  • Yea, this is just like I remember this tune from when it came out. I was just a kid. One of the best era's of rock that can't be duplicated and won't be. It's kind of funny, my kid who's 19 listens to all of this rock. Nice to see it didn't die.

  • F-In Great TUNE! Classic !

  • love it

  • shameain't it" should be able to sneaky!

  • Any chance you would post this entire album? Or, if not the entire album, at least the song Monkey Shine?

  • man when i hear this for some reason im reminded of hot summers in 78..79,smokin and doing nothing, all the girls had tans,10 bucks lasted two days,a crappy bag of mexican pot,an old plymouth fury with jenson triaxials in the headrest, frisbee, chicks in tube tops with farmer jeans on and the front unclipped..platform flip flops........oh to be young again!

  • @fpopee dude....amazing mental picture you managed to paint for me....NAILED IT!!

  • Would someone post Jefftown Creek either from this album or Flat As a Pancake or both?

  • The girl on the cover was married to Roger Boyd, the keyboardist. Don't believe their married anymore.

  • For me it was some roller rink in Arlington, TX w/ my older, "cooler" sister. John Nitzinger, a black rock guitarist & heir to Jimi Hendrix (and at that time could outplay Ted Nugent!) was the headliner, some podunk band from Oklahoma opened up the show & covered this one. Must've been '76 or '77. lol rock 'n' roll never forgets baby!

  • F*&^*^%^ YEA!!!!!!

  • I saw these guys at T.S.I.A Charity's annual motorcycle bash in Erlin Ohio in '96! Totally Awesome!!

  • This (in my opinion) is the best version!

  • Who is the girl on the album cover. That's a girl who loves rock!

  • Id give my left arm to see these guys

  • I bought this album in the 70s.Still the best even now

  • @ fernominal, You are so right my friend. I haven't heard this song in forever. Thank you TSN1957 for uploading this CLASSIC.

  • This was the best version

  • I cant get enough of that bass! Damn good:)

  • This is good interstate driving music:)

  • best version!!

  • one of the best synth solos ever...

  • man I still got this album on vinyl,,great band.....glad I was there in the 70`s to listen to them....

  • what a killer tune, jesus christ!!!!!

  • Hey Tobykenobe,

Any chance that you could share those albums?

  • Yeah man, I hear you. I used to think the same way. It's crazy to listen to somebody singing about (and worshipping!) somebody you don't know or even believe in. Then I came to know Jesus Christ and he showed me that I'd been living in a real-life "Matrix" controlled not by machines, but by Satan. Now Petra makes sense...and not just to me: 40 years, 24 albums, 10 million albums sold, 4 Grammys...I just prayed that Christ will "free your mind" as well. He loves you so much. God Bless You!

  • @PrideBacker

you are dead center of the matrix. Right where the controllers of the world have their most power. Believing in something that can't be proven, and demands you maintain struggling in every imaginable form of oppression devised by man on the empty promise that you will be rewarded someday. All the leaders of religions profess that same general idea, yet they ALL prosper beyond just getting by. Wealth, Sex, Power, Admiration. Yup that's the story. You suffer so that they don't.

  • @z3dsdead But it is proven...to me! The 1st time I remember "hearing" Him, I had this huge problem, with only 2 options, neither good. Then I thought of a 3rd option that totally solved it. I thought, 'glad I thought of that! And I "heard" this thought that said, "you DIDN'T think of it!". It was real. Also, the Spirit gives me "love, joy, peace, patience....". Even if I just die and rot, my belief has been worthwhile! Don't let religious leaders' hypocrasy slam shut the doors of your mind!

  • @PrideBacker

If you are happy, enjoy it. ME: raised catholic, born again@15 , was strongly discouraged from my college plans. theosophic/philosophy was my passion towards something else, anything but a LIB. ARTS path. 20+ yrs shame/guilt of leaving the flock was my fear program. 6 yrs ago I began exploring origins of Christianity, and what I found was a worm infested apple from the start. Nothing in Christianity is new. Only pagan ritual, renamed, and anyone still not joining up, was executed.

  • @z3dsdead (I apologize to Head East fans, I know this isn't the place...but it's important). You are right about religion; man will ruin anything given enough time, look at the state of our nation and world! I encourage you to look PAST religion. Instead of studying religion; study Christ. Really dig into the four gospels and Paul's letters.

If you want to talk more, email me: brettbarnes@charter.net. I don't care about debating this with you...but I do care about YOU.

