So which is better, StrikeForce, or GobSpark? The StrikeForce has a tinder compartment, but the GobSpark looks like it has a better grip. I would have tinder anyway, so I'm think the GobSpark.
i prefer to use the strikeforce kinda backwards from what you do there- try pulling the ferro rod away from the tinder and hold the striker side more or less still - seems to pull way more consistent sparks for me - catch your tinder the first try and save your rod!
I have to agree with you Adam, I have both and I prefer the Strike Force over the Blast Match for the very same reasons. The Blast Match is marketed as a one handed combustion device yet it is a bit troublesome to wield one handed. In an emergency situation it's a bonus to already have dry tinder provided. If I only had one good hand I'd place the tinder/kindling on the ground step on the handle of my knife and scrape the ferro on it's spine with my good hand, BOO-YAH one handed fire.
I like and use them both. I added a drop of crazy glue to the ceramic stiker in the blastmatch just to be sure it wouldn't fall out. I removed the wetfire tinder and packed the compartment of the strikeforce with tinderquik(you can jam in a lot), a teeny ferro rod, a couple of small pre threaded needles, and an exacto knife blade. Then I taped the compartment closed with a piece of duct tape.
I have a blast match and I just hate it. If the ground is soft that I'm pushing into, it just doesn't work well for me. Maybe I'm not using it right but I can say that it's not as easy to use as I thought it would be. I roll with a Swedish fire steel. Works great every time.
@enjoythewildUSA I too have found the same problem but its easily solved by simply putting a piece of tree bark or a thick stick on the ground an pressing onto that rather than the ground itself.
Well IMHO I'd pick the UST over the strikeforce, If I was air crew. For in aviation military or civilian it's not uncommon to have arm injuries after a crash that would make using any firesteel almost impossible. But the UST is no little angle as you mentioned it hard to open one handed and I've heard of numerous brakages. UST shouldn't get cheap on construction and improve the basic premise of the design.
@qmoor: I agree. I also use just a FireSteel Armageddon Junior with pre-drilled lanyard hole along with a Super Striker. Works excellent and is extremely simple. I use Kelty Triptease lightline as a lanyard because of it's reflective properties.
Hey Adam don't forget you can use your knife spine to strike the spark on a blast match also.
I do agree just a simple ferro rod is my preference. I actually went with the option of buying a nice long rod and cut it into a few sections to place in different bags.
I still love my blastmatch though and still use it regularly. Just not as much as a simple ferro rod and knife spine.
But the Blastmatch has less moving parts since it takes only one hand or one hand with a little help from the other. If one hand or arm is injured, you can still make fire.
More traditional ferro rods have more moving parts since you need the vigorous use of both hands/arms.
Just my .02 cents from a guy that hasn't used of the Ultimate Tech products.
Ive tried the blastmatch and a few low-cost alternatives and I think I'm with the majority here. I prefer a simple fero rod to the gizmos. I've wound up knocking my tinder over too many times with the one hand items!!!!!
I have the Strikeforce. Great survival tool. At first I found the stirker being awkward to use, (because of the cord length was too small), I just added a longer cord and that fixed the problem.
I've had the blastmatch for a while. Seems to me they would work better with the steel striker exposed so you can see if it's making contact with the rod. It's very awkward to use sometimes but still better than a cold night.
Great vid, Adam. Fire is a very personal thing when it comes to what tools people like. For me, the LMF Army is hard to beat, but I always try the newest and "bestest" thing that comes out. Lots of options out there.
If you throw sparks by pulling the blade toward you, there's less chance of displacing your tinder pile. Good comparative review - thanks for sharing...
it just seems like the strikeforce and the blastmatch are both reinventing the wheel, and completely worthless. why do we need a new "system" to light fire when a ferro rod is perfect? Light My Fire has some of the best ferro rods around, along with Firesteel brand ferro rods as well.
Great review.

LMF Army 3/8" rod for the size and weight it cannot be beat.
I can see how the BM and related would be good for a very inexpericed user

You can't go wrong with a basic ferro rod. Love my Swedish steel. Perfection in its simplicity.
