Back in the days you had to solve riddles but it was challenging and fun. today's game you go in circles to find a key that opens up a box that has a key to open up the door to get to the place where you can find the door to the next key to pass that level It just gets to damn boring for me.
@CmdrofNine I wish there were more puzzles and stuff too. Sure, it sucked back in the day when you or your friends couldn't figure something out so you were forced to stop playing.. but now we have the internet, so there's no good reason, save the new young audience with zero attention span. :P
There is a rom patch of this game, where you can play as Error with more... explicit text, and different layout. But you need lunar ips and this to patch it..
"When all else fails use fire"- in the zelda game links awakening link gets a fire rod and the game says "you got the fire rod! Yeah! BURN BABY BURN!" XD lol
The song at 5:20 reminds me of heavy metal that I listen to with the scales, and that is so sick cause everytime I listen to metal I think of video games lmao!
yeah this game took me a long time to beat , like 5 years, but when i beat it, i realize that my gaming skillz improved tremendously, games from today now look soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy....

@Segasarge *wide eyes nods yes* Definitely. Games back then were soooooo much harder. I got my ass kicked back then so much. Now a days, games are fairly simple.
@funkjaw It took me about 4 years, I didn't have the cartdrige and I had to rent it and indeed I only beat it after I got access to the inter back in 1999 and downloaded a walkthrough. The first Zelda game took me 2 years, again, I didn't have the cart and I had to get it from the game shop from time to time.
It's 5:45 am and I should've been to bed hours ago, but I can't stop watching these videos...tomorrow's going to be a bitch, but watching these vids is worth it!
I never played that many games during the NES era when I was around 7 or 8 but this is one of the few games I have fond memories of, especially the music. It truly immersed me in the game and I felt like I was in the game. Good times.
This game drove me mad. It was so hard and I was 10. Damn those caves. My nephew can't grasp the concept of difficult when he plays his ridiculously easy and forgiving games on his Playstation 3. That's the generation of the 80's, we learnt persistence.
Seeing this again, takes me WAY BACK to my childhood. Especially the tune that starts at 1:22. Makes me feel a bit melancholy, wishing I could re-live those good times.
One of my favorite all time NES games, and my 2nd favorite zelda game, 2nd to A link to the past. OOT coming probly 3rd or the Orignal nes zelda its a toss up.
@ilovecardj Agree completely. I'd put the Zelda games in the same order. I'd put Link's Awakening for GB before the original though not sure if it would be before OOT or not.
I have no idea why people hate on this zelda. I love the way this game plays out. Every enemy has a certain strategy to kill them the most efficiently. In most other Zelda games a lot of enemies you can just hack and slash. Also, I love the leveling system; it really brings up the replay value. You can try for level 1 Attack/Magic/Life runs or try to get through without some of the spells.
<3 this Zelda. It's my favorite of the series although OoT really comes close.
This is pure EPICNESS!! The 1st 2 Zelda's are amazing!! Everything after that doesn't compare.
Jesus though, I used to get so pissed off at this game when I was younger. AH shit, who am I kidding, I STILL get pissed at video games LOL! But I love them all the same, and I know better not to throw my controllers hehe
I just love the Zelda series! My faves were Link to the past, Links awakeing, Orcarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Despite that im actually an old school gamer. But as a kid couldn't understand legend of Zelda but Zelda 2, I got far in but couldn't beat till bout 4 years ago when I bought Zelda collections. I still have to beat seasons, ages, twighlight princess and.........well hmm...the one for DS.
Timeless game, and the best in a great Series. Darker, more challenging than the rest, a true adventure-quest game. Spent countless nights limping back to town to save with half a health bar left..
Christmas '88 - unwrapped NES with Super Mario/Duck Hunt and the Legend of Zelda II: Adventure of Link. That gold cartridge looked and felt like a treasure. Stayed up all night with my dad playing, he bought Legend of Zelda and Kid Icarus a couple days later. Best Christmas ever :)
Same, I remember forcing my mom to let me open presents at 2 o' clock in the morning because I just knew she got me zelda2. I ended up playing it all night & slept most of that Christmas day away.
This was my favorite game ever released on the NES, I have gone back & replayed it a bunch of times. Definitely the most challenging Zelda, but also most memorable. Anybody who didn't like this game should really give it another chance.
LOL, I got my first NES the same year, actually Christmas Eve '88. I was 8 years old. Mario/Duck Hunt. All night, me and my brother played it. By the time 8am came to open presents, we didnt want to stop playing. Not long afterwards we went out and got Zelda and Zelda II. I absolutly LOVE Zelda II, its my favorite game in the series as well. I agree dude. The Christmas of 1988 was THE BEST EVER!
Me too, I got Zelda II for Christmas. The gold cartridge! That game lasted forever, it was amazing. I listed to this kind of music when i am working, it's takes me right back!
I never played the CD-i games, soo.... Well I love Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, and Link's Crossbow Training, but Zelda II is just a clueless game, thats all
You know, this doesn't seem like such a bad choice in retrospect. I mean, all of the Zelda games are in 3D nowadays so it's not like they stuck with the original format all of this time.
I find that Nintendo was "experimenting" with the format of the Zelda series... Once they got to LttP, that format stuck... (Why eslse would the first three games in the series feel so different from one another?)
I had a blast playing this game. The final battle with you shadow is still one of the most amazing and challenging AI fights I've ever seen in any game. I really enjoyed this game just as much as the first one, music and all.
@stepminestepminestep Ganon used to scare me so bad when i was little playing this game XD What a pisser laughing at you when you die in this game! =P
I may be in the minority but this was my favorite Zelda for the NES..such innovation with tthe side scrolling and the exp points. Played it for the first time in @ 20 years and it felt like I had never put down the controller, amazing how a fantastic game like this burns a place in your memory.
I am one of the lucky few whose cartridge battery didn't lose that much power so I actually still had an old school save-game still stored on mine. I wanna guess-timate it at about 15 years old. *tear*
I agree with both of these comments. I am also in the minority by enjoying this game more than the original. I had this thick pink walkthrough book for it too and it was so hard trying to keep the pages open while figuring out where the fuck to go.
This game is TOUGH. I had such a hard time playing through it that I gave up and didn't look back for a while. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game and the music is rad, but it's just so damn hard. Trying to get that jump-and-slash method so precise so you don't get hit back is one of the hardest things ever.
My favorite of the Zelda games. Zelda II, than Zelda I, than Zelda III (Link to the Past). This game brings back memories of being a kid in the 1980s. The music was awsome in this game. It's the type of game you can play with the lights off to the sounds of wind chimes or crickets. Nothing in modern compares.
This game is a lot harder, challenging, and entertaining than the first. Especially since it at least has several sound tracks unlike the first one haha.
One of those games i've still yet to beat... just GETTING to the Great Temple ate up my lives, so i had nothing i could do when i actually GOT there. GAH.
I have "The Legend of Zelda" and "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" golden cartridges. I bought them when they were first released and I'm glad that I still own them.
I didn't play this much, but I remember the music being really cool. I especially loved the surprise twist on the original theme song.
Man, it's so great to see and hear all these games! It's nice for when you wanna be nostalgic about the ones you played/heard, but helpful for the ones you DIDN'T. Thanks Garudoh! ^_^
Between the music and the video you've really captured the nostalgia from the entire game in one little package. This is like the eighth one I've listened to. Amazing work.
WOW! I haven't heard this music in literally decades and I still remember it!

