Really good stuff. Personally I always saw many of these theorists as being confused, including Bazin and Kracauer. They constantly contradict themselves in their works, what do you think?
@frexmex211 I think that Cavell is faily consistent, but as a theorist I find that both Bazin and Kracauer have contradictory ideas. The first time I read Bazin on montage, I thought he was saying it was essential to film, but later I realized he was saying it was an artificial language that film did not really need. I suppose you just have to approach them sympathetically, but at the end of the day your theory of cinema has to go beyond them both and be your own.
