  • i found the same bird and taken care of it but mine is just a really small baby

  • @salar121 lovely! and how is it doing?

  • very lucky bird

    I also like your woodpile

  • Hi tree - Yes, it's a big woodpile in the summer:) We heat exclusively with wood, so it's not quite as big a pile at this point in the winter though!

As for the waxwing, yes it was lucky I got to it before the cats did. As it happens, same thing happened with a male cardinal just a few days ago. I held him and examined his precious beauty closely before he recovered and flitted away.

  • Awesome video! I especially liked how you showed off that yellow band...I didn't notice that on the ones I saw... I was too focued on their black and white masks! Such a beautiful bird! Wish they visited more...So happy you were able to rescue it:)

  • Thank you for the nice compliment, and yes, I was very happy see a waxwing up close and personal, although it's too bad this one had to go through such hard knocks first!

Been watching your vids and have thoroughly enjoyed all that I've seen so far! It's obvious you appreciate nature, and have a good eye for the small natural wonders of this world. Keep up the good work - very nice vids! indeed :)

  • Hi TOK - We don't have currawongs here, so I looked it up online. They look like good-sized birds. How in the world did it's head get through such a small hole? Or was it a baby? I've rescued quite a few birds around my house, mainly because they tend to fly into the window glass.

  • Thanks for helping him. I never seen a Cedar Waxwing in person only in books.

  • Thanks! The first time I saw ever saw them was here in OH in early spring. After a thaw period, we had had a freeze which created a thin layer of ice to form on the tree branches & buds. Walking by a sugar maple, I noticed some movement up in it - a flock of waxwings had taken up temporary residence! They were so busy drinking the sugary water that dripped from the buds, that they were totally oblivious to me, and I was able to get really close! Such gorgeous birds. Truly a magical moment!

  • was it a juvinile?

  • yes it was!

  • lol! I wasn't sure if the 'beaking' he gave me was a TY! But I'm sure he was happy to fly away:)

  • How very sweet...also love your text to the right.

And, thanks so much for subscribing!

  • Running into glass is a big problem with birds. We don't understand it. Thanks for being a cool human.

  • Well that was a cool video. People should be nice to birds.

  • It's lovely, such a pretty lil face! I'm glad you were able to save it. :)

  • Very spunky too! Did you notice it gave me a good "beaking" as I set it down?

  • Lol, no I hadn't noticed that at first. I just rewatched and saw that.

  • Very cool. Thanks for the tips on how to help them after window impact. I have the deck chicken wired so the cat can't get to the ones that bash into my largest windows.

  • When you have cats, it's always a worry about the birds isn't it? Love the "defense" measures you've taken:), although it might not work at my place because my cats spend most of their time on the deck whenever they go outside!

  • Yes i do! very perky cute little birds with black caps that stay through the year here.

Some Cedar waxwings nest here too, but I've mostly seen flocks in the fall and early spring when they seem to be just passing through. I don't see them often, and was quite surprised to find this young one when I did.

  • Precious little birdie.Boy do you have a gift with wildlife.

  • That's very nice of you to say! Not sure that it's so much a gift, as much as being in the right place at the right time! I gotta be on my toes to rescue critters before the cats get to them :)

  • Yeah I go to a college with tons of rabbits but most of the new ones are gone by fall cause the cats in the area kill them. But the caretakers said , but there are the invulnerables ..the ones that have survived the cats and humans for years and years...those are the ones that are named.

  • Thanks Cindy, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It just proves that I do occasionally take breaks from YT to do other useful things!

  • How fortunate for us the bird met you and not the cats first. Lovely video thank you for sharing it. I've held a few stunned birds because of windows and it's always a thrill to be that close to a wild thing. Cheers, Lesley

  • This little one was lucky, although I'm sorry to say it doesn't always work out this way. Fortunately, my lazy cats are more likely to go for critters like chipmunks which bounce back from a capture more easily than birds (if I intervene in time!).

  • It seems amazing to me to think you have chipmunks living nearby! Just love YouTube for making the real world accessible. L

  • Maybe I'll show some of the other wildlife in my backyard! I tend to take it for granted most days.

  • I think there are many people who watch here who would love to see it. It's very different from watching on a nature programme, actually seeing the differences in where we live. I'm going to hit the orange button in case you do anyway. L

  • Thanks! Bring on the wildlife!

  • Beautiful! So glad this popped up for me! (Haven't been watching much...) This is such a treat and is inspiring for me to post a recent hike that I keep avoiding. ~peace

  • Please post the hike vid! Here in Ohio, the leaves will be colorful soon, but in autumn there's nothing like seeing the brilliant foliage on the rolling mountains and foothills of PA! This is the time of year when I miss my home-state the most!

  • I love birds and Waxwings are awesome! I birdwatched a lot years ago. 8-)

  • I grew up in rural PA, and spent much time birdwatching as a kid. I don't have so much time to bird watch anymore, but I'm still fascinated (and appreciative) of them!

  • Ha! I'm from PA, too! 8-)

  • cool, which part?

  • Lehigh Valley area. How about you?

  • Blair and Centre counties!

  • I found that "Lesa" commented exactly what I was going to comment... so keep on making progress "vloging hand" :)

  • i hear ya :))))

  • :)!

  • So lovely! :)

Right before you mentioned your cats I thought I really hope no birdy will ever enter here, it'd break my heart if my cats caught him.

I loved it how he didn't fly away right after you released him... I just hope he was feeling alright!

  • Hi Paola, I don't think he was feeling 100% right when I put him outside, but about half an hour later he did take off. In my experience, this is fairly typical response time...they seem to need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes before they can fly away.

  • Thanks Angie...the hard part is keeping the bird and my cats seperated during the recovery time!

  • : )

  • smiles back at ya!

  • OMG! It's YOU!

Well, your hand. And a bird in the hand. I love how he puffed up trying to be brave. :)

  • Hahahahahahaha...just wait, the left hand may be next:) Or...maybe...I should just cut to the chase and do a vid version of the hokey pokey? lol

First he grabbed my finger with his beak when I tried to set him down. Then when his crest perked up and he puffed those feathers, I knew he was going to be okay. Hopefully he's back to devouring pokeberries once again!

  • Well don't wait another three months for that hokey pokey or chicken dance thingy!

...and what on earth are 'pokeberries'??
