Thanks again for all your comments. It's my view that by far the best portrayal of Oscar Wilde was by Stephen Fry in the 1997 British production. However, this movie was a special request and we love honouring those as much as we can. AH
Though Finch is a brilliant actor, thought he underplayed the role. Peter O'Toole would have been brilliant, not sure if he was film acting at this time(1960). But wonderful film to watch...thanks for loading!!
Even with all the perceived flaws listed by some of the commentators, this is a monumental, thoroughly enjoyable movie, which is adorned by deeply textured acting performances, one simply couldn't find nowadays in more contemporary creations, which in comparison, feels sketchy, or truncated. Yet saying all those good things, the viewer who hasn't studied the legal case should be warned: This is a feature production and not a documentary.
A brilliant, authentic performance by Lionel Jeffries as the Marquis of Queensberry. On the other hand, Peter Finch was miscast in the role of Wilde. Robert Morley was shooting another version of the Oscar Wilde trials in 1960 - he would have been a better character - but the Finch version was rushed to beat the release of the other.
@Hakim.... We are 10% of the population we are born this way, and proud to be so.
we are everywhere, and those stereotypes you despise are only 1%, we dont have to infiltrate anywhere, we are already there and always have been, just like people called john and people with ginger hair, society is a broad spectrum not matter how much you try to see it as two dimensional, good or bad, nice or not nice, get a life!
@dshuggans Care not for what they say. They epitomise all that is despicable and humourless. Saying this as a straight man, I will defend to death your right to love those worthy of it.
And also for Oscar Wilde and Stephen Fry, both of whom have gifted me insurmountable joy.
@WarAgainstCliche Are you sure you're "straight"? Then why do you seem afraid to say heterosexual--if that's what you are. Homosexuals hide behind the euephemism of "gay" heterosexuals don't need to hide behind eupemisms. They don't need to march in parades flaunting what they are. There again who needs to when we know how we got here.
@Fingalful I'm quite sure my girlfriend can attest to that. And well done, I didn't know you had information pertaining to how all homosexuals and heterosexuals think. Do you know when I get up to brush my teeth too?
@dshuggans except there's no way to know what percentage of the population identifies as non-straight, let alone how many of them fit stereotypes. I don't see which stereotypes you're referring to, anyway, since hakim didn't mention any (unless "infiltrating the government" is a new one).
either way, as a non-straight man who fits quite a few stereotypes, it's always nice to know the rest of my community would willingly throw me under a bus for their political convenience.
BTW, thanks for posting this, I hope you post some other good ones, I found the 9200 greatest movies list and I'm trying to conquer it. And after this one, I have 8936 more to go!
I have been looking for this movie on DVD forever and I can't believe I just sat here and saw it on You Tube. THANKS SOOO MUCH AND KEEP POSTING! Awesome channel.
This Oscar seems a bit oldish to me. Bosie is perfect and looks hot, gay, and nasty. Love it- Im in love. Queensberry looked like a mummy, but then again the actor is about 100 yrs old. Lots of stuff that DIDN'T happen for real, but in all almost accurate. I am totally into Wilde!

I never have thought that Peter Finch was miscast as Oscar Wilde. Although i have seen the Robert Morley version, I think both films stand up well.

I didn't realise that John Fraser (Bosie) was himself a woopsie.

@dshuggans Some (many more than 10%) are born witless, and doubtless many of those, too, are proud.

Some serious miscasting here: Jeffries, as ever, sounds like a butler; Finch looks like a provincial solicitor. Only Fraser is remotely convincing.
