However, he "sabotaged" the battle, filling his cannons with straw instead of cannon balls :). And part of the tribute to the Ottoman empire included soldiers. So yeah, we were part of the Turkish war machine, whether we like it or not.

Granted, we paid tribute to be left the F*** alone, but when the turks tried to conquer us, well, they failed. Check out Mircea the Elder(Battle of Rovine), or Vlad the Impaler, or Stephen the Great(Battle of Vaslui), the latter two having defeated armies of 100k turks with only about 30-40k people.