Really good Zelda II skills. This is by far my favorite Zelda in the series, and some of my favorite songs!

That second song is so great. Couldn't get enough of that.

whats the name of the third song that played?

While largely regarded as inferior to the first Zelda game, I have to say the music in this game is better then the first game by a long shot.

This music is a trip down memory lane back to my innocent childhood!

Thanks for this blast into the past. I'm 33 years old and I had forgotten all about this game, and it was my favorite. Thanks again.

I loved this Zelda played the shit out this one.

Between the music and the video you've really captured the nostalgia from the entire game in one little package. This is like the eighth one I've listened to. Amazing work.

Thanks man.

I remember playing just to get to the first palace to listen to the music, I liked its theme that much.

Great compositions, but -massive- overuse of the vibrato effect!
jpgray 3 years ago 4
What is the vibrato effect?
Senapse 3 years ago
A deliberate wavering of voice or string; hard to replicate on 8-bit machines (or any machine for that matter)
andrewfx51 3 years ago
With all of those long notes it'd probably be irritating to listen to for long without the vibrato.
Garonyldas 3 years ago 2
Yeah, well... except it's used a lot on shorter ones too. But point taken.
DavCube 2 years ago
hell, I appreciate that they tried. this truly was an experimental 8-bit game. kudos to Nintendo, and kudos to you garudoh for uploading this series.
