To be more precised, REFERENDUM WAS INITIATED by a British man: IAN MARTIN. He is THE Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the East Timor Popular Consultation and Head of the UN Mission in East Timor May-November, 1999.
Australia was under the British Queen Elizabeth of England. So actually, Britain was the architect of the separation of ET from Indonesia.

If most of the 800,000 population of East Timor want to separate from Indonesia such as the voted result, ( 78% separate = 624.000 people and 22% remain joined to Indonesia = 176.000 people),
Then why did there were some 500,000 refugees ( 62 % residents ) who crossed over to Indonesia and asked for protection to Indonesia from the pro-independence and Fretilin in East Timor in the beginning during separation from Indonesia.

According to an official report from the UN, during the rule of fretilin for 3 months since there was vacuum in the government of East Timor between September - November, Fretilin take over and have been done the massacre of some 60,000 civilians (mostly women and children) which been refused the communist . Previously portugal provide at least 40,000 weapons for Fretilin before leaving East Timor .That weapons are used by FRETILIN ( PORTUGUESE DESCENDANTS ) TO SLAUGHTER THOUSANDS OF TIMORESE.

So now many of timoreses feel remorse,because the government was held by the descendant of portuguese,Indonesia was not invaded the east timor,but to carry pickaback of natives struggle (UDT,APOEDETY,etc) from colonozation and suppression of portuguese and their descendant(Fretilin ). Xanana ,horta and many other is not a native timorese.Aussie didnt care about timorese wealthy ,they came for oil and gas.

Actually East Timorese and Indonesians benefited each other from trading centuries ago. But the Portuguese destroyed that connection in the 16th century. That's why it's easy for the Brits/the Aussies to incite rebellions in E.Timor.
The US involvement further complicates the situation in Indonesia. In the future, the Indonesians must convince E. Timorese that the best option to escape from misery is to join with Indonesia again.

Because countless East Timorese has sacrificed their lives for Indonesia. No matter what Apodeti and UDT invited Indonesia to free ET from Fretilin. Fretilin has support from Australia at that time. Another fact is that in 1999 almost half of the country moved to Indonesia to beg Indonesian government not to abandon them.
Don't believe in the UN referendum 1999. It's full of British (Aussies) and US intervention.

The Timorese hated the Aussies (the Brits Empire) for the fact that she abandoned E.T/Timor Leste in WWII. More than 40,000 was slaughtered by the Japanese because of that. That's almost half of their population got wiped out. The Brits stabbed the Timorese in the back because they never came back for help.

If I hold power in the government I will spit on that money and then burn all of it. We can't accept bribe from the US and the Brits (World Bank). Money from World Bank has brought nothing but misery to Indonesians and many countries of the world. The Timorese are no exception.

watched the movie last week , and a very accurate depletion of the terrible slaughter of the 6 Aussies and the thousands of east timories murders in 1975 , while the united nations and Australia done nothing to stop the killings . For 35 years the Indonesian government are still trying to protected the murderers of this war crime , while Australia sit on there hands and do nothing about it . Justice need to be done .
