Yea, this is just like I remember this tune from when it came out. I was just a kid. One of the best era's of rock that can't be duplicated and won't be. It's kind of funny, my kid who's 19 listens to all of this rock. Nice to see it didn't die.
man when i hear this for some reason im reminded of hot summers in 78..79,smokin and doing nothing, all the girls had tans,10 bucks lasted two days,a crappy bag of mexican pot,an old plymouth fury with jenson triaxials in the headrest, frisbee, chicks in tube tops with farmer jeans on and the front unclipped..platform flip flops........oh to be young again!
For me it was some roller rink in Arlington, TX w/ my older, "cooler" sister. John Nitzinger, a black rock guitarist & heir to Jimi Hendrix (and at that time could outplay Ted Nugent!) was the headliner, some podunk band from Oklahoma opened up the show & covered this one. Must've been '76 or '77. lol rock 'n' roll never forgets baby!
Yeah man, I hear you. I used to think the same way. It's crazy to listen to somebody singing about (and worshipping!) somebody you don't know or even believe in. Then I came to know Jesus Christ and he showed me that I'd been living in a real-life "Matrix" controlled not by machines, but by Satan. Now Petra makes sense...and not just to me: 40 years, 24 albums, 10 million albums sold, 4 Grammys...I just prayed that Christ will "free your mind" as well. He loves you so much. God Bless You!
you are dead center of the matrix. Right where the controllers of the world have their most power. Believing in something that can't be proven, and demands you maintain struggling in every imaginable form of oppression devised by man on the empty promise that you will be rewarded someday. All the leaders of religions profess that same general idea, yet they ALL prosper beyond just getting by. Wealth, Sex, Power, Admiration. Yup that's the story. You suffer so that they don't.
@z3dsdead But it is proven...to me! The 1st time I remember "hearing" Him, I had this huge problem, with only 2 options, neither good. Then I thought of a 3rd option that totally solved it. I thought, 'glad I thought of that! And I "heard" this thought that said, "you DIDN'T think of it!". It was real. Also, the Spirit gives me "love, joy, peace, patience....". Even if I just die and rot, my belief has been worthwhile! Don't let religious leaders' hypocrasy slam shut the doors of your mind!
If you are happy, enjoy it. ME: raised catholic, born again@15 , was strongly discouraged from my college plans. theosophic/philosophy was my passion towards something else, anything but a LIB. ARTS path. 20+ yrs shame/guilt of leaving the flock was my fear program. 6 yrs ago I began exploring origins of Christianity, and what I found was a worm infested apple from the start. Nothing in Christianity is new. Only pagan ritual, renamed, and anyone still not joining up, was executed.
@z3dsdead (I apologize to Head East fans, I know this isn't the place...but it's important). You are right about religion; man will ruin anything given enough time, look at the state of our nation and world! I encourage you to look PAST religion. Instead of studying religion; study Christ. Really dig into the four gospels and Paul's letters.
If you want to talk more, email me: brettbarnes@charter.net. I don't care about debating this with you...but I do care about YOU.
@PrideBacker Agreed, I didn't intend to start a thread and carry it on. Sorry, the song was great, and Head East was a preety cool band. Why else would I have every bothered to seek this classic out? I will reply to your email address a bit later, the weekend is here and the family becons, so we are heading towards the North East to find something fun. Even when there's never been any reason aside from trying not to forget...
@PrideBacker and perhaps you have not yet seen that they still have your mind under lock and key.........I wish you joy and success in your search, but why not keep it to yourself and let others come to their own conclusions. don't presume that those who don't agree with you are in the dark. we just came thru here for some Head East - not a sermon

Outdoor show in Panama City Beach Florida, 1979.... riding high on this live album... they put on an unbelievable show. Great vocals, musicianship, and showmanship!!
I've been listening to this album for over thirty years, I gotta say Mr. Sommerville is really gettin it on this song. That man wrote some great songs, does anybody know what he is doing these days?