  • @PrideBacker Agreed, I didn't intend to start a thread and carry it on. Sorry, the song was great, and Head East was a preety cool band. Why else would I have every bothered to seek this classic out? I will reply to your email address a bit later, the weekend is here and the family becons, so we are heading towards the North East to find something fun. Even when there's never been any reason aside from trying not to forget...

  • @PrideBacker and perhaps you have not yet seen that they still have your mind under lock and key.........I wish you joy and success in your search, but why not keep it to yourself and let others come to their own conclusions. don't presume that those who don't agree with you are in the dark. we just came thru here for some Head East - not a sermon

  • Lead singer, John Schlitt, became a Christian and went on to become lead singer for the #1 Christian rock group of all time: Petra! Check out some of their videos with John!

  • @PrideBacker

    AAAAHHHHAAAAHHHAAAHHHAAA!!!!!!

He went from a second tier rock band that was pretty cool to the epitome of SUCK.

    Petra? AAAAHHHHAAAAHHHAAAHHHAAA!!!!!!

  • I still love this song after all these years! The album cover was great too.

  • I had a great time when I saw Head East for the fist time. The year was 1979, in Omaha, NE at September Fest outdoors.

  • This is the greatest rock song in the rock n roll era.

  • this song never fails to knock me down flat as a pancake. Home boys.

  • The opening reminds me of Peter Wolf! Great song!! thanks

  • 3 people couldnt listen to it more than once

  • I've been listening to this album for over thirty years, I gotta say Mr. Sommerville is really gettin it on this song. That man wrote some great songs, does anybody know what he is doing these days?

  • This is a concert good energy.

  • I saw Headeast with Montrose and Foghat in 1977 or 1978! I remember sneaking in a pint t of rum in the front of my jeans and wearing a long enough corduroy shirt to cover it! We could get away with it back then. Probably paid about $8.00 for the ticket. Love this song!

  • @castromusicfreak for me it was rush, montrose, and foghat one night at Portland's Memorial coliseum a year earlier. Beyond incredible! A life changing experience.

  • THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON !!! GO PAT'S

  • I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!

  • Long before reason......

  • Saw these guys at a roller rink in Pekin, Il back in '78? '79? Don't remember the year but can't forget the song! Thanks for posting.

  • great song at the skating rink the floor filled up when this song came on i miss the 70's

  • Will real rock and roll like this ever come back? I hope so,but probalbly not in my lifetime. More the pity.

  • Classic rock doesn't get much better than this.

  • Palmer Auditorium Davenport, IA late 70's. Multiple encores and pea soup fog to drive home 50 miles in but worth it!

  • @macgolf610 Hell ya I was THERE TOO!!!!!

  • Yep I was there too!!!..

  • I saw these guys in concert in Nashville, Tn. in '78 or '79 as opener for Blue Oyster Cult. Head East blew 'em out of the water. I immediately bought the Hear East album, yes, ALBUM. There's a reason it's called CLASSIC rock!!!!

  • Man oh man!....'member this song in the 8 track player in my van @ 1Am heading to the next party!!!..Wow...those days are LONG gone but NOT forgotten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was the song I used to let my ex g/f know I knew we were over with, even so we were still "together" 2 more years, I knew we were over but couldn`t make myself walk away. The lyrics tell the truth about her. Save my life was about me.

  • Thanks for posting Your right you can't listen just once! You can put this song in your all time 50 of greatest rock songs. This song rocks!!

  • Greatest version..

  • Central New York loves Haed East!!!

  • @JenandLyla96

I'm not surprised to see Head East being praised from a central New Yorker. When I went to college in Rochester and then Syracuse, I discovered how much central and upstate folks loved great Midwestern rock.

  • @written12

This is for all the Head East fans in Pittsburgh and Western PA...I'm just another one, yeah;)

  • Saw these guys live in this year......yeah i been lookin for awhile for this...

  • The Head east I listen to as a teenager, Lots of interaction with the crowd, Great drummer, and keys stand out. no doubt my favorite along with intro to Jefftown creek. lets not forget flat as a pan cake another Great album

  • Rockin' the house down!! I used to sit and stare at this album cover once upon a time!

  • I want to say that this came from Lloyd Nobel arena or Dallas. I went to both concerts that year. John Schlitt has never been surpassed as a lead vocalist, and the live vocal harmonies of Head East have never been surpassed. Kudos for Roger Boyd for keeping the band alive good times

  • @stratbnder

This was recorded at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Years ago I checked the liner notes and that was the only gym that they included as a recording site.

