I was at the Winter Gardens Gig In Bournemouth the same week. I heard at the time that it was the first time they got through it in one go. Does anyone rember the dates of these gigs? January...1972
I was at this gig, it really was a fantastic experience. It was the first live preview of DSOM and the equipment broke down after about 20 mins so they had to stop, went off stage then came back with Atom heart Mother. They got through the whole dark Side set the following night at the Rainbow but this was a truly magical night.
i love seeing footage of the Floyd fans in the 70s because i was born in 93 so i wish i was part of that generation much more than this one. but at least we got the internet to find all the great recordings!
I wish I was in the audience watching this stunning performance by the Pink Floyd but unfortunately I was born in 1985 I just wish I was born earlier then.
I think the biggest insult of the video was at the end, seeing "Rod Stewart and The Faces". The Faces used to be The Small Faces and headed by Steve Marriott, who Rod can't begin to hold a candle to. Steve Marriott is the greatest white blues singer this world has ever seen and ever will see. RIP, Steve.
Roger's a bit of a dick, but handled Syd's absence adequately.
torrents and you'll find all the gems nobody has. This was a bootleg and not an official video release, so not in record shops. I am pretty happy to have around 20 DVDs full of stuff before DSOTM (which i prefer)...
I keep hearing these 'authorities' telling me when the Floyd gig at the Dome was THAT I WENT TO, and informing me that I didn't actually see the concert that I saw (that's what it feels like anyway).
These geniuses read some bull in a book, maybe even Mason's book I don't know, but they are misinformed. The original poster starts the tour at Brighton, I was there, I met the band and got a drumstick, and I remember it. 1st DSOTM, fact!
"Roger borrowed the idea" ?? It was the band of Syd Barrett, and the stupid text might as well be missing -- still it would be at least as great, maybe even much better !
Nick Mason is in my opinion the best drummer besides John Bonham .
Nick Mason is a drummer, along with King Crimson's drummer, who inspired the great Neil Peart of Rush. Nick Mason ties with Neil in my book for first place; third goes to Stuart Copeland. Matt Cameron gets 4th. Steve DiStanislao gets 5th.
@SenorSpode Ya forgot Bonham dude or does number of drums dictate your list. Bonham played a 3rd of what Peart sets up....Sounded like double his set. Its your book you read it.But you can't label best musicians. Try favorites there are players you've never heard of that would qualify
@olbuzz I have no criteria for hardware quality or quantity. All I care is how it moves me. Bonham was good, undoubtedly...he simply didn't move me like Neil Peart, Matt Cameron or Stuart Copeland...or for that matter, Steve DiStanislao. Neither of us are obligated to adhere to a set criteria of drum gods, so why are we busting each others' chops?
This is from June 29th 1972. They returned to Brighton for two extra shows after problems at the January show. The second June show was filmed by the band.
I was at the concert and remember some German people handing out papers advertising that "you can buy this concert on album", which was a shock, knowing that it was only just finished!
Great gig, and I was leaning on the stage for most of the second part (after the intermission and after they had done Dark Side).
Triangle Records - Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Rehearsals PYCD 065-2 - it doesn't have Set the Controls due to time restraints. At the very beginning on Speak to me you can hear someone (near the tape recorder) saying "F#@King 'ell did ya see that" Totally amazing"just as the light show started - it must have been spectacular. Wish I was there.....
Brighton Dome June, 1972. In 1973, Rick Wright added a couple of Mini-Moog synthesizers and was clean shaven. In 1973, David Gilmour was starting to grow his beard. Also, Nick had either a 7-piece version of drum kit he played in this clip or the now legendary "waves" drum kit he used from May, 1973 to July, 1977.
The filmmakers cut off the song. That's annoying, but I guess it happens all the time. Floyd's songs are quite long generally and people don't seem to like that.
Set the Controls is shades of what Waters would become. He was stepping aside from the whimsical lyrics of Take Up Thy Stethoscope and trying to write something profound. His lyrics may have been lifted from the I Ching (sic?), but not all of them were and he strung them together to make this particular narrative.
This was filmed at the Brighton Dome in June of 1972. This venue was too small to be Earls Court as it seated 20,000 people whereas the crowd mainly clapped after the song here. I have Earls Court ROIO 1973 and the crowd were like gladiators.
I'm going against this because I think this is Earl's Court. I was at that show and it was here that they used the burning gong for the first time. hard to imagine British health and safety regulations allowing them to do that today.
Interesting you find it boring, I thought it all went together quite nicely.
Rythm sections arent made like that anymore, 3 notes per position in the verse.. I think its an evolution from what they had before, they would say that Pink Floyd isnt something you can hum to.... but here its something you can hum and trip to with imagination expanding lyrics.
Can anyone tell me though, did they get the title "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" from somewhere else?
I just uploaded HD version of this very same video from Dark Side of The Moon bluray with FLAC audio so enjoy

to 4ginpaws...I did a bit of research.
Brighton was the first night & the equipment broke down.
Portsmouth was the second night & there was a power failure.
Bournemouth (23.1.72) was the firt time they did it all the way through.
The set of Rainbow Theatre gigs were after these.

Haunting staff. Psichedelia at its best.

I say they are not from the book of changes.
I dont even think Waters was into the I Ching, I thought Syd was.
And I think psychedelia is far from over, or even begun.
