@MarkoAbo :) looking into a CTS but that's 350 yards+ with a 1oz plastic lure. No rod or pole out there can reach these fish. plus it would take the fun out of fishing for them? thank you Brian :)
Real awesome video! I wonder how many hours of video deleted before you actually got this footage lol. I set up my camera also on the beach, ready for a catch.
dude you're a mess, fish slime in hair, $400 pliers shove in pocket, no waders,, lolll.. did you have a tripod set up on the beach?? wtf/? LOL nice fish though.
@fakeusa it was cold out to! the pliers are 5$ basspro jobs but i did get beat up that am. at the same time i did get big fish? also yes i use a tri-pod.
@brianmoc haha,, I thought though they were the Van Staal TI pliers.. Oh one other funny thing rewatching this,, you throw your hat down to protect your sealed VS reel,, Come on man you can bury those things in sand, get that sucker dirty !! Good luck this year if ya' go out, I hope to hit my local beach soon as well.
@fakeusa Van Staal TI pliers are the bigger waste of money hands down. Plus trust me I have to protect my Van staal you can bury those things in sand but if you use it like me it will brake. sealed reel or not they have a braking point in sand and salt. My one reel has spots of rust on this year! RUST! they are good reels and a must have for this area but they will go down and that way i have two; one for back up.
@rockinbeats12 the bait is right in front of the fish? Its a pearl holographic stillwater smack-it 5 1/2 size works awesome. that area is not a boat are however so fishing from the shore is your only hope. Also thanks.
@zachmac17 If i keep all my fish there would be no fish left? :) No, the population is on the decline up here and i have been catching & releasing since 2008. Moreover these is a but breeder and even if the mortality rate for catching & release is 8% its better than 100%. Also big fish are full of PCB's so on when i do keep a fish its a smaller 28-30 inch fish. As for the clothing? if i was wearing waders here i would be dead. Is better to be cold than dead and its fun when you feet turn blue?
Just out of curiousity... You said it was a 42'' length and a 21'' girth... by math its 30pounds, nice catch! Whats the formula you used to figure out the weight?
@EphinEcko First thanks and It a fuzzy math but its better than bring her back to the bait shop and checking. I had one last year that was 48 and 28 girth i think and it came out to 40 pounds but it was skinny!
What a tremendous video, I really enjoyed watching that! That is proper 'hardcore' fishing, getting out amongst the waves!
Even better is the fact you caught that horse of a fish on a topwater lure! Absolutely fantastic, and even better was the C&R....minimal handling of the fish, a quick measure and back in the water in less than 2 minutes, hats off to you!
The only problem I find with topwater lure fishing is that any other type of lure fishing pales in comparison...nothing else hits the spot!
@3august3 That is what that is! so yes. I'm using a 10 foot st. croix legion with 30p power pro and the lure is a pearl holographic still water smack-it. Hope that helps and thanks for posting Franklin's Tower @ Radio City 10-31-80 !!! last good live version they did best was 77 Buffalo! :)
can never go wrong with a van stall and a st croix? my advise to you....dont ever go behind the fish while its in the water..best is to pull the leader untill your on safe grounds..countless times ive lost big fish by grabbin it by the gill in the water...thats just my suggestion...great vid though..!
@STRIPERBAY408 :) van stall and a st croix is right but I’m not using a leader?! Never need a leader on a beach so its even more dangerous than you thought! Never grab a fish by the gills, you grap it by the lip. (even more fun!) Thanks
@brianmoc nice! out here in our san fran beaches, braid is more the preffered line out here with 50-60 pound mono leader. but i guess there will be always a different way to fish, anywhere you go. i will make my way to the east coast one day and experience catchin 42 plus inchers on the beach. cuz out here 42 inches is consider big. hahah..cheers!
@STRIPERBAY408 I use 30 pound braid but one of the guys i fish next to uses 14 pound mono! with at 40 pound leader! now that's skill. both of us have a long why to go... :)
If you had to choose one lure to fish the surf what would it be. I am newly getting into fishing for bass with lures and I want to get a hold on the right stuff.
@FishOnFishing For this beach or any soft structure fishing area I would want a Still water Smack-it pearl Holographic 5 1/2. How is that? :) then get your self the 1 oz yellow and white pencil poppers and call it a day.
Nice video and nice fish. Few comments. 1. Its ok to put your van staal on the sand. 2. girth should be measured around the belly, not the gill plate. 3. revive the fish a little longer, with smaller back and forth movements. notice how he kind of just sat there after you flung him. Other than that, nice vid.
@MultiBeave Thank you, Yes, its ok to put you Van Staal in the sand now and then but they don’t make it all summer if I do that all year. As for the release I revive the fish and let the guy swim around in that pool for a bit longer way the out of gas the fishermen rested. I didn’t think many people wanted to see that? Thanks again
@Thelaxprofisherman i would if they sold the lure i used here! Winchester or 3 lanterns are awesome shops but there do not sell the still water smack-it?
@Thelaxprofisherman :) are you on drugs? :) its 42 almost was 43inchs i under estimated it and yes i'm just under 8 feet tall coming it at 6' 1 :) it 2d!
@Thelaxprofisherman NO that is not long beach...:) its Crane's beach about 1.50 miles down. If you can fish Cranes then you can fish rockport in the fall and never miss! Crane is not an easy beach to fish so don't get frustrated.. this guy was one of 4 that week so it can be done. "only get schoolies!" i have a list of lures that work at Crane's ect brianmoc.com
@surffishingvideos Have to release the fish now a days. Use to be a fish killer but had to stop about 3 years ago when the population started to drop!
Brian have you had any succes with the stillwater smack-it jr. Also just wondering if you use a shock leader with your lures or just tie the braided wire to your lures. Sorry for asking so many qestion but you make it look to easy. Thanks
I have tons of succes with the Jr smack-it in the spring. In the late summer I turn to the big version. Big fish target pray items that are 10-20% of there size so the Jr one is best used in spring when the fish are 20-36 inches. With these lures & where I fish them I do not use a leader. It’s a beach so the fish run straight out not down so no leader is needed & you get more action on the lure at the top of the cast i.e at longer distances without it. Hope that helps?
@dyedm10number1fan to me it looks like the st. croix mojo series. IMHO i think its not their best rod. the guides r too small for my liking and there is no rubber butt cap, just a small plastic one. Their triumph series on the other hand is cheaper, but has a nice buttcap, and has big guides. just replace its cork handle with a synthetic one
@xxxtremesportsxxx Thats a 9' St Croix Legend rod. I here you on the mojo big time! The guides are awesome for branded line! The Legend's guides allow the line to collects at the first guild rather than slowly collecting as line moves up the rod toward the tip. This means that the line does not hit ever guide on its way out as it does with loops guided poles. Less resistance on the line resulting in a longer cast!!! as for the butt cap? i'm fishing on a beach. ONE BIG NEGITIVE! IS THE RAP! Yes!
nice bid brian!! now, you are obviously fishing from a sand bar on the beach, but what are you casting at, is there like some kind of rock pile out there?? how long are you usually out fishing for??
@racooninabag No rocks on this beach its all sand bars. so i'm playing the current that moves between them. Look at the sand bars as rocks on this beach and you will find your spots. Normal fishing times are 3-4 hours. this day it was one hour.
brian - that is an awesome video - great fish man but even greater fisherman! that's quite a committment on your part to wade in and out of those deep troughs to get a cast into fishable water, and very dangerous. be careful man - 2 thumbs up!! great video!
Just buy yourself a longer rod and you won't have to wade out so far and risk your safety. Great video
