  • wat?

  • fairly similar to the motor on my push mower.

  • thank you for your replay. very well appreciated.

  • Thanks for your reply

  • Some ships have 2 main engines driving one propeller via a gearing system. In that case you may consider one engine as a backup. But Most large vessels only have one.

  • thats good

  • Is there a spare engine on some ships when something goes wrong especially in the middle of a monster wave and what does it feel inside the engine room when ships encounters a heavy storm?

  • Ships dont need spare engines cause their engines run at very low RPM, not enough to cause any serious fatigue

  • they keep spare cylinders and liners.

  • @05clenharth,thanks for your reply

  • @pensoken, if something goes wrong in the middle of a monster wave, you're pretty fucked up no matter what kind of spare systems you have. It takes some time to start an engine as big as that.

Some ships have "take-me-home" emergency propulsion systems that guarantee a safe return to port in case of, for example, main engine failure. For example the shaft generator can be used as an electric motor to rotate the propeller, powered by the auxiliary generators.

  • @pensoken

Allmost all ships have only one engine for the obvious reason: Its cheaper.

If there's more than one reason it's rarely for backup but for technical reasons.

For example: supliers have 2 or more engines and propellors for better manoeuvring. Passenger ships have more engines with large electrical power plants to adapt to changing conditions like sailing , manoeuvring and being alongside to facilitate load changes.

feels like shit in a storm.

  • Give me steam, any day!!! =Stefan=

  • Well..... the ship has 3 boilers aswell, so you can have your steam!

  • Beautiful. This is roughly around 30 rpm at dead slow. That's large engines running and i love it!!! :)

  • start whit compressed air?

  • Yes starts with air , max 30 bar , minimum ca 7 bar

  • MAN B&W is today a danish company. Burmeister og Wain Copenhagen. MAN was earlier german.

  • It's more that B&W used to be danish - MAN is and was always a germen company, and MAN now owns B&W, ;)

  • That thing runs quietly.

(oben seitlich vom Auslassventil)?

  • Sorry my Dutch not good Ich spreche entweder Deutsch oder English. I must say this is one of the most quietist maschines i have heard yet!, Good ole MAN! (I believe it was Maschinenfabrik Augsburg/ Nürnberg (MAN) that had build Dr. Rudof's first or second motor! No)?

  • 45 toeren stationair, dat red de mijne niet! (60 toeren is het matje bij mijn deutz 428!) (550 max)

Max rpm is ca 111.

  • Is dit ding nou zo stil of wat?

  • Dead slow is deze motor inderdaad erg stil, draait slechts 45 rpm.

  • you mean it was roled over from 2-6 and then started at 6. the engon dose not start till after the start air stops

  • It starts when you apply starting air, thats why it's called starting air.

When the starting air stops and the puncture valve closes the engine is running and the starting has finished.

Where I live we call this kind of discussion "looking for nails on shallow water". My daughter is expert in this field some period of the month, but I'm better at it.

  • Its obviously just being powered by air or something.

  • No, it starts after 2 seconds and stops after 34 seconds, but the hissing sound between 2 and 6 seconds is the starting air.

  • Uuuummmm So did it start????

  • Yes of course this type of engine never fails to start

  • ahum??