  • Truly one of my favorites of the '70s. Deserved to peak much higher than 68 on the "Hot 100."

  • great song!!

  • Thumbs up if you keep coming back here to listen to this song...and it keeps getting better

  • @SuperAkebono

Yeah, a lot of us do come back to this one. What a loud, joyous bit of rock. This is a timeless one- I can imagine someone discovering this 100 years from now and getting off on its energy.

  • @SuperAkebono OVER AND OVER AND OVERRRRRRRRRRRR

  • @SuperAkebono yeah it just keeps getting better!!! Cant get enough of this song!!!

  • @TheShredfester

yeah it does. It was the best 99 cents I've ever spent on a download

  • @SuperAkebono I come back several times a week:) Songs like this are few and far between! Just one of those that Hits The Spot!!!!!

    Crank up the volume!!!

  • I TotALLY agree.I LOVE this song.I cranked it up in my brother driveway one day and he yelled at me.Can't help it.Great song!!

  • I hear Ya!! I used to work graveyard at a bar with this song on a digital jukebox, surround sound. No business, no problem. Crank up the volume and away I went! Keep on rockin' msjoanne.

  • You're right, TSN1957! I couldn't listen just once! ;)

  • one of the best live songs ever

  • Good guys. They broke into my apartment in SF in the spring of "81 with a bunch of Indiana groupies because they knew we had blow. Had never heard of them before that night. Just regular guys, totally unfazed by their fame. A good time was had by all!

  • OMG that's so funny! was everyone okay?

they broke into your apartment? still so funny!

    sorry i shouldn't laugh...

  • takes me back to the good times !!

  • thnks good song.

  • Love it!!!!

  • Wow. Do I sure wish it was still the '70's. April Wine and such... We used to have bands like this play our High School dances. WOW.

  • John get off the god trip bible banging flat erath people back then & get your music back . Prove god exists ? The sea was parted by a tsunami -da

  • I thought this was Spinal Tap

  • i just saw them a couple years ago in arnolds park ia

  • The drummer sings the first part of each verse, yes?

  • Correct. Steve Huston does a great job sharing vocals here.

I've always preferred the live version. So much energy. Listened to this hundreds of times in college.

  • im 40 now but saw them in St.Joe Mo. when I was alot younger and they toe up the stage and i was a fan eversince,

  • head east live...is a great album!! I still have it!!...somewhere in the closet. No turntable. Great party record. I LOVED that cover!!!!!!

  • @shakey64 Great song. Great solid, melodic rock.

And, yeah, the cover. It kind of captures what for many of us back then was a dream woman.

And, of course, the open road behind her. Yeah, it was the American dream for a young male back then, wasn't it.

  • Indeed. When I eventually drove across the country (from CA to North Carolina) this song and the album cover were on my mind. Stopping at mediocre restaurants and flrting with those midwestern waitresses and girls. What could be better?

  • @MetricSU

Nice little memory and picture there.

By the way, the album cover, as mesmerizing as it was for many of us, has nothing of the vulgar quality that you see in music acts nowadays.

  • Agreed. She's just cute and pretty wholesome loooking. That's what we 18-year-old boys found titillating back then!

I think I heard somewhere that she was one of the band member's girl friend, or maybe even wife.

  • saw these guys at the shrine mosque in springfield missouri in 75 or 76 too young to drive there but old enough to get f@#ked up and enjoy some rock and roll!!

  • @wzrubicon You saw Head East in a mosque? Yeah, I know it wasn't a real mosque.

Anyway, they were huge in the Midwest, weren't they? As much as some of us in New York were enamored of the Punk and New Wave stuff that burst on the scene in the late 70s, there was nothing better than the hard rocking bands that came out of the Midwest - and these songs have aged very well.

  • Yeah a big midwest band of the 70s. Being a college town, we were able to get many bands who were starting out or on their way up. STYX, Kansas, BOC, ect. My first concert at around 13 was Steppenwolf there in Springfield. Although I am a colorado native and moved back to Denver where it was a huge concert draw dirung the 70s and huge stadium bands. I will never forget the days of seeing these bands in 5000 seat theaters. Very intimate settings.

