  • t he Twintones should have been the hit but RCA screwed up and only released the song on an EP first, As soon as it had somr air play the lousy group the Playmates covered it.

  • As to the vote--Twin Tones version is my fav. Never even heard it until I started reading these posts. So, thanks. (too bad this version got all the play on most airwaves)

  • Real great 50s music I remeber it well. Her name was Rita

  • Seventh grade Friday night dances remembered.

  • @njva17420 WEREN'T THEY GREAY?? WHAT A TIME WE WERE LUCKY.

  • @crusher1944 Yes, certainly for the music.

  • Both The Twin-Tones & The Playmates versions are great. I'm glad that multiple performers back then recorded each others songs, why not ? With each version, there came a new hook or twist or maybe, just a little something different, but either way, the song being recorded was kept alive and fresh.

  • Most songs that we remember and like, usually have a connection with a special person or event in time. This song is a perfect example for me because Joann was the name of my first girlfriend back in 1958. The playmates made Billboards top 100 with this record which had good harmony and arrangement. They also had a hit with another song called "Beep Beep."

  • Brings back memories of when I was a teenager. WOW! Long time ago!

    Love the song!

  • I just love this 50s sound this song has to it!

  • Great 50's sound, Donny, Morey and Chic had a few other hits as The Playmates, with 'Wait For Me', 'Don't Go Home', 'Little Miss Stuck Up' and not forgetting 'Beep Beep'.

The 1950's had the best variety of music, and you could understand all of the words.

I'm glad that I was around then to hear it, and it's still sounding good over 50 years later.

  • ican remember seeing my parent's dance to this and some drum solo called 'wipe out'!!! i guess i'm dating myself[you know what i mean]...

  • I've looked for this song for years, My name was picked out of a hat at the hospital, My mom said this was popular because it was a

song on the radio, I thought she was kidding

me, to make me feel better because may name was picked out by the nurses

  • I have been looking for this song to play at my parents 50th wedding anniversary-my dad loves this song and of course my moms name is Joanne!

  • I just love this song ,everything that is good about fifties music..........fabulous.

  • Jo.....................Aann

  • That's really cool!

  • I've loved this song for 50 years and here I am today married to Joan (almost Jo-Ann!)

  • Another GREAT forgotten oldie from The Playmates. Thanks so much for posting. It brings back wonderful memories from a great era.

  • Oh my!! I have this on a 45. That tells everyone my age.

  • American Bandstand ala late 1950s used to play a version of this song by a group known as The Twin Tones! I would love to hear the Twin Tones version and compare.

  • I uploaded the Twin-Tones version of Jo-Ann. Listen to both version and comment. I prefer the Twin-Tones version.

  • Wow, yes...Twin-Tones much better...Isn't the Twin Tones version the original? Also, didn't they debut this song on American Bandstand December '57? Thanks for this post!!!

  • Yes, the Twin-Tones version is the original from 1957 which The Twin-Tones performed this song on American Bandstand back then. I think the saxophone is awesome on this recording!

  • I love both versions, especially the saxophone riff. The Twin Tones version is on a kinescope of the December 16, 1957 American Bandstand show. Also check out a special chapter titled "Jo Ann" from Bruce Pollock's book "When Rock Was Young".

  • Jeszcze lepsze.

  • thanks for sharing. brought back such great memories of a much simpler and happier time in the world

  • Thanks for sharing...what great memories to a loooooong time ago when life was so much simpler...

  • This one really goes back a long time to when I was only 11 years old (about 200 years ago).

I don't know who the sessions singers were, but they sounded as angelic as any vibes today.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this GOLDEN TREASURE!

  • @VinDcator ROFL @ 200 years ago. Sure doesn't seem like 50+ y ago though

  • this song takes me waaay back to another time...just great memories of our fabulous fifties...hope that i'm not alone in remembering,,

  • This is one of the very 1st songs I sang along to, and danced to, in 6th grade, early, in '58. Her name was Dorothy Lynes, and oh, was she a knockout, in 6th Grade. What memories, and what a time, what a warm, wonderful, unforgettable, Time it was. Wolfsky9

  • @Wolfsky9 OH ME TOO LOVE IT

  • Great! Been a long time since I've heard this. KVS
