  • @MissBec1994 just do it twise

  • whats the difference between american and australian sign language?

  • @kathryn0angle i agree. sign language should really be as universal as possible.

  • @jrb040892 No way, Not only is that impossible but it that would be insanely boring! Imagine if we all dressed the same, ate the same thing every day over and over again! Embrace multilingualism and multiculturalism, that's what keep the planet interesting!

  • @kathryn0angle One big difference is that Auslan is two handed when finger spelling with American you use one hand. Auslan looks to be derived from British which comes from Scotland. American from France and so on. The numbers are different as well his first 11 and 12 would be 20 and 30 in ASL the only numbers that were the same were1, 2, 4 and 5. "Me" and My/mine" are the same and the sign for "name" was different.

  • Good work James. I look forward to video number2

  • I liked the comments about the differances between the languages... I see that bsl and auslan use the same manual alphabet. My personal preferance is ASL manual but... then again I do also live here!

  • Good work :)

    Note 2 thing

"P" u need close 3 fingers index, ring, pinky need close not open but still understand.

"K" Your bit awkard for K lol Just go K point. at front not at rear finger lol but still understand

    9.8 / 10 :)

  • AWESOME! UPLOAD MORE!! =D

  • You're a member of the bloods!

    You canaDJIAN!

People are asking you to upload more you popular youtube pimp

  • How different are the various sign languages? Would an American (say) be able to understand Auslan easily? Or would the Australian have to use a different sign language?

  • @Marcuskristicus ASL (American Sign Language) is incredibly different from Australian Sign Language.

I'm guessing that people who sign with British Sign Language could understand Auslan, but ASL is based on French Sign Language (LSF) and there are very few signs that are similar with Auslan.

  • So how to deaf people from different English-speaking countries communicate? Is there a "universal" English sign?

  • Make more make more! I want to learn!

  • loved it, keep up the good work

  • thanks that was great

  • I just learnt the whole thing and then realised I was doing it back to front.

  • Thank you for posting this, it was very easy to understand and very helpful! Thanks :)

  • awesome - thanks for this lesson!

  • Cool! Thanks for posting this. :) Auslan's alphabet is very similar to BSL's alphabet.

  • domoarigato7

yeah Auslan very similar BSL and NZSL too

because Auslan, BSL and NZSL are family so they call BANZSL... look up wikipedia if want to.. :-)

  • That makes sense taking into consideration the history or these three countries and their relations with Britain. Thank you for saying something, I learned something new today.

  • Although different they were refered to by Ted Johnson a few years ago in research he did. At no point did he intend to create a collective language between the 3, but used the acronym BANZSL as a reference only.

I read it years ago when I studied Auslan.

Most Deaf wont know nor understand what BANZSL means, let alone most of us Auslan Interpreters unless they also read the paper.

But I like how you mentioned it Kiwi539.

  • Thank you for this :D

  • Thanks so much, you should make more videos, if you are please comment back and tell me, as i will subscribe and be aware of your videos.

  • thanks for you video, very helpful~!!!!!

  • good introduction, i especially like how you do some of the alternate signs for letters, the only thing i wish to add is that the person i was taught by said that T can also be index finger pointing to your palm and your palm face up,

with any luck u understand that but i doubt u do haha and unfortunally i am unable to show you

  • Thank you, this is excellent!

  • this is so confusing!

    "g" = pretend to hold a sword.

    so much different from asl.

but thanks for posting, it was really interesting.

  • It reminds me a little of BSL!

  • This is a really great video - easy to understand.. perfect for slow-to-learn-things people like me *lol* Thank you very much

  • perfect!

very helpful, it's hard to find videos online, especially of people who also speak spoken english as they go through it.

    please continue with conversation help!

  • that was great.. easy to understand,.

im thinking of doing a signing lanugauge show,, just havnt got around to it lol,x

  • thank you for teaching me

  • you should make another video. i've been looking for lessons but i can't understand them 'cause they don't speak. and the subtitles are confusing!

  • thanks so much!!!

  • This is an excellent video. Does anyone know where I can find more?

  • I lived in England for 13 years but then I moved to Australia and I find it kinda of confusing to have to swap. They are similar but there are subtle differences. thank you ♥

  • that was awesome me and my dad are trying to learn together, and this has really helped us out! please do more and thatnks for taking the time!

  • Wonderful! Thanks for taking the time to show us!

  • thankyou so much! i work with disabled kids and this is really helping me out. Please do some more!!

  • Jaaames! Come back and do some more!

  • What exactly are the differences between BSL and Auslan, do you know? I am curious.

I am learning ASL and BSL, by the way.

  • That was fun and basic, I think I might copy you and do this on youtube so I get the experience James, it can't hurt trying, my lady does American, So this will be good also the basics.

  • Heya,

Im deaf and live in United States.. I find out Sign Language from around world very interest... i notice similar alphabet with BSL and Auslan, why is that.. and i try practice auslan alphabet..but very tough bec American sign language only have alphabet use 1 hand..

    all in all.. VERY KEWL!!!

  • Australia used to be a British Colony, and our first schools for the deaf were run by Scottish and English teachers. :) If you're interested in the history of Auslan, google for vicdeaf anne bremner, and there is a video you can watch. It's pretty interesting!

  • @curiousjapan Anne Bremner! I know that name, awesome woman! I did the Auslan Diploma and graduated last month, Anne was one of my teachers, one subject she taught was Auslan Linguistics-great class, brilliant teacher! PS, a word of advice, please learn Auslan from an Australian Deaf person, out of respect and to make sure you are the learning their language correctly and in correlation with Australian Deaf culture.

  • nice! im trying to learn, simply because i volunteer for st john ambulance and ive had to try to communicate with deaf people before... which wasnt easy until we got the pen and paper out!!!

    is there more coming?

  • Awesome job James, I've always wanted to learn sign language and this video is a great introduction to it! If you could put some more videos on that would be fantastic, are you learning from classes or something? I keep practicing signing 'My name is Matthew' now, haha. :P Well done, please keep it up! :):)

  • @Futurista85 are you doing it left handed for the viewers to copy easier or are you naturally left handed??
