How amazing for him to have been so privileged to get to be so close to one of God's magnificent creatures. Knut had a relationship he could NEVER have had in the wild and Thomas got to be friends with such a beautiful animal. Love is beautiful to watch and warms the heart immensely. Such a shame that they are both gone now, and so sad the way they died too. Although, to see the footage of Knut die was truly heartbreaking. At least they can rest peacefully now. x

I wonder what was going through Thomas mind at the time. I'm seeing a cub that could hurt him by accident. As Knut grows bigger it will be harder to play without the danger of getting killed by accident. They obviously loved each other. It must have hurt both of them when they had to stop being together like this.

Yes. The man is Thomas Dorflein, who hand-raised Knut after he was abandoned by his mother. He's popularly known as Knut's papi (daddy), since he was so involved in the care of the cub. He died in 2008 from a heart attack.

Fish have no facial expressions, little in the way of recognizable body language, and almost nothing in the way of personality, so they aren't so accessible. Does "cute" reign? Yeah. But only because they're easier to identify/interact with than non-emotive animals.

Right now they are together having such a good time in heaven. This is one man that has shown that animals great or small can habitat with humans. The love Mr Dörflein gave Knut is so humanly that could be seen. I wish whoever is looking after Knut now will try their best to do what Mr Dörflein did. Knut really misses his Papi and he needs a companion, time for someone to so something for Knut now. My deepest condolences to the family of Mr Dörflein and my greatest respect and gratitude goes out to you Mr Dörflein.