I saw Headeast with Montrose and Foghat in 1977 or 1978! I remember sneaking in a pint t of rum in the front of my jeans and wearing a long enough corduroy shirt to cover it! We could get away with it back then. Probably paid about $8.00 for the ticket. Love this song!
@castromusicfreak for me it was rush, montrose, and foghat one night at Portland's Memorial coliseum a year earlier. Beyond incredible! A life changing experience.
I saw these guys in concert in Nashville, Tn. in '78 or '79 as opener for Blue Oyster Cult. Head East blew 'em out of the water. I immediately bought the Hear East album, yes, ALBUM. There's a reason it's called CLASSIC rock!!!!
Man oh man!....'member this song in the 8 track player in my van @ 1Am heading to the next party!!!..Wow...those days are LONG gone but NOT forgotten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was the song I used to let my ex g/f know I knew we were over with, even so we were still "together" 2 more years, I knew we were over but couldn`t make myself walk away. The lyrics tell the truth about her. Save my life was about me.
I'm not surprised to see Head East being praised from a central New Yorker. When I went to college in Rochester and then Syracuse, I discovered how much central and upstate folks loved great Midwestern rock.
The Head east I listen to as a teenager, Lots of interaction with the crowd, Great drummer, and keys stand out. no doubt my favorite along with intro to Jefftown creek. lets not forget flat as a pan cake another Great album
I want to say that this came from Lloyd Nobel arena or Dallas. I went to both concerts that year. John Schlitt has never been surpassed as a lead vocalist, and the live vocal harmonies of Head East have never been surpassed. Kudos for Roger Boyd for keeping the band alive good times
This was recorded at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Years ago I checked the liner notes and that was the only gym that they included as a recording site.
Yeah, a lot of us do come back to this one. What a loud, joyous bit of rock. This is a timeless one- I can imagine someone discovering this 100 years from now and getting off on its energy.
I hear Ya!! I used to work graveyard at a bar with this song on a digital jukebox, surround sound. No business, no problem. Crank up the volume and away I went! Keep on rockin' msjoanne.
Good guys. They broke into my apartment in SF in the spring of "81 with a bunch of Indiana groupies because they knew we had blow. Had never heard of them before that night. Just regular guys, totally unfazed by their fame. A good time was had by all!
Indeed. When I eventually drove across the country (from CA to North Carolina) this song and the album cover were on my mind. Stopping at mediocre restaurants and flrting with those midwestern waitresses and girls. What could be better?
saw these guys at the shrine mosque in springfield missouri in 75 or 76 too young to drive there but old enough to get f@#ked up and enjoy some rock and roll!!
@wzrubicon You saw Head East in a mosque? Yeah, I know it wasn't a real mosque.
Anyway, they were huge in the Midwest, weren't they? As much as some of us in New York were enamored of the Punk and New Wave stuff that burst on the scene in the late 70s, there was nothing better than the hard rocking bands that came out of the Midwest - and these songs have aged very well.
Yeah a big midwest band of the 70s. Being a college town, we were able to get many bands who were starting out or on their way up. STYX, Kansas, BOC, ect. My first concert at around 13 was Steppenwolf there in Springfield. Although I am a colorado native and moved back to Denver where it was a huge concert draw dirung the 70s and huge stadium bands. I will never forget the days of seeing these bands in 5000 seat theaters. Very intimate settings.
@wzrubicon It's a helluva difference seeing a band in a 5000 seat theater rather than some silly stadium(hey, seeing sports in some of those behemoths is no pleasure). And let's not forget that concerts in those days didn't have giant tv screens. There were wild stage shows like Alice Cooper, Kiss, but there were plenty of great bands such as Head East that just came out played great music, had a natural, down-to-earth kind of charisma.
@icfnord great! rode subs 82-88.I was from pHilly and knew this song from Hed East playing the clubs.Wish I could hae thought of' shave my wife I'm going down for the last time " lol
the song is awesome... rocks hard. i dont know about best live album ever cause The Band of Gypsys live at the fillmore is probably the greatest live album. that or Queen live at wembley. Obviously the guy who said cram it isn't very open minded. lol
I was lucky enoght to see Head East at the Capitol Theater in Logan Utah in '79 or ' 80, Paid $6. Second best I have ever scene! If you don't like the EAST you can cram IT!
I used to be in a cover band that did this song. It was so fun to play and always got a great reaction even from the younger kids. We did a damn fine version of it but NOBODY beats this version.....not even HE themselves!!!! Slamming live sound!!!!
P.S. I heard along time ago that this album would not be put on CD. can anybody verify this. lost the one i had in the 80s but bought another on at a garage sale for $4.00 $18.00 for stylus in the late 90s still got it in good condition and the memories priceless.
this is the best version you will hear of this song. even better than their studio version not only that but it was performed at its peak and live this whole album both discs was a magical night.
That is Debbie. Roger's ex wife. Debbie's brother Mark Boatman become the bass player in Head East for a while. Last I heard he is a lawyer down in St. Louis.
Oh, boy, what songs are lying around way back in the mind, way back in the late 70s.
It's been years since I heard this, but it came roaring back.
Head East was one of those bands that always delivered. Stupidly, I never checked them live. Like so many of those midwest rock bands, they had a reputation for playing great shows.
Yea, this is just like I remember this tune from when it came out. I was just a kid. One of the best era's of rock that can't be duplicated and won't be. It's kind of funny, my kid who's 19 listens to all of this rock. Nice to see it didn't die.