  • @wzrubicon It's a helluva difference seeing a band in a 5000 seat theater rather than some silly stadium(hey, seeing sports in some of those behemoths is no pleasure). And let's not forget that concerts in those days didn't have giant tv screens. There were wild stage shows like Alice Cooper, Kiss, but there were plenty of great bands such as Head East that just came out played great music, had a natural, down-to-earth kind of charisma.

  • Great sound! awsome.

  • :O .. did AC/D copy there riff ??

  • shave my wife I'm going down for the last time

  • 2 funny! :^0

  • @icfnord That is the best line I've heard in a long time! lol Great!

  • @icfnord

    epic

  • @icfnord Woman with a clean shave is better then a white line!!!!

  • @icfnord .lollol..had mine stand up-side down in the shower,got-er clean an dined out.lol,,75/750the widowmaker

  • @icfnord good one!

  • Man I want to be 16 again!

  • I hear you nighthawk but it was more like the 60's and 70's (before disco started in 77) RULED.

I saw them in Buffalo, NY in 76 if I remember right or was it 75??. The other poster was right, they were opening for Styx

  • God i miss bands like this. 1970s and 80s ruled.

  • they still get out . they play every ear at the horney toad lounge at lake of the ozarks. got to go last sept. and they are good as ever

  • This is the version I first heard and remember the best. Thanks for posting!

  • the song is awesome... rocks hard. i dont know about best live album ever cause The Band of Gypsys live at the fillmore is probably the greatest live album. that or Queen live at wembley. Obviously the guy who said cram it isn't very open minded. lol

  • My guitar teacher is the bassist from this band. He is a beast at anything that involves music . . . exept singing lol

  • Thats awsome

  • I think this whole album is THE best live album ever! I wish the rest the rest of it was posted.

  • Saw them in 76, I think. They opened for Styx and Foghat. They were quite excellent.

  • that sounds rite!i loved them then & love to go back to the good ol dayz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of the best Live songs ever

  • Yeah, and this is no studio touch up job.

These guys played and sang it live.

Man, this song and performance has held up brilliantly.

  • I was lucky enoght to see Head East at the Capitol Theater in Logan Utah in '79 or ' 80, Paid $6. Second best I have ever scene! If you don't like the EAST you can cram IT!

  • Perhaps a little strong there at the end with the "cram it" comment, but I know what you mean.

If you can't get off on Head east's best songs, you really don't have a taste for solid rock.

  • I used to be in a cover band that did this song. It was so fun to play and always got a great reaction even from the younger kids. We did a damn fine version of it but NOBODY beats this version.....not even HE themselves!!!! Slamming live sound!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • John Schlitt is one of rocks greatest vocals! He is also one of the best Christian rock vocalist also!

  • Great live version, way better than the radio version! I remember the record cover too; how could any guy growing up in the 70's forget that?

  • Comment removed

  • Great Band!

  • Holy s***!!! Pardon my language but that just blew me away!!!

  • Agreed. I played this song before every final exam my last two years in college. Got the blood going. Nothing beats this live version.

Saw them at the San Jose Civic Center, 1978, I think. Angel was the headliner. Head East blew them away.

  • Still rockin in Missouri

  • any videos with Odie Odum on it ?

  • P.S. I heard along time ago that this album would not be put on CD. can anybody verify this. lost the one i had in the 80s but bought another on at a garage sale for $4.00 $18.00 for stylus in the late 90s still got it in good condition and the memories priceless.

  • this is the best version you will hear of this song. even better than their studio version not only that but it was performed at its peak and live this whole album both discs was a magical night.

  • I have said that this is the best version for over 30 years now. Man i remember partying hard to this song

  • Remember this song...

  • I remember how hot I thought that woman was

  • That is Debbie. Roger's ex wife. Debbie's brother Mark Boatman become the bass player in Head East for a while. Last I heard he is a lawyer down in St. Louis.

  • Please post "Take A Hand" from this album... Please?

  • f**cking great song thanks for posting

  • this is a fantastic song that I never hear on the radio. I still have the album (flat as a pancake). Great posting! Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting this! The radio stations here only play the studio version, which can't compare to this live track.

  • This song sounds fantastic live!

    The ending is so beautiful!

"SAVE MY LIFE I'M GOIN DOWN FOR THE LAST TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • Oh, boy, what songs are lying around way back in the mind, way back in the late 70s.

It's been years since I heard this, but it came roaring back.

Head East was one of those bands that always delivered. Stupidly, I never checked them live. Like so many of those midwest rock bands, they had a reputation for playing great shows.

Thanks so much for posting this.
