Easily better than some stodgy "pomp and circumstance" ceremony. But I would rather celebrate my accomplishment than just sit around being all stiff and solemn about it. Stanford has a nice balance: Wacky Walk at the big assembly, followed by more traditional departmental ceremonies (where you actually get your degree).
Total lack of class. I have never been more disappointed in a commencement ceremony. After busting my ass for a graduate degree, to walk into a dirty stadium in total chaos was not what I was expecting from Stanford. I mean, its STANFORD!
Not true... I graduated three times. And the other three (B.S. and Ph.D.) were far more dignified and memorable.
In my mind, the doctoral candidates and masters candidates should enter before the bachelors candidates and should graduate first as a show of honor and respect.
Furthermore, I want my friends and family to see the special ceremony and tradition associated with earning an advanced degree from such a noteworthy institution... not a free-for-all party that leaves parents asking "is this what I paid for?"
That's what the departmental ceremonies are for. Tons of pomp and circumstance and lots of ties and nice spring dresses. Plus, come on! The wacky walk part lasts for a half hour while everyone files in and then the whole crowd sits down to listen to speakers with only minor disturbances.
I would thank them too after they spend a good quarter of a million for the same education that you could have gotten at CAL BABY for half the price!!!
while people at stanford are learning to do something with their lives (i.e. doctor, lawyer, congressperson, president of the United States, founder of Yahoo), Cal students are learning to become the next party animals, druggies, and wastes of welfare money

We in the Busted My Ass For A Graduate Degree program do not have a sense of humor of which we are aware.

that's why I wore a cookie monster outfit. It's Stanford. You only get to graduate once.

Interesting spin on the traditional graduation. I was expecting someone to be wearing a star wars mask or something...

we at stanford know how to do math though and know it doesn't come out to a quarter million.