And, yeah, the cover. It kind of captures what for many of us back then was a dream woman.
And, of course, the open road behind her. Yeah, it was the American dream for a young male back then, wasn't it.

Indeed. When I eventually drove across the country (from CA to North Carolina) this song and the album cover were on my mind. Stopping at mediocre restaurants and flrting with those midwestern waitresses and girls. What could be better?

@MetricSU
Nice little memory and picture there.
By the way, the album cover, as mesmerizing as it was for many of us, has nothing of the vulgar quality that you see in music acts nowadays.

Agreed. She's just cute and pretty wholesome loooking. That's what we 18-year-old boys found titillating back then!
I think I heard somewhere that she was one of the band member's girl friend, or maybe even wife.

saw these guys at the shrine mosque in springfield missouri in 75 or 76 too young to drive there but old enough to get f@#ked up and enjoy some rock and roll!!
wzrubicon 2 years ago

Very intimate settings.
wzrubicon 2 years ago
@wzrubicon It's a helluva difference seeing a band in a 5000 seat theater rather than some silly stadium(hey, seeing sports in some of those behemoths is no pleasure). And let's not forget that concerts in those days didn't have giant tv screens. There were wild stage shows like Alice Cooper, Kiss, but there were plenty of great bands such as Head East that just came out played great music, had a natural, down-to-earth kind of charisma.

I hear you nighthawk but it was more like the 60's and 70's (before disco started in 77) RULED.
I saw them in Buffalo, NY in 76 if I remember right or was it 75??. The other poster was right, they were opening for Styx

Yeah, and this is no studio touch up job.
These guys played and sang it live.
Man, this song and performance has held up brilliantly.

I was lucky enoght to see Head East at the Capitol Theater in Logan Utah in '79 or ' 80, Paid $6. Second best I have ever scene! If you don't like the EAST you can cram IT!
jessedowns 2 years ago
Perhaps a little strong there at the end with the "cram it" comment, but I know what you mean.
If you can't get off on Head east's best songs, you really don't have a taste for solid rock.

I used to be in a cover band that did this song. It was so fun to play and always got a great reaction even from the younger kids. We did a damn fine version of it but NOBODY beats this version.....not even HE themselves!!!! Slamming live sound!!!!

Agreed. I played this song before every final exam my last two years in college. Got the blood going. Nothing beats this live version.
Saw them at the San Jose Civic Center, 1978, I think. Angel was the headliner. Head East blew them away.

Thanks so much for posting this.
