  • @MyShawnLaneVideos xD thanks you too

  • Though Shawn doesn't seem to do that in thins clip, It looks like alternate picking

  • MEMPHIS! invented RNR!

  • Yngwie Malmsteen dislikes this video

  • He looks like Jack Black in this Video XD

  • Remember, you'll never be able to do that.

  • O_O

  • did he seriously just say "then"

  • @BombsonBicycles Haha, yeah.... i left that in so people can see that it wasn't just sped up, lol. :D

  • @BombsonBicycles / Then I quit!

  • @michaels2boys "THEN"....i do too!!

  • HOLY SHIT

I REALLY LOVE THE SHAWN LANE PLAYING !!!!

  • I most definitely shit my pants...

  • Not to do with this technique, but I accidentally did something that sounded a heck of a lot like one of his licks. When picking, I forced myself to focus on my shoulder and try not to move my wrist to pick. It gave the ole Shawn Lane pick attack noise and it was as if I were just speed picking on one string and carefully moving my arm instead of widening the picking of my wrist during the jump. Try it out. This particular technique is just like he shows, keep the neck up high/elbow in.

  • And then..

  • Try using 4 notes per string and be amazed how clearly you see the fretboard after a while, at the same time you get away from those boring position boxes!

  • im pretty sure hes basically sweep picking faster than i can, except with three notes per string!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3x faster than me!!!!!!!!1 hahahahaha

  • Sorry, got mixed up with these vids for a moment.

He's not actually sweep picking here.... just picks the first note on each string, then hammers (or pulls of, depending on the direction he's going in) the next 2 notes.

  • i know it. i was just messing around, that is to say, i meant hes going up and down six strings faster than i can sweep but with 3 notes per string. the point was to convey that he is going 3 times faster than me...literally haha. i know what he is doing here beleive it or not, but thank you anyway.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Yeah...at 20 notes a second...O_O

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos

it looks like he is alternate picking it to me, which he was capable of doing.

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos Thats The cool part about shawn, he picks scales faster than other people can sweeppick and STILL apply it in a good way

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos well that's basicly a sweep picking, 'cause he's just strumming once every string pattern...it's a sweep, but not a sweep arpeggio...

  • @MyShawnLaneVideos I guess sweep picking is a bit fuzzily defines, but what you described is what I usally call sweep picking. On one string you may either just pick one note or you may pull/hammer more. The sweep is the motion on the picking, so that's how I define it: a consecutive motion in a single direction, not picking any string more than once. :)

  • @charvinaldo He's using leagato (:

  • @SpikemyGuitar i do know it. that is why i said basically. its not sweeping cuz hes doing downstrokes on each string if i recall correctly, but the point was, tripple speed

  • gotta love the S series!

  • to quote Paul Gilbert, "Shawn Lane, the most terrifying guy ever!!".

  • its actually "Shawn Lane, the most terrifying guy of all time." but yeah haha he is!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cgijfk I know I'll take shit for this, but Paul still has his beat, though. In certain aspects anyway. Everyone has their bag.

  • chromaticly ascending major scale 3nps string lick.....i never thought that would sound so cool!

  • is this picking every note? sounds too smooth to be alt picking

  • For this perticular lick in this video he is picking just the first note on each new string.

  • okay cool, it looked ;like economy picking to me at first. But hes basically sweep picking it? it sounds insane whatever it is.

  • Not necessarily sweep picking either, just individually picking the first note on each string.

I suppose you could call it sweep picking if Shawn was resting the pick against the next string each time, but he's definately making individual pick strokes here, in fact, i think he's even doing an Up-stroke each time during the ascending part of it, whereas he would have to be doing down-strokes if it was sweeping (during the ascending part).

  • so your saying this is all upstrokes? I wish i had your knowledge of shawns exploits, must have helped improve your playing a great deal. Hows the website going btw?

  • do we know what particular scale he is using here? i thought it was major scale 1st position ascending chromatically but it obviously isnt. sounds diminished...

  • Look up this video :

Shawn Lane - "How to Develop an Outside Sound"

He plays this same lick at the start of that video... it's the first lick/exercise he does (ex.31). He plays it fast and then slow, so you can see what he's doing. He basically plays the diminished shape on each string except the B string, where he jumps from the G to the top E string.

The only difference is that in this video here, he repeats the lick a few times, but moving up a positon each time.

    Hope that helps.

  • love the way it ends with the word,, then.. pure talent..

  • such a typical SL lick lol

  • Lol, yeah, as "typical" as Shawn Lane can get!

  • definately off the planet!

  • INHUMAN... dude, that's inhuman...

  • who said that he was human? lol

  • @oilkills

Definitivamente Shawn no era humano, fue un fenómeno irrepetible y un adelantado. Es una pena que no sea tan popular como Malmsteen o Vai............Shawn fue el mejor, el simplemente tenía todo.

    RIP Shawn.
