Russia kicked the most German ass in WWII. I think if we had gone to war with them in 1949 (or after, for that matter), we would have lost. Tenacious doesn't even begin to describe Russian fighting qualities. I always chuckle when I think of the analysts that said that Soviet pilots would be "demoralized by the adverse loss ratio" fighting US F-15's, etc. Did they ever read a history book? Like, about 1940 to 1945? The Nazis took out 1,000's of Russian pilots. And they stomped the Krauts.

Do you have any idea HOW we won in the Phillipines? We won by going in and commiting mass SLAUGHTER. We burned villages to the ground. There were standing orders to KILL EVERY MAN OVER THE AGE OF 10 when we went it. We executed thousands in retribution when the rebels killed our troops. Hell, you could say the Nazis in Poland and Russia followed our lead. We COULD go and eliminate the insurgency, but only if we're willing to fight like that again. And than what's the point?

What would the world say if we decided to brutally supress Iraqi rebels? We went over there to bring freedom and use atrocity to win? If you start down THAT path, you'd better go all the way. We started an unfair and unjust war with Spain and won. We told the Filipinos that if they rebelled against Spain, we'd give them their country. We betrayed them and slaughtered them. Which insurgency did we beat in South America? Not like it'ss full of armed rebels these days or anything.

The Finns are exceptional fighters, and Russia was unprepared for that war. Plus, the Finns merely kept the Russians out. They showed Stalin how hard it is to...eliminate a weaker but determined enemy. Funny how that works, huh? They might not have won without our stuff, but we SURE wouldn't have won if they had lost. US gives the guns, someone else does the fighting. Not that lots of US soldiers didn't die bravely, but if Russia had folded the war would have been over. Same for Britain.

I guess we could have won against the Russians in 1949. But at what cost? Besides, I thought the discussion was about the fighting merits of the 2 countries. Using Nukes against a non-nuclear country would just prove us cowards. Not to mention that it would create hatred for us that would make the Cold War seem nice and friendly. They WOULD have gotten nukes sooner or later, and I'll bet they'd be itching for some payback. Like I said, "winning" is a matter of perspective. Time changes matters.

dude. the U.S has good generals it's rules of war an so forth. your forgetting this is not WW2 every war is different. the military is doing it's job maybe if stupid politics would do there's. also Macarthur was fired for wanting to nuke China lol. I don't blame him but just keep in mind not every war is the same hell we fought for about 7 years putting down the Phillipine Rebels 95% of Americans forgot about that little war. also WW2 for the U.S was only 4 years an WW1 was only 1 year.

Military service should be required. it brings out team work,discipline and respect. unlike to days pop culture that heavily lacks in that area.

I actually agree about military service being good for you, and our kids needing to shape the fuck up. But WAR isn't so good for you. Even if you don't catch a bullet, you are scared for life. War will never leave, but it would be nice to have a war that MEANS something. I think Americans are just too good at smelling BS. We pulled together and won WWII, because we HAD to win. Funny, during wartime, this country just about WAS a Fascist state! But that's how we won. Where do you draw the line?

we are winning. an now what your comparing stuff to a movie? it's a fucking movie. Iraq is a fine example that were winning hell the Iraq's control tge Green Zone. an troops are being shifted towards Afganistan now.

Movies have a basis in reality. The point is that "winning" against an insurgency is way different than winning WWII. WWII=nation vs nation, army vs army. Treaty signed, war is over, we all go home. The "rules of war" are used. Armies have NEVER been good at fighting insurgencies. Well, not at BEATING them; the killing part is easy. Like a dog fighting a bear, only the dog wins if he can just stay alive until the bear gets sick of it (and goes home and says "I won! No dog can take ME down") LOL.

In WWII we wiped out infrastructure and pummelled the population, Nazi or not, into submission. In Iraq we're busy re-building the country and being nice to everyone. If the German people had resisted us after we occupied them, it could have lasted until who knows when. Luckily, they were scared of Russia. And they knew that they got what they had coming, and were tired. Even if we could solve this mess, that won't stop the retards who want to pull out tomorrow. Even if we COULD win, we WON'T.

Propaganda may be a Communist word, but that does not in any way mean that we don't use it. We just call it something nicer. I would think it was becoming obvious now. The US Army is top-notch and can take any army. But beating an army is very different from our job. Unless you clamp down martial law over the whole country (including the remote areas), you won't wipe them out. The Green Zone. Wow, we can sort of secure a perimeter against a bunch of poorly trained rebels! Impressive indeed.

I was just making a point, that superior power won't always win a war, especially if you mix politics in with it. War is more than just the shooting part. I was just reading about the F-117 that the Serbs shot down. We had stealth, so they "cheated" and used extra-long wavelength radar. War is the mother of invention, see?
